Title: Pre-Order Lines...
Post by: TerribleOne on October 13, 2006, 05:12:47 AM
Awww man. I just spoke to my friend and he tells me the pre-order line is crazy long in a Gamestop in Brooklyn, NY. I'm stuck at work so i wont be able to go anytime soon. (>_< How many allocations do you guys predict Gamestop might receive compared to other retailers like Best Buy and FYE(who got weeks takin pre-orders now)?
I suggest for you guys awake lookin to pre-order to leave... NOW.

Interesting! I continue to have no fears about finding a Wii here, but perhaps Brooklyn is a different story! I believe it will be easy to find at ordinary retailers.
But in any case, I'd rather line up for the real thing on a weekend than for a pre-order of the real thing on a Friday.

The GameStop at the mall had a line of 20 at opening (for 9 systems). The GameStop across the street had a line of 24 (for 6 systems).
The lines didn't form too early. The guy who was first in line got to the mall at 7:30, the person in second got there at 8:15, and I was third (arriving with fourth and fifth) at 9:15. The line got long quickly around 9:30.

I was 2nd in line at 7:30.
11 people got preorders, 20 or so were turned away.
This is at a little podunk Gamestop in NH with 2 other GSs in driving distance.

I think I'm gonna just go tot he virgin megastore for this...at DS Lite launch, they had ample amts of systems and games while everyone else (EB, gamestop, circuit city, best buy) were all sold out. I'm assuming this is because ppl don't go to Virgin to buy games ;]

The GS I went to had 14 available, about 27 lined up. The first person had arrived around 4am, I ended up 4th in line.

My GameStop had about 35 people in line. The first person showed up at 5:00 AM, the last people showed up not long before 10:00 AM (store opening). I was in line at 7:30 and was 15th in line. From what I heard, most people showed up from 6:00 to 7:20. The store accepted 29 pre-orders.
Summary: I have secured a pre-order! (System, Remote, Nunchaku, Retro, Red Steel, Zelda)

This is my story:
Just because I think I wrote this amusingly, I'll post it here (it's over at CAG):
Before this morning, my answer would have been emphatically "yes," solid and unshaken.
But after the surreality I just experienced, I'm going on the fence, if not completely upon the other side.
As I rounded the corner to the Gamestop in the mall amongst roving bands of old people walking laps, there stood before me no less than 15 college age men, running the gamut from supreme game and anime nerd to casual Apple demographic metrosexual to, oddly enough, one guy sitting down holding a PSP of all things.
Instantly they all - pack-like - rose their eyes and pinpointed me, with ancestral, instinctual bloodlust. For I was the new prey.
Loudly, and without hesitation, one of their kind asked in a tongue known to only Nintendo fans - Eeii glok ku ler Wii? - which, if you are a Nintendo fan, translates in our broken English to roughly "Wii get?"
Knowing the history of the clans and their ancient ways, I replied with Aont me laa Wii, which our pathetic language can only directly transcribe as "Indeed, Wii get."
Their faces took a strange turn at this point, showing a common and shared motive. For they knew, based upon my mastery of the Nintendish, that my efforts would be in vain.
Ok ku laa Gamestoppu fren ti laa lu.
Immortal words resonating still, "13 Wiis get, now captured."
I was informed further, with the aid of blood rituals, that my arrival was nary a few hours late, and that several of the hunters had been in place since "chosh modash," meaning "big dark," a phrase we Englishians commonly call "10 PM."
We passed around a ceremonial feast of our enemies - melted PSP units and old XBL head sets - in commiseration with the help of a small fire, and compelted the great Iwataton in reverence to the great Reg A'Ih.
One of them noticed I had carried in a Chuck Klosterman book, provided to props give (Gungstamosh), and informed me that Sex, Lies, and Cocoa Puffs was a personal recommendation.
I remarked that "I expected this out of the PS3, but not for this." This incited much hearty laughter and speak of "tanking" and "Sony" and "bad."
I warded around with my brethren for a few more minutes, accepted my defeat, and left upon the back of a great wildebeast, which I had spotted in its natural habitat of Victoria's Secret. Her name was Cheryl, and as a beast of burden, she was no disappointment.
In short, after this morning, and learning that 16 people were at GS where only 13 units were available, that those people had been turning down newcomers since 4 AM, that another 5-6 people came and left dejected while I stood around, I have strong reason to believe that this is a little larger than I've given it credit for.
I have already informed my girlfriend that I will now, officially, be indisposed of the higest order come November 19, and have built a rather elaborate buffer of the 17-20, such that come that eventful night, my actions have been spoken for and will not be questioned or challenged.
This is due in no small part to the fact that I feel the anticipation for the Wii - which I had already seen appealing to several young men, none of whom were afraid to announce the name across a mall's interior - is greater than I originally perceived.

That's what I'm feeling for this as well.
There were two older women in our line who made the cut, and while I'm willing to believe that they were likely there on behalf of a child's christmas (no doubt knowing from past experience that only the smart mothers get the goods and a thus a satisfied child come christmas), it still surprised me a little to see them as standing in line at GS at 8 in the morning reeks of something only a hardcore gamer would likely do.

The woman ahead of me was a mother who was buying the system for her children. She told me that she had waited in line (either for a pre-order or at launch) for the GameCube, Xbox, Xbox 360, and DS Lite. Even though she was buying for her kids, she was pretty knowledgeable about the different game systems.

I showed up 15 minutes before the store opened and I was number 12 in line. A few minutes later an employee came out and announced that they had 12 systems to preorder. I was happy. I felt bad for the guy who showed up two minutes after me.

I called my local GameStop and was told that the pre-orders have sold out. I guess I'll be taking my chances on 11-19-06.
Anybody know if Circuit City is taking pre-orders?
Title: RE: Pre-Order Lines...
Post by: Zach on October 13, 2006, 10:06:19 AM
I got there at about 8:15 and was second in line. The only reason being is because our mall has a GS and an EB, where the EB is closer to the main entrance. People went to the EB line and didnt bother to check GS. Anyway, the EB gave out all of their pre-orders, while The GS I went to still had some after I left.
(For some reason, The manager of the GB told the employees that they weren't allowed to tell people how many preorders were left, probably a dirty trick so that people wouldnt leave, and the GS could try to hook them on something else)

You know what? It turns out that I don't have to preorder until Monday since I'm Canadian, eh? So you guys are like my guinea pigs.
I plan to at least stop by an EBGames on my way to work on Monday to survey the situation, and I might consider taking a super-early lunch hour to see if I can get a reservation, but I'm not going to line up at 7:00 am just to get one.

I'd recommend it JUST to be safe.
They don't force you to buy bundles so it's not like you lose anything by preordering. Worst case scenario, you get your Wiis at the same midnight launch as everywhere else, it's just that you have to go to a specific store to do it.

There's no such thing as midnight launches here, we go to bed at 9 so we can get up early to shoot Moose and eat bacon in Canada.

In my case, my safest bet would be Walmart.
I've had EXTREME luck getting a Gamecube and a DS at Walmart during the Black Friday Holiday shopping rush.
The thing is that pre-hype for the GC and the DS was small. The hype the Wii has is even bigger, so I would be pushing my luck if I tried to get a Wii during Black Friday.

Yeah I'm trying to get someone I know to set one aside for me. I went to gamestop today to get a reserve. And they were out of their "allotment" and it seems that all Gamestop/EB stores were sold out with in 30 mintues in my area.

Yeah Black Friday be a no no. I personally pre-ordered at the first place that offered as soon as it was offered. Which was Sam Goodies back on September the 23rd. I knew it be popular.
I just called Sam Goody because I'm paranoid about it to make sure I still had it and that they had the right phone number. Also any pics?

I hope that's only true for your side of Canada, because on this side I really want to get it before anyone else, if I could get it on the 18th that would be unquestionably pwnacious.

Don't time zones mean that the people in the east (Maritime provinces for those of us in Canada) will definitely win such a contest, since they'll be in Nov. 19 before the west? That's not a fair contest.

Defeated? Oh wait there's that kid that got a Wii from "Ellen", NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Then I will be the first to get it the proper way, by paying it and not as a gift. heck I even I want to get it frst than anyone that will get it from the midnight launch at the Nintendo World Store in NYC.

If you must know, its The Valley Mall. (good nondescript name that doesnt give away its location). It wasnt that big of a difference, but I would have probably been 5 or 6 in the EB line, when I was 2 in the GS line. Also, I left as soon as I got my preorder, so Im sure they probably ran out shortly after that.

Oh, well in that case, just to show what I am talking about, I found the mall directory.
The Main entrance is the one towards the bottom center of the map. The EB is right near that entrance, but the GS is around the corner (The GS is not labelled for some reason, but it is in between Pacific sunwear and Trade secret, and is labelled as "leasing opportunity")
Edit: fixed the link

Ok, I drove to the Mall and got there at 8:50 AM EST, they open the mall door's at 8:55 AM and I walk in. I was extremely confident that I was gonna get a pre-order because I live in Miami, FL and there are like 25-30 Gamestop/EB's just within like 10 Mile's of my house, plus the mall I went too has a both a Gamestop and a EB in it. I also knew how many consoles both stores were getting, 14 for the Gamestop and an amazing 33 for the EB. I like the gamestop better though so I went there when the door's opened there was another guy waiting by the door I was trying to get a Wii Pre-Order, but he went to the EB. I was first in like at the Gamestop there and waited till 10 AM and got the first pre-order out of the 14. I called both the Gamestop and EB later at like 11 AM and they were both sold out BTW, pretty amazing, I'm happy I got mine anyway.

I usualy shop at the EB games on City Walk at Universal Studios. I know this EB doesn't open up until 11 AM, and that was right when my first break started today, so there was no big rush. I mosey on over there about 11:15, I was sure there would be no more than 5 people asking about the Wii.
I see about 10 people waiting outside of the store while its open and instantly I think "shoot they told wii guys to wait outside in a line." I walk in and ask whats going on and if I would be able to pre-order a Wii. I was told they were "out" infront of a customer but come back during my next break.
I return and there are 2 left(one was saved just for me cause I am friends with these EB folks) and they tell me that the people were lining up as early as 1 AM, and they would have 30 Wii's available for launch.
I was amazed, couldn't believe it, true story.

It's crazy how that woman said she was buying the Wii for the graphics.... She was probably getting it for her kids and just said that lol.
Anyway, I'm a bit worried now. I was able to get my GCN from my local wal-mart at about 6:30-7am, but I'm not so sure I'll be able to do that now ; ; I'll try though.

Post by: BlkPaladin on October 14, 2006, 02:54:23 AM
Yeah it a little worrisome. I figured that each Gamestop/EB had an avg of 25 SKUs. No I took a microcasm, the stores in my area, they sold out in 30 minutes and one sold more than they were suppose to because the manager at the Gamestop I work at works as a sort of "patch" manager were he gets information and he spreads it to them to the others he wasn't very happy about what happened but back on topic. I proposed a hypothesis that there are around 1000 stores in the US.
That would make it 25,000 units and they sold out in 30 minutes that works out to be about 833 units sold a minute. Since ther was press release that stated that Nintendo intended 1million units to go to North America, spilt between the US and Canada that would be about 600,000 units for the US. At the rate they were going it would only take 721 mintues to sell out or 12.01 hours
There is no real reason for this I just need to do some semi-normal math, Distcreate Mathematics messes with your head. (Its a specialized math dealing with sets and is related to Calculus.)

It might as well be: they've written GC reviews in which they complained about things being absent from the game which were ACTUALLY in the game if you play it for a few hours.
