Title: The Wiimote Speaker, and Twilight Princess
Post by: Madcat221 on November 19, 2006, 05:17:13 PM
I am in agreement with whichever PGC staffer said that the Wiimote speaker is ill-suited for the things they make it do. The little thing is overdriven and has crackled on me many times already.
HOWEVER..... There is a way to turn it off, and not only that, but make the sounds it otherwise plays go through the standard sound system! Click on the little "Home" button on the Wiimote, and you get an in-game system menu. Near the bottom are readouts for the four Wiimotes, which contain battery charge levels at the top. Put the cursor over it (enjoying the gyrosensor's ability to cause the cursor to rotate ) and click it. Amongst the new settings you see here is a volume control for the Wiimote speaker. Turn it all the way down... and all the sound is played through the standard speakers.

I tried this earlier, but if I remember correctly the sword swinging sounds that normally play from the remote do not play from the speakers. I think most sounds play in both normal and remote speakers, but some are only for the remote. Those ones will be lost if muted.

You know, I can get into it after a while, but I think I will turn the volume down a bit. I think it's a neat feature but the Wiimote "ugly" sound outweighs the good sound from my TV, which I'm not crazy about.
Wii Sports made better use of it by just sticking to very simple sound effects...no musical effects or anything. I wish Nintendo had put a little extra $$$ into the speaker though..it could have been an amazing feature instead it's a neat but disappointing one.
