Title: Going from GC to main menu on Wii
Post by: MorningStar on December 02, 2006, 03:11:02 PM
How in the hell do I do this? I've been playing MP2: Echos along with Zelda (so I don't beat Zelda so quickly) and every time I want to switch from Gamecube to Wii, I have to turn the system off and then put the Zelda disc in. I tried reading the manual and it doesn't tell you any other way to do this.

Does anybody else know how?

The system literally turns into a Gamecube when you put in a Gamecube game, so turning the system off is the only way to return back to the Wii Menu...

That's also why you can't use the Classic Controller on GC games

I really hope Nintendo patches this one up. I guess it isn't a huge deal but it's still a little annoying, and seemingly unnecessary.

lol, when ejecting the disk, it tells you to put the disk cover back on if a gamecube game is running

I really don't think it's even remotely possible for Nintendo to change any of the Gamecube functionality. The Gamecube itself (without a modchip) was not able to update the system software.

So, my question now is, is there any way to go from Gamecube game to Gamecube game without turning the console off? If not, Ninty really screwed this one up.

"The system literally turns into a Gamecube when you put in a Gamecube game"

Can you switch games in your Gamecube without turning it off?

Yes.

I was trying to figure this out last night after a little Mario Party 7 with the wife.  I couldn't find anyway to get back to the menu without turning the system off and then back on. I'm pretty sure that when I hit the reset button, MP7 booted up again without going to the Wiimenu first.

if you eject the gamecube disk, then hit reset......it will reset back to the Wii menu and you don't have to turn the system off......this is the only way to get back to the Wii menu without turning the Wii off and play a different gamecube game without turning the Wii off........Lets face it, thats a very minor inconvenience

I don't think the inconvenience is really what bothers me in this situation. It is more the fact that the Wiimote should still be able to function and return to the menu similar to the Xbox 360 when playing Xbox. It makes the system feel more streamlined. I love being able to quit a Wii game and screw around in the Mii channel, and eventually, easily play a VC game. Quitting from a Gamecube game should work the same IMO and it simply feels odd not being able to do it.

This is the price to pay for real backwards compatibility.  The Wii can actually turn into a GameCube, but a GameCube cannot turn into a Wii.  Thus, a Wii cannot change back into a Wii after turning into a GameCube.

Nintendo probably would have liked it to work differently, but didn't want to face the Barbie Horse Adventures issue like Microsoft did.

PartyBear said it perfectly. The Xbox360 emulates the XBox, it doesn't have any Xbox hardware in it. It's just not possible to change this aspect of the system, as far as I can tell.

What was the Barbie Horse Adventure problem?

It is a GC with GC disks.  Despite the fact the hardware is faster, it still slows down on games that had slowdown on the GC.  It throttles down the processors.

Partybear is right this is the price you pay for having a truly 100% functional backwards compatibility. A small price to pay if all things are considered.

What happens when you press the "home" button on the wiimote while playing a cube game?  Anything at all?

Only certain Xbox games work on an Xbox 360.  Microsoft has to continuously tweak the emulation with game-specific code to get more games to work.  However, other games just work without all that hassle.  Barbie Horse Adventures was one such game, and so Microsoft put it on the list of games playable on Xbox 360.  This didn't look very good to Xbox 360 owners who were waiting for their favorite games to become playable.  To them it looked like Microsoft had wasted some amount of effort to get a silly Barbie game to work instead of something more popular.

That was the biggest example of the problem, largely thanks to Penny Arcade.  Microsoft's only partially successful emulation created an unwinnable situation.  It just wasn't possible to please everyone.  Somebody would always feel cheated with every new update.  That's not to mention the updates that didn't work or even made games stop working (if I remember right; most of what I know comes from Tycho's posts on PA).

Nintendo's solution inconveniences everyone equally, but at least all their games work.

Nothing at all. As a matter of fact, the controller shuts off and acts as if the system is not even on. I guess it just goes into "Gamecube Mode" and stops all the Wii functionality.

Perhaps I am wrong, but it seems like there is enough extra power in the Wii that a loose process for controller functionality could've been kept running in the background and allowed the user to get to the Wii menu that way. Like I said, I could be wrong but I don't see why it's not doable. I understand emulation isn't happening, but if they slightly modified the core competencies of the Gamecube launcher to include a Wii process (blue tooth and a small program listening for a Home button push), I don't think it leaves the realm of possibility and doesn't seem like it would impact Gamecube performance.

But I'm guessing the engineers at Nintendo know more than I do, so they didn't do it, or it was more work than it was worth. Either way I doubt we will ever see the functioanlity in place because it isn't going to earn them anymore money to do so.

Wow, that Barbie Adventure Horses thing is hilarious. Thanks for the information!

As far as turning off the Wii to leave "Gamecube Mode" goes, most of you are right- it is a minor inconvenience. But sometimes that inconvenience gets REALLY annoying, especially when you're comfortable on your bed/couch and just want to play a different game. But then again, you would have to get up to change the game anyways which is more of a hassle in itself. There should be an add-on disc-changer in the future.
