Post by: WindyMan on September 26, 2006, 12:02:09 PM
Here's the best part: It's free to download from launch until the end of next June!

Opera releases details on its browser for Nintendo’s Wii console

Oslo, Norway - September 26, 2006 - Opera Software today announced details on its browser for Nintendo’s soon-to-be released game console, Wii. Opera’s full Web browser is available for download from the "Wii Shop Channel". Nintendo has stated that they will offer Opera free of charge as a temporary promotion for all Wii users until June 2007.  Wii

From July 2007, users can purchase the Opera browser using Wii points. Wii points are credits users can buy that allow them to add new games or the Opera browser to their Wii consoles. The number of Wii points required to purchase Opera has not yet been announced.

With support for Flash and AJAX-based content such as Google maps, Wii users will benefit from a feature-rich Internet experience that is uniquely customized for the Wii. Opera for Wii boasts the same complete standards support as the Opera 9 Desktop browser, and includes the added functionality of "Zoom" and "Bookmarks". The Wii remote control will also be an integral part of browsing, allowing users to intuitively control the Web with their Wii remotes.

Nintendo has previously announced that Wii will be available in the U.S. on November 19, 2006, Japan on December 2, 2006, and in Europe on December 8, 2006. The cost for the console is $249.99 or 25,000 Yen.

So does this mean that once July 2007 hits, your downloaded copy of Opera will no longer work until you purchase it? Or does it mean that if you download it before July 2007 you have it free forever?

Well, it says "Free to download." I think the fee part comes in the "downloading" process. So, if you download it while it's free, you're golden, and can use it forever. If you download it after that, though, there'd be a fee.

I guess we'll have to wait to know for sure.

Of course it would be free forever once you get it.  Microsoft had a similar deal with Texas Hold 'Em on Live Arcade, wherein the first three days you could get the full version of the game for free.

I expect a price drop by then (or at the very least, $199 without a bundled game)

I expect that on July 1st, 2007, they release the much coveted Black Wii.

I think it will be earlier. I think we'll see at least one new color and a price drop in April/May when a second set of big games are released.
There's no reason the Wii shouldn't be 200 IMO. I think it's 250 just because Nintendo relealized the first few shipments would be bought exclusively by hardcore Nintendo fans who'd buy it for ANY price. It will need to be 200 soon to capture the casuals and non-gamers next year.
As for the new color, Black is obvious. But I wouldn't be surprised to see a Silver released too.

I think we all know when the price drops to $200 they will also stop including Wii Sports(since that is the reason the system will cost $249.99 to begin with). I didn't plan on browsing online with the Wii(that is what my computer is for), but I will download it while it's free.

What would be completely amusing is if Nintendo ended up inadvertently capturing the fabled "home convergence" market somehow with the wii -- microsoft and sony have been frothing at the mouth in that direction for ages, but never seem to make any actual progress towards their goal, despite vast sums of money spent...

As long as Microsoft keeps the status quo in regard to their Core console, I see it like this..

Mario Galaxy and Black Wii ---> Late April 2007
Price drop and Smash Bros Brawl---> Holiday 2007

Although, thinking about it, they will probably have a price drop before the holidays. Maybe in July or so. If they want, they can release Mario then as well.. Also, I'm still not sure where Super Paper Mario fits into all of this.

FYI, this was on NCL's site during Wii Preview, but thanks to the magic of Internet translations I totally misread it as being free AFTER the end of June, so I apologize for the mistake.
