Burchfield and I have been swapping hosting duties lately, and while it's been a lot of fun, this week heralded the return of the true heir to the RFN Throne. Mike Sklens came back in a bright explosion of glory. This was a bit too much for Evan who, after residing in the dank, dark, underworld of Oregon, could not comprehend such things. As such, he sat this one out.
Episode 23: Game Marketing 101
You can also listen to the podcast on Odeo.
Tonight the three of us go to town on the state of advertising, public awareness, viral tactics, and the whole shebang as far as Nintendo (and the game industry as a whole) is concerned. Stan and Mike both sing the Big N's praises, but I've got more than a few issues with their current performance.
This podcast also marks the first time Radio Free Nintendo has had a special industry guest star. Ken Chan, Brand Consultant for Acclaim (the new one), was kind enough to stop by and talk shop for the final segment. Oddly enough, he gives Nintendo an "A" in the marketing arena, as well, which throws me into a fit. I look forward to your hate mail! Direct it to the following, please.
Oh, and one more thing. Remember that wacky Naruto contest? We've got the winners picked, and they'll be played... TONIGHT! Also, a big thanks goes out to everyone who entered. Keep those creative juices flowing because our next big winner just might be you!

Hello, my name is John Senobi, and I am a fellow Nintendo fan, and a follower of the path of Shinobi - that's right, I am a Ninja. I'd just like to let you guys know how much I enjoy the show you put on. Every episode...apart from the pirate ones. Not a big fan of pirates. Anyway, I put it on my ipod, and listen to it as I'm leaping from rooftop to rooftop, chopping off people's heads, and all good Ninja stuff. It's great. That's my advertisement. I'm giving it to you because I'm on a mission. A mission to aquire every Naruto episode, video game, and piece of merchandise....and then destroy them. Naruto spreads a lot of misconceptions about the noble art of the ninjitsu, and so I will aquire the items in your possession. I'd prefer to do it the easy way, that's why I'm entering this contest.

Mike: So, anyway...
*phone rings*
Karl: Hang on, that's my phone. (Puts caller on speakerphone.) Hello?
Evan (sounding like he's on a cell phone): Karl Kastunyeddaleragata? Thank god. This is Evan.
Karl (annoyed that Evan is interrupting the recording of the podcast): Hey, we're kind of in the middle....
Evan's vocal impersonator: Who's calling now?
Karl: You.
Evan's vocal impersonator: Oh.
Evan: Listen - I'm standing on the street outside my house. Seaman is out of control. Him and his minions - they lust after human flesh. I fed them Mrs. Rumbottom, but they still aren't satisfied. I tried showing them a movie to calm them down, but they said my taste in movies sucked. Then kicked me out of my house! (Getting emotional) Listen, I-I don't know what to....
Stan: Calm down, Evan. Are they still in your house?
Evan: I'm sorry?
Karl: Where are the evil videogames now?
Evan: In the hou....oh, no, wait, they're coming out. Oh god, they found my chainsaw collection.
Mike: You have a chainsaw collection?
*The game boxes march towards Evan, revving-up their chainsaws*
Woman in background: AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHH
Man in background: It's the end of the worl- (then, as the chainsaws rip into his flesh) Arrgh.... *gurgle*
Games (as they chow down on the man's innards): *snarl*, *growl*
Evan: It's pandemonium over here. Thank god I have this shotgun.
*shotgun blast*
Karl: Just try and wrangle them up and we'll send them out to the winner of the contest.
Evan: The contest, right. Look, I really don't think we're promoting that thing enough. Can you, like, write up something for the main page on how awesome Naruto is? You can talk about...um...how cool that guy with the bushy eyebrows is, and stuff.
Karl: Rock Lee?
Evan: Yeah.
Mike: The contest is already over. We've picked the winners.
Evan: Did you say the contest is over? I guess - excuse me
*shotgun blast*
Evan: I guess my vocal impersonator helped with the judging.
Evan's vocal impersonator: I do what I can.
Evan: Right, okay, well, I'll try to take care of things here.
Seaman (as he tries to leap onto Evan's face): *Rawr*!
Evan: Aaaah!
*two shotgun blasts*
Evan: That was close. Bye, guys.
*Evan hangs up*
Stan (who had given some of Evan's games a special potion to turn them into evil killing machines - a potion he had spent a year scouring the seven seas for - in hopes of the games killing Evan so that Radio Free Nintendo could permanently become Nintendo Pirate Radio): Well. It sounds like everything is going to plan. *Evil laugh*
Everyone else (joining in): *Evil laugh*

Thank you for listening to my pleas of longer RFNs. Screw those "short and sweet" people! Anywho, this was one of your stronger efforts. I really liked how you got an industry guy to talk about his practice without peddling a product (for the most part anyways). I also enjoyed how Karl was seemingly pissed the entire time. AngryKarl should be a regular character.
And man, the day I first saw that Super Mario Sunshine ad will go down as my saddest day as a Nintendo fan. I mean, the game is still great, but that commercial raped all my wonderful childhood memories with the mustachioed plumber.

Yeah, I received the t-shirt and the Naruto stuff at the family home, but I'm at my apartment and too ill with the mother of all sinus infections to even drive over there to check them out.
I'm surprised I won, though. While I don't regret the decision (especially since I have a friend who loves quirky games like Seaman), I have to admit, I thought the others were better than mine.
