Title: NOW I get it - Yamauchi
Post by: z64dan on November 17, 2006, 05:42:52 PM
Do you guys remember this:
Quote

"The DS represents a critical moment for Nintendo's success over the next two years", Yamauchi said -- "if it succeeds, we rise to the heavens, if it fails, we sink into hell."

Ah, good old Yamauchi. How right he was. He was talking about Nintendo's plan to break into the casual handheld gamer market as a precursor to releasing the wii as a casual gamer's gaming console. Hopefully the master plan will work.

Well, yea, Nintendo made a bet that what "gamers" really want is fun. By not letting the 'hardcore' fan interests dominate they could make a system that allows games to be just that, fun to play. Not that ever increasing graphics arn't appealing, but focusing exclusivly on them muddies the rest of the game. It would really be sad overall if in the end, betting on "fun", was a loosing bet to techogadgetry.

So if you have to be all emo and have temper tantrums that Nintendo isn't doing high-def, HDD, 5.1, DVD/Blu-ray/HD-DVD, built in routers, etc... , well, you're just going to have to pick up one (or more) of the competing systems in addition (or exclusion) to Nintendo's system.

(Nintendo making you to just have fun regardless of graphics and sound, what a horrible notion...)

Iwata isn't doing a good enough job? I don't think Yamauchi would ultimately leave Nintendo 'out to dry' or in incapable hands.

Not to diss Yamauchi, but Iwata has simply EXCELLED AT HIS JOB.

...Yamauchi is a good guy, especially since he led Nintendo to the saving of videogames back in '84. He has many faults, that's undeniable, but he has never been halfway, just not as flexible as the 21st century would like. The very fact that he gave Miyamoto his shot at videogames should make Yamauchi forever enshrined in a videogame hall of fame somewhere.
