Title: Wii scratching disks?
Post by: D_MaN87 on November 21, 2006, 03:03:13 PM
Earlier today as I took out zelda to take a well needed break, I noticed a few small scratches on the disk.  I turned to wii sports, and noticed the same thing.  Is anyone else having this problem?  I have my wii vertical.  I think maybe this is the cause?  Id change it, but i really like it being vertical.  Maybe I was at fault?

Are the scratches circular around the perimeter of the disc, or do they go across the disc?

I've had problems before with CD-ROM drives where I tipped a computer on its side while a disc was spinning and the CD got really terrible circular scratches, this may be similiar to what you're experiencing.

I think lots of XBOX 360's had the same problem. The advice was to not move the console at all when a disc was spinning. The GC didnt have this problem coz the disc was locked into place.

I'm scared now! I doin't know if the scratch I see on my Wii Sports disc is real or my paranoia.

Why would anyone move it while a disc is spinning?

Every disc gets scratched some time or another. Its just takes a matter of time, also my gamecube,Wii,PS2,X360 gave the disc scratches and none of them causes the game to skip or any of that funky stuff.

I have the same issue with Zelda.  I noticed this concern Sunday in forums, so I checked all my discs and my copy of Zelda has two pretty severe scratches.  With that said, none of my other games were scratched (and we have played Wii Sports far more than any other).  Knowing that I can't return the game to WalMart (policy to not accept returns for opened games), I wrote a letter to Nintendo yesterday and have not received a reply.  I truly believe that this was a problem with the disc itself and that it was not caused by the Wii system.  As noted above, the scratches were not circular (caused while the disc is spinning) and not straight across the disc (as I would expect on inserting or removing the disc).  One goes at an angle, and the other is almost a square spot where it looks like it has been gouged.

As it is, Zelda may be the first game that I will actually end up paying over $100 to play, as I fully expect to have to buy another copy.

You can exchange it at a Wal*Mart for a copy of the same game.

Yeah that's the kind of thing I was thinking of, accidents. Also some people may change the orientation of their console from vertical to horizontal and on 360's even if the disc isn't spinning it can get scratched apparently.

I accidently moved it while the disk was spinning before.  That was my stupid mistake I suppose lol.
