Title: Weather Channel is live in North America
Post by: Strell on December 18, 2006, 09:21:06 PM
Note: If there's an official thread for this, someone bump it up. I am too lazy.
This thing is kinda cool. Spinning the globe around is like a really reduced version of playing with Mario's face.
Also, the music in all of this is unbelievably soothing. I could see myself loading this up just to listen to it in the background. It's even more so than the normal Wii menus.
For example, when you are checking extended forecasts and so on, if the graphic shows a thunderstorm, you get to hear rain. Which means it is essentially like one of those relaxing sounds things. And I can totally see myself doing that once in a great while (and would suggest it to others as well, I have no idea why they work, but they do).
Dunno how well this things updates in real time as you are using it - i.e., do I have to exit the channel to get updates, and even then are they instantaneous? But this is a fun little channel, I'm going to go play with it some more.
Edit: November 19 at about 4 AM Central time is when it went live. /will add to his FAQ
Edit 2: Yea. The more I think about the music, the more I think it would be perfectly suited for the Wii version of Animal Crossing. It has this nice "looking at stars" feel to it, at least with the globe music. Kinda like Katamari Damacy, actually. Very soothing.

I was wondering why the update service was acting all wonky, it took a while to set everything up. The interface is so very cool. :D

I just downloaded the update and it worked just fine. It's neat to play around with, but I honestly can't see myself using it too often. It would be more useful if they could figure out a way to show you the current temp, high/low, sunny/rainy/etc from the main menu.

I haven't tested it yet to see how accurate it is compared to other Weather Sites. But I really like this service. It is very simple to use, and rather ingenious. I think it will be different for different people for usefulness. But for me, I live right in the middle of Dallas and Fort Worth so it should give rather accurate Weather Reports for me...since I can check Dallas and Fort Worth's report.
What makes this so great is, you can literally turn your Wii on and select Weather Channel while you get dressed or eat breakfast in the morning and have the weather instantly. Quicker than turning on your computer, reliably there unlike the news or dedicated weather channel which might be featuring something else at the time.
It just simply works.

If nintendo would get opera up and running we could check the weather and news without using the dedicated channels. Plus we'd have an option of which source we get our news and weather from.

I figure the country bias would be because each country or region has a different primary provider for the weather so they'll only have limited out of country places. (Oh I'm updating my Wii as we speak with the Forecast center... Ah ha it came slightly early)
Little Sun progress meter is cool.
Boo... The future place I'm going to live isn't in there even though my current city of residence is...Go figure...
I sort of wish there was a way to put country borders up.
It's interesting how they are trying to make it look like a Weather News Forecast on all the parts.
All my Weather was from 12AM and what happened to the channel label itself showing the weather like the original demo did. Not as handy now...
(Posted here to get in the right version)
Oh to answer your question Strell if you read the update part of the Operation Guide it tells you you have to leave and come back for the weather to be updated. Though I don't know why they just didn't include a "force update" button.

Sort of like the Gamecube had Game Boy Player capability since day one?

No, because Strell wrote November instead of December
Damn winks

I thought my assumption was funnier. I just notice it. That is interesting.
But so far the Weather channel is made of PHAIL. It has yet to Update the actual Weather from 12 AM. Hopefully this will be remedied by tomorrow. Even though the UV index has updated.

I always check the news thread first so I posted that the wii weather channel was up without even thinking that someone had already mentioned it, oh well.

I was waiting for this crap to update, and it left me wondering.
What the hell happened to those "seamless updates" we were supposed to get through WiiConnect24?

I am currently at about the halfway point with the update needed to get the weather channel. Albeit it's downloading slowly, but I guess right now that's a give.

Well when i found out the news about the channel being live i went for an update. Turns out that today of all days my wii decides to be stubborn and stop connecting. I had to manually connect everything. Now, with over an hour of troubleshooting my router/wii. I got the connection test to work. The update started but is stuck right where the "off" is in the sentence "Updating...Do not turn the power off. Please wait a moment". It has not moved for about 10 minutes. Its very frusterating. Im half tempted to turn off my wii and restart the update but will this affect/corrept the system in anyway?

My Wii update stopped today and I quit it with no repercussions. I don't think any more udates will be anything important enough cause problems with the Wii if interrupted.

Just hold the power button down for a few seconds and it will turn off (The one on the actual console, not the one one the remote)

Hmmm....pretty channel....but about as useful as a toilet seat covered in crabs...

c'mon now it is called the "Forecast" channel. You get a nice 5-day forecast and if you click on the little weather icon, you'll get forecasts for the next few hours too.
If you want to know the current weather, stick your head outside. (I'm half-joking here. The updates really should come more than two or three times a day.)

Ok... So you have to click down to Today to get the current weather.... Because Current just gives you the weather at Midnight... Thats just Stupid.
Also some temperatures for the six hour forecast would be nice.
Also Dates on the 5 day would have been nice.

Today's penny-arcade strip just cracked me up. Coincidently, yesterday I posted (with a bit of sarcasm) on the VGM forums that there should be a game for the Wii titled as "Weather Wars", but now that I think about it I really want such a game.

Ok... I haven't ready anywhere else that anyone else is having a problem getting reasonably up-to-date weather except me... Is this true? All my weather is always from 12 am and 12 am only...

the weather channel has worked well for me. Some cities don't have 5 day forcasts but luckily my city does. At least I was able to check out the current weather for Cuba where I will be lying on the beach in T-minus 24 days. It would be cool if it would show the current temp on the main Wii menu...

Ceric, I'm only getting updates to current weather twice per day at this point. 4:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Oddly enough, some of the other forecasts do get updated more frequently.

Ha...it's pretty nifty/cool, but they need to add more cities. On the WiFi front, I had to disable WPA2 to get it to work
EDIT: It works now, but with WPA, not WPA2, and the Wii is DMZ'd.

It worked the second time. Was way too slow. Sucks though cuz my choices are Twin Falls or Las vegas NV as closest towns to me, and neither one accuratle reflects the weather here. We are always different from Twin cuz we are higher up, Las Vegas always has nice weather and we never do so thats not fair either.

Bump! Is the channel working for anyone else? I keep getting a error code:fore000006 when trying to update....

Earlier today it was not working for me either, and it had the same error code, but it seems to be working now. I am guessing it was a sever-side problem.

My Weather Channel no longer functions because I have WiiConnect turned off. How retarded is that?

That's a bug in my book... There's no reason that channel (or any other for that matter) should not work simply because you want to opt out of having your Wii connect to the Internet at its leisure.
