Title: wish me luck please!
Post by: EasyCure on September 19, 2006, 05:17:30 AM
ok so....
i currently HATE my job with a passion and i feel its slowly ruining my life. It is partly responsible for the potential break up with my girlfriend of 2 years (we're taking a little "time apart" but that never works out well for me in the end if prior experiences have anything to say about it...) but i'll just leave it at that so i dont go into a long emo rant. In short, i hope that leaving my current job might make things better between my girlfriend and i as well as make me happy because i won't have to put up with real emo kids that hang out at a Hot Topic all day. soo..
i've been filling out applications left and right, one of them being at the Nintendo World Store in manhattan. Obviously this would be like a dream job. Yesterday while i was at work someone from their Human Resources dept called and i missed it!!! oh no! BUT... they left a voice mail with a number to reach them if i was still interested in the job. By the time i got off work however, i was simply transfered by someone to the HR voicemail. I left a message saying i'd be very interested in the job and left a call back number.
This was all yesterday. In a few minutes i'll be a little more awake and call the number back to speak to someone about the position. this job would really help me out. i have no idea if they'll be able to match my current pay, and i definately wont be getting as many hours, but the chance to work for any facet of nintendo would make me very very happy. The position itself is basically everything i do now at Hot Topic; customer service stuff and folding tees, cept i get to be around video games all day. Not just any games either, the best damned games ever. If theres an event i could be the guy asking trivia questions to all you rabid fans looking to get a free shirt, or the person walking around with a dsl and a new game not even released yet to show off to people like you, people like me; the fans.
the other big plus is that i'll be working in the city and theres always so much to do. the store closes at either 7 or 8pm so i wont have to worry about going in to work one day from 1-10pm and be expected to be there the next morning at 9am-5. Like i stated before, with my current relationship situation... if it at all helps me out there, i'd be even happier because she means alot to me and i'd hate to see the relationship end. Thats enough being emo though...
so yeah, wish me luck guys and girls; whether its on the job or on the relationship. i'd appreciate any support you guys could give me because this job would mean a whole lot to me.
thanks!

update:
this is the second time i've called back, and the second time i've been transfered to someones voicemail. i hope they didnt fill the position or anything
i really could use this job, even if they dont match the payrate i'm earning now. i really need to get out of the job i'm in. I hate it with a passion now. i hate the company, i hate what it stands for, i hate what they do, and i hate my boss becuase he's a jerk that talks crap bout me behind my back but is all buddy-buddy with me to my face.
according to the contract/application the job opening is part time (25hours) from oct-january. even if i have get a second job to make up the extra 15hrs a week, i'll do it. i know that atleast i'll be happy in one of the jobs, the hours are better, and again.. might help me out with my current relationship situation. even if it doesnt, i'll have a job in the city, it'll be like a whole new start. one that i could use if things go sour in my personal life. it'll be fun to just be able to go out after work (from the nintendo store) and see all the things the city has to offer. its something i cant do either in my hometown or the town i work at.
:end rant:

EasyCure, get your butt up and go to that Nintendo store now! It's about 12:08 where I live so it should be about 3:08 in New York! Still plenty of time. Show them you mean business, and you are serious about that job! Let them see an articulate, well mannered, likable Nintendo fan who can get the job done and its yours! Remember, plenty of smiles!
Good luck man!

actually caterkiller no one in the store itself handles hiring issues, its all done by the Nintendo Human Resources Dept. Actually, i was going to go down there anyway just to check out the store (havent been there since E3) but the president and all the other world leaders were at the UN today that i didn't wanna bother with all the EXTRA pedestrian traffic.
update though: the person that originally contacted me responded to my voicemail(s) and called me back yesterday to schedule a phone interview for this friday @ 1:30. WHOO! i'm not gonna get my hopes up yet but i am feeling somewhat optimistic.
the only downside to getting this job would be having to work on Nov19th

upside is you get a system on day one without waiting for it (and maybe cheaper or even free!)

They already had it a few days ago and sold out their 200~ unit shipment on 1st day!

very good advice for, and not just for me. i used to haaate talking to anyone on the phone but its something i had to learn to deal with in my current job. now i don't really mind having to talk to strangers over the phone and im good at making conversation, so i know how to make a smile come across over the phone. i was very excited to hear back from them and i think it showed in their attitude towards me for the phone call.
lets just hope the person giving the interview on friday is cool and in a smilin' mood!
and stevey, if what you're saying is true then maan i better start preordering else where. oh and i dont think i'd be able to get a discount on the system itself. from what friends of mine tell me, who work at places like gamestop and bestbuy, they usually only get discounts on the software, not the hardware. its all good though, i already have $300+ saved up in my Wii fund and if i do get discounts on games, that just means more games to buy at launch. though i'll probably just pick up the extra controllers instead.
all the good comments so far are really making me feel better about this whole thing. thanks alot!

Good luck on that interview and with life in general. It'd be awesome if you could land a job there!
It's one of my dreams too, to work for Nintendo someday. I don't know if I want to live in Washington (my family is all in Nebraska), but if I did, you can bet I'd be knocking on old Reggie's door, asking if there's anything an ad guy who happens to be a huge Nintendo fan could do there
Title: RE:wish me luck please!

he would look at you with a puzzled look on his face and think "ads? what are ads?" then turn green with anger and hit you back to Nebraska. we all know their marketing sucks

Nooo. Reggie must have some grand master plan for repairifying their marketing.

As others said sound happy on the phone and if you get that interview be PASSIONATE about wanting the job, that is key. Explain why you love Nintendo so much, and if you are truly passionate you will have a great chance of getting the job. Passion can be more important than your qualifications, especially when you have a gleam in your eye. A good example of this is from my mentor, he had a woman who was very much into Viva Pinata, and he interviewed her for the heck of it after she pressed it (they had no job openings), she was so passionate and so knowledgable about it that he said he would have given her a job right on the spot without knowing her qualifications. On the flip side he has had people come from Harvard applying for a job who say they would be fit for the job because of their education, and guess what? They were in for a rude awakening when their egos were deflated after learning they did not get the job (He said some were astonished since they thought they were so smart). SO anyway after all that rambling be PASSIONATE, explain to them why this is your dream job and do not be afraid to ramble about your passion.

i dont have to worry about being passionate about this job. my face lit up when i originally got the voicemail they left me asking if i was still interested in the job. i've been to the nintendo world store only a handful of times but i feel like a kid everytime i go. theres no doubt that my passion for the job and all things nintendo will show when and if it comes up in the interview.
around this time tomorrow i'll be on the phone, im still somewhat nervous but im sure that once im on the phone, the person on the other end will be someone just as passionate about nintendo. it seems like the only hire passionate people. thats what i like about the company. to think, i could be part of the nintendo family, even if only in the smallest area. thats so friggin cool!

first time i ever went was around xmas of '05 because my (then)girlfriend(?) was in love with my DS and i figured the NWS was the only place that would have the Pink DS phat. by the time i get there they were almost closing up and everyone seemed like they just wanted to get outa there.
the few times i've gone back since then, the people there seemed pretty "into" the nintendo products, but then again they had to since it was usually during some special event they had going. i hope my enthusiasm shows when im interiewed later today, cuz it really does make a difference when a customer walks in and you can actually relate to their excitement about a new game or a franchise or something.
again guys, thanks for all the good comments. i appreciate it.
only a few hours to go until my interview, WOO!

W00t!
i just finished my interview and i think i aced it. again, it was a phone inerview but i think i portrayed my excitement about the job. Ceric, im sure they knew i was smiling over the phone.
i was a little nervous at first because i layed around the house all day wiating for the call, but oce we got to talking, i relaxed a bit. at one point they asked me to list a few games i've played to completion and i went on and on and on. i actually stopped myself for a second and asked if i was babbling and apologized for running my mouth, but she laughed and said "no thats fine, i could actually use a few more games so go ahead and list em!" and that was cool cuz she must of known how much of a gamer i am, especially since all but maybe 3 games i listed were all nintendo exclusives.
another question came up that i wasnt happy about. "would you consider yourself a hardcore gamer?" LoL. i actually did laugh a bit and explained why i found it amusig, i told her how there are so many different views of what a hardcore gamer is and i gave my opinion about what being hardcore is and my answer to her question. she seemed kinda floored by my geekiness, im still not sure if thats a good thing :-/
all and all, i think the interview went great. she said she had fun talking to me, which she most likely says to everyone, but i still think i did good. theres still one more step before actually getting the job and im sure i can ace that too.
the next step is going down to the store on a shceduled day and showing them what im made of. she explained that, thankfully, its not about selling them a game, but selling them the experience. her example was if a mom walks in with her son and she's just standing there while he's playing a game, they would want me to walk up to her and take my dsl out and say "hey have you checked out our touch generation games."
the cool thing about that example was when she said "you'll take your ds lite off of your belt".... now im wondering, do i have to supply my own dsl or will they let me trade it my ds phat for a dsl of my own to keep and that i'll be responsible for; ie bringing it to work, keeping it recharged and scuff free. my optimistic side tells me they'll give me a dsl to keep up with nintendo's newer product, since they want the dsl to be the established model and wont be making any more ds phats. though, my down to earth side says i'll walk into work, pick one up, clip it to my belt, and leave it before i go home oh well.
i have such a good feeling about this job that i cant help but feel like im not gonna get it! ;-)

*pats back* Good job.
Yeah. You'll have one of those belts like the models right? A micro, A DSL, your personal Wiimote, Accessorries, and the guest Wiimote. In fact the GBMicro, DSLite, and Two Wiimotes should be on your belt and then you should have shoulder belt like Rambo that holds all the accessories.
I would love to see that. Never been to the Nintendo Store. I've never been to New York either...

Wow, very cool. I think you'll probably get the job.

I would've failed at this. I don't finish many games. I'm still stuck at the darn phazon mines in prime.

thanks for the support Ceric (and everyone else actually), if you're ever in NY you should stop by. its an awesome place to be, especially when theres an event going on, and if i do get the job you can ask for "that other guy" and you'll have a friend waiting to take you on in any game ;-)
i'll be sure to let you guys know if i join the nintendo family or not. i'll take pictures of me with my rambo-esqu accesory belts and straps and what not too

thanks guys. im not over it, but i am coping. i dont wanna brag but i have a "booty call" next weekend so that might help a lil
i havent updated the situation in a while, nothing new really. my audition at the NWS is on wed, which is my sisters birthday (in case that mattered) and im going to buy some new shoes and pants to dress to impress.
my question to you guys is: is it tacky to wear a nintendo tshirt?? i have so many. i have three different Zeldo hoodies too, the newest one is probably the coolest thing ever.
if i go in there with a pair of clacks on and a collard shirt, should i be wearing the zelda hoodie? it is cold out, so its not like im blatantly showing it off. if that isnt too much, would the NES controller belt buckle be too over the top? lol i dont wanna look like an idiot, but i want to show im enthused about the job ;-)

I agree with Evan, keep it professional. Through conversation I'm sure they will understand just how much you love Nintendo.
Title: RE: wish me luck please!
Post by: vudu on October 01, 2006, 06:55:16 AM
I also agree with Evan. However, if you own a pair of Nintendo-themed underwear, you might want to wear them and then arrange for your pants to "accidentally" fall down sometime when you're there.
Title: RE: wish me luck please!
Post by: Ceric on October 01, 2006, 11:07:07 AM
lol. Ignore Vudu second sentence. Congrats. I go with the professional look. Actually I try to dress close to what they where at the Nintendo Store, I don't know what they wear. If they wear t-Shirts then I change that to a polo at the very least. Though I assume they wear nice shoes and pants.

If your thatworried about how your dressed just walk in the store butt nakedj/k. try to look professional and atleast wear a nintendo hat. and also your in luck if you hadn't preordered yet
Quote A few weeks back we reported that the Nintendo World Store had stopped taking Wii reserves. They didn’t stop because of running out of units, they just wanted to hold off on taking more reserves until they had a better idea of how many they would receive. I found out that these reserves will start up again on Tuesday, October 3rd, and that the number of reservable units this time is “far above” what they took last time.

actually i already planned on doing exactly what Vudu's second sentence was about, before i even read it. okay, not really. in fact the whole question about wearing a video game tshirt was a ruse. i didnt want this thread to get boring with nothing but "yeah yeah, good luck" comments.
in fact, i usually dress up in slacks and a collard shirt and a fashionable blazer. its just my style. the only times i do wear jeans in a tshirt is at my current job becuase i'd rather dress comfortably. sounds backwards huh? but thats how it is, i like to present myself. i started going to work well dressed but it gets so hot in that store to wear a tshirt and a long sleeved collard shirt over that while running around doing a million things for so many people. its just more comfortable to wear jeans/slacks and a tshirt at work now, but when i go out its back to what i like ; blazers and collard shirts.
they already explained the dress code to me during the first interview. same as most places; no visible tattoos, one peircing per ear (no facial pericings), no jeans. they wear black pants and blue polo shirts that say 'nintendo' on the.
i just bought a pair of new shoes yesterday for when i go on in wednesday and i will be wearing a nintendo tshirt (for good luck), they just wont see it because it'll be an under shirt.
and to stevey; its too cold to go in naked, it would be unflattering. the news about preorders is great too, because i havent preordered and i might as well put one down while im there. even if i have to work on launch day (assuming i get the job there) i know i have one reserved to pick up before i go home. sweeet

in case any of you are curious about what the nintendo world store is like and think you wont be able to pay it a visit, theres a feature on it on IGN Weekly.
its episode 27 if you check it out. The first 12 minutes are all about Wii/nintendo, then the last segment is about some Squeenix game i dont care about. hope you enjoy it

New update:
just got back from the second interview, it went well. i was feeling a little nervous as i was walking up to the store but it all went away once i was inside.
the interview was a lot like my phone interview minus the questions about how many games i've beat to completion. i know i answered everything the way they wanted to hear; there were no pauses between my answers and the next question. thats a good sign, so any one of the younger PGCers out there - keep that in mind. you dont want to be asked a question and then have the interviewer look at you without saying anything expecting more of an answer.
i go back on monday for a third (!) interview, this time with the store manager. after that i finally get to know if im hired or not (after background screening and drug tests). the manager is actually the guy in the IGN weekly video Matt was talking to, in case anyone saw it. i met him today but only for a second.
oh and before i left i bought a kirby plush as a gift for someone, the women behind me on the line was buying a copy of brain age. she looked middle aged and didnt walk into the store with a kid. i'll probably post that in the "nintendo virus" thread too.

its actually a long story, she's been trying to use me ever since we met about a year ago and i've always jokingly told her that if my girlfriend and i break up, she'd be the first to know. well as it turns out, she heard about it thru the grapevine and the time has come.

thanks for the cool comments Caterkiller (and everyone else really).
i actually didnt expect this thread to be big or anything, like why would anyone else on here from all over the country as well as other countries care if i get this job or not? its good to know you guys are rooting for me though. it all goes back to pgc being such a good community and im glad to be a part of it.
i'll definately keep updating and let everyone know if i was hired or not. my only regret if i get the job is that i never bought a pgc shirt....
it would be cool if there was another shiggy/reggie event while im employed and flash the pgc shirt in a pic i take with them.

Now we have a moral Dilemma. Keep your dignity or keep you pride. Also don't worry about the t-Shirt *this is where Svevan pops in about the Naruto contest* I'm sure the new site... Which Name Will Be Revealed Soon *hint hint* will have a shirt to flash.

moral dilemmas suck. luckily i havent talked to this girl in a few days, and the weekend is fast approaching. i doubt its gonna happen now.

There is more to a girl than her looks, her personality is much more important .
Title: RE:wish me luck please!

only when looking for a relationship, which is something i would never even think about with this girl
this girl has wanted nothing more then a fling, even when we were both invoved. im newly single, she recently broke up with her long term boyfriend (and is seeing someone new actually) and she still wants that fling. not exactly someone i'd want to date...
i dont like her personality to tell you the truth. she talks too much about everything, especially some things you shouldnt tell someone the first day you meet them. she drinks/smokes (which is a turn off for me) and she curses much worse then any guy i know.

im so close to getting this job, i can feel it!
so today was my third interview, this time with the store manager at NWS. i had some errands to run before i went down into the city and i was held up and thought i was going to be late...
i made it to the doors at 1:59 on the dot and walked in tucking my shirt in....
it was suprisingly hot today and i took off my shirt and jacket on the subway and put them back on as i neared the store.
anyway the place was packed, most likely to do the colombus day parade, and i had to wait five minutes for the manager. the interview was a lot like the last two, except there were a few more questions to judge my personality i guess. i think it went even better then last time becuase i was less nervous and in a much better mood.
the manager told me they would decide on who to hire by the end of the week, and let the people know so that the following week the people who do get hired can come in to fill out paperwork. if i get the job i'll start either the few days before haloween, or definately on nov1. i cant wait...
i'll keep you guys posted

I don't know being tired doesn't sound fun to me and when I say tired I mean in the since of stoning with wheels, I'm like Wandering :P .
I was thinking about that before the Mii thread came up. Would I just walk in and ask if EasyCure was working? Now I have a rudimentary idea of what you look like.

Good luck man, and remember the hiring process is usually a long one nowadays. A lot of employers are doing extensive checks on ppl before hiring. Nobody wants to let a petiphile slip thru the cracks......I'm looking at u Republicans!
After my store closed down (company bankruptcy, then bought out by FYE) I initially looked for a job at Bank of America before settling down with the idea of finishing off school with 100% effort insead of a 50-50 split with a job. The Bank of America had me come in twice for a one on one interview that lasted about 30min each over a week, then a week later a 15 person group interview.
Personally I think i nailed every question in the interview but one, the question was why do u want to work here and everyone besides me was able to say "I have a business degree or I'm currently in school for a business degree and look to use it here" The group interview wasted like 4-5 hours of my day.......agh! I could've been playing Pikmin.
Hmm that was all negative.....well here is a more uplifting story:
My Career Development class required us to have a Mock Interview with someone in our Industry to pass the class. I was really nervous about it because im one of those ppl that gets butterflies, loss of breath, voice changin, trembling, akward fidgyness, and whatever else you can think of i've experienced probably.
Anyways in the interview i was actually interviewed by three guys "more like interegated" but in the end they told me that i was by far one of their best at answering questions, asking questions, and overall best interviewee.
Some of the questions were pretty tough, they asked me "what would u do if u were working hard developing on the game project and u noticed someone has been slacking off surfing the net?" They apparently really liked my answer, "I would ask him to pack up and prepare what he would have to expalin to his family".................kidding, lol. I said "I'd go and ask him for help on a problem whether there really was one and then tell him that he just saved me a big headache and if he needed help I'd be more than willing (This way it would get his head jogging without yelling at him and making him feel bad).
Hope me luck somewhere down the line when i do get a real interview i don't land on my face.

i got an email back from the NWS manager, very promptly i might add.
maybe it he was being nice in responding to it right away, but maybe it was a sign.. that there is still hope.
all it basically said was that they were conducting a few more interviews and that human resources would get back to me soon and apologized for the wait (since i was originally told they would have a decision by the weekend)

i think i agree with you Mr. Jack. at first i woul of said otherwise becuase i got a call from their human resources about a day or two after i sent in my application. its the reason why i was feeling so hopeful since i got such a quick response.
three interviews later and a week or two after i was told i would be informed whether or not i got the job and i havent recieved a phone call or email from anyone at the store or their human resources dept. if they really wanted the new hires to start by nov 1 then its just too late for me to have gotten the job so i'm going to give up the hope. the manager himself told me i would know the week before so they could send in all paperwork and pass drug and background tests. nov 1 is 6 days away; i didnt get the job.
i had put in my two weeks at my current job last week but...
i kind of got the store manager fired and the district manager asked if i would stay on. i agreed to because i owe it to the rest of my staff. if i didnt get the store manager fired i would of left, even without getting the job at nintendo (a friends boyfriend can garantee a job at a GameStop but...eh.. its gamestop. i know a manager at a Target too...) but now that he's gone, i wouldnt want to leave the rest of the staff with the holiday rush just around the corner. they would of been fine without me but with two managers gone... ouch.
im stuck there until after new years, when business gets slow and i now that leaving wont affect the store and they could have people lined up to replace me. the staff that works under me is happy im staying, so it makes me feel better about the whole situation, but i've made it very clear that i wont be there in 2007.
if nintendo does give me a last minute call for the job, i'll take it and i'll work both jobs if i have to. dont ask how i'll manage, but i'll do it. i cant miss a chance to work for nintendo... but i doubt thats going to happen now. if not i'll apply the next time there is an opening and try even harder.

One of my main sources of income is a theme park attraction, and it gets shut down Nov 4th. And we were only given the word Oct 1st. I still have spidey and my wu shu school though, its just I can't get 5 days of spidey, and my wu shu school pays me alot less than my other theme park job.

im not sure if anyone will even read th is but guess who now works for nintendo...
thats right, i got the job after all.
turns out that this past sat. when they unveiled the wii demos they had a bigger crowd then expected and are desperate for people. they called me up because i was a top contender for the job in the first place, but was told they decided on going with people who had an easier commute into the city (although my commute there is a breeze, they just werent familiar with my town i guess).
yesterday i went in to fill out paper work and do a drug test. i even had to sign some sort of NDA (i skimmed thru it but i did see alot of "confidentials" in there). in fact, according to that paper im NOT working for nintendo. since im there as a seasonal, im technically working for something called Kelly Services (temp agency) in which nintendo is a customer of. so when i start work i have to clock in online thru a kelly services site, adn if im going to be late or cant make a shift, i have to contect them and not nintendo. weird. if i stay on past the season (which i hope i do) i will then be an official nintendo employee (i'll tattoo the nintendo official seal of quality on my body if i stay, i swear i'll do it).
i still have my other job at hot topic because of some craziness thats going on there... so i'll be working both jobs. my first day will either be the 17th or the 19th. the manager told me she wants EVERYONE working launch day because its going to be crazy. so much for staying home and playing wii all day

Rock on, dude, congrats! Do you get a discount on Nintendo stuff now? I would MOST DEFINITELY make use of that. As you implied, Who needs sleep??
I'm in kind of a similar situation to you now, though it's different in that I don't know if I've got even a chance at landing the job. I'd been kind of bummed out at work (I'm a designer at an ad agency), since I'd gotten almost solely crap jobs for the past few months. Nothing fun. So I was surfing over lunch, and I hopped onto Apple's web site, and a little link at the bottom caught my eye: "Job Opportunities." I clicked on it, and found a job that matched me amazingly well, so I've spent the past week and a half preparing for it. I actually applied a week ago, but haven't heard anything. I'm going to follow-up on Monday, but I'm not too hopeful – I'm sure tons of people applied for it.
But maybe, if I'm really lucky, I'll have as happy an ending as you're having
Title: RE:wish me luck please!
Post by: EasyCure on November 13, 2006, 05:51:11 AM
my life would just be better if i got a "happy ending" anytime soon... but thats beside the point.
my first day is tomorrow (tues14th) and i'll be working 12-9. im so excited! im not sure about the discount on nintendo stuff. all my friends with retail jobs that sell video games (like gamestop, target or TRU) say they dont get discounts on hardware, but they do on software. i wouldnt expect to get a discount on a system anyway and whatever money i can save on games, i'll take it. plus if its a good discount i'll be suckered into buying all the wii accesories like the controller "gloves" and what not. in fact i did a layaway at my other job last night... $50 in nintendo stuff... not even big stuff either; a nintendo messanger bag, these AMAZING Zelda lapels(6), Nes controller lapel(3), a Zelda button set of four buttons(1).
so thats $50 in nintendo stuff AFTER my 40% discount (and the bag was an additional 50% off because it was on sale..). stuff i dont even need. i already have a messanger bag and a spare backback (the latter being a nintendo bag as well) and i dont really put much in the bag anyway. all i usually carry is my DS, my mp3 player (only half the time, probably more now for the commute into the city), and a bottle of water. man im a nintendo whore... oh i also bought a LOZ baseball cap... lol. i should just start a new thread of nintendo merch i buy. its not even cool collector stuff like unclebob either, just random "crap"

thats at my other job (hot topic). i found out there are two different discounts i can get at NWS: one is a walk in discount. basically if i buy something on my day off or before i leave work while im there i get 10% off (excluding hardware). they do have a special holiday discount where they order stuff for you thru nintendo and its a much bigger discount (not sure exactly how much though) but i need a credit card for that. it ships to the store in 1-2 business days. sounds like a much better deal to me
anyway my first day was amazingly fun. i showed up early and wandered around the city cuz i didnt want to hang out IN the store. it would look unprofessional (atleast i thought so). five minutes before im scheduled to clock in i ask one of the guys for the manager and he gives him a ring. while we're waiting he asks if i played Wii yet. I hadnt and he said "well come here and lets get you ready to play, you're gonna have to show everyone else how to play so you gotta learn too!" i started a game of wii tennis and didnt bother having him explain the controls. it felt great. i was actually a little upset when the manager came and dragged me away from it . my first impression of the controller in my hand was that it was soo light. i couldnt believe that..
we walk downstairs, he sits me in the staff room and asks t hat i read over a few things and to write down any questoins i have. it was a packet that is basically everything you'll find on the wii site, really basic info about it and its major launch titles, as well as a list of games in the launch window. i skimmed thru it just in case and met a few more members of the team while they were on break, two of them which played a game of smash bros. melee (i was too shy to join, i had new kid syndrome). they actually have three tvs in the breakroom; one hooked up to a dvd player, and two hooked up to various consoles (i saw two GC, a Snes, Nes, Dreamcast and Genesis) and a small shelf with a few games (im suprised there werent more). the manager came back and got my shirt size, came back later and had one but it was too big. came back later after that with one that fit better but i had to use a steamer to get the wrinkles out. when im done he was on the phone so i waited in the staff room and talked to a very nice girl that worked there. manager finally came back, gave me a name tag and gave me a brief meeting about their policies. he sent me upstairs with another manager and gave me a quick tour.
during this tour i was taken upstairs and got to play excite truck for a quick round. Sleeper Hit of the season. thats all i can say. its one of those games where you see it and its like "oh thats cool, i should give it a shot" but you never have enough incentive to do so. you really should though, it was crazy fun. again, he started explaining the controls to me but i already knew them, so we're coming off the starting line and i boost accidentaly..i hit the dpad to steer. i felt like an idiot because i went straight into a river or something because i forgot i had to steer. it really is a hard habbit to break, but in no time i got the hang of it, i got the feel for how sensetive the wiimote was while steering and i was landing some awesome air, and gettign some pretty cool crashes as well.
after that i was taken backdown stairs, actually back to where i spoke to the guy that introduced me to wiisports. i was stationed with him and simply had to help show people how to play and answer any questions they might have. there were a few things i learned from him actually. like in wiibaseball there are different picthes you can execute by holding down certain buttons. i was just telling people to throw lol.
i had people trying the wii out from litereally age 5 to atleast 50. also five or six people from europe (tourists) absolutely loved it and kept asking when it would be released. their follow up question was always the same as well, is it region encoded. also there were many girls and older women playing as well. one mom i actually saw playing Boxing! she loved it.
i cant begin to explain how much fun that was. i was just standing there either playing or showing people how to play for five hours before i took a break. i didntw ant to leave... when i wasnt playing i was wishing i was playing. i just wanted to snatch the remote out of peoples hands and hog it too myself.
on a lil sidenote about wiisports, the boxing is so far my personal favorite game on the disc. the movements are so intuitive and its made so that if you just try to rapid fire punch and flail your arms around like an idiot to "cheat" you're not going to land any hits. i saw many of the younger kids doing this and getting knocked out, y et the older guys who know a thing or two about boxing and take their time properley blocking and ducking side to side always landed a hit. the other great thing about it is how amusing it can be for even on lookers. this one kid knocked the cpu down for the count. as its counting the kid is taunting him, shaking his fist or gesturing for the downed man to get up. when the count got to around 8 or 9 the kid started pumping his fist in the air and so did the Mii on screen. all the onlookers were VERY impressed. in fact everyone was very impressed. i heard nothing but good things about it all day, and some of these people were people off the street that were drawn in by the crowds.
wii is going to be a hit, and if it isnt t hen there ju st arent enough outlets for people to get out there and try the thing! i remember when i first held the wiimote in my hadn and started playing tennis, then the rest of the games...all i could think of was "playing really is believing". even after work, when i had gotten home and told my mom all about work and she saw how much fun i had (smiled aaaaalll day) she kept saying she wanted to give it a try because it sounds fun.

To whom ever still cares to read my bragging about how happy this new job makes me, i'd like you all to know that..
I met Reggie yesterday, and I lived to talk about it.
i know i know it might seem untrue because any normal person would have disintegrated in his presence, but i believe that working for the company he spared my life. I'll detail the encounter below:
its around 10am friday morning and a coworker and i are manning the Wii Sports stations, three in all. Because it was early there wasnt too much traffic so we both talked to customers, as well as eachother, and played a few games of wiisports when there was no one else to try. This one customer was asking me a few questions as i was showing him how to play and made small talk and kept me distracted. From the corner of my eye i saw someone step behind me and in front of the first Demo station. I finish what i had to say to the customer and turn around ready to greet an eager customer who wants to play a game. I turn around and I see a shoulder... i look up slowly only to see Reggie smiling down upon me. i wanted to say "hello welcome to nintendo world" but instead it came out "oh wow.... you're reggie."
I had no idea the man was so tall, in fact he was almost statuesque. I'll go even further to say he is the "cadillac of men" as Bender would put it. He responded with "yep" and put his hand out to take the wiimote from me. I gave it to him without hesitation. I didnt want to act nervous or be more stupid after that shocked "oh wow you're reggie" moment so i calmed myself down and made small talk with him. As i handed him the controller he began to navigate the wiisorts menus and i merely said "im sure i dont have to explain how to play to you! have fun" and impressed him with my customer service skills as i answered more of customers questions partaining to wii. he then said "i dont think we've met before, are you just starting out here." i told him it was only my second day but that i loved it there, t hen he gave me a proper introduction and shook my hand saying "welcome aboard" he then asked what i thought of the wii and if i'd be getting one, i answered him honestly. then he started his game.
Reggie likes baseball. it was the only one he played, and the man is such a wreckless beast that he not only didnt wear the wrist strap which we require everyone to put on before letting them hold the remote, but he batted one handed! i watched in awe as he hit every ball thrown at him and got the bases loaded. I cheered him on for a grandslam so i would have something to tell my friends and he laughed. He proceeded to hit a grand slam. Reggie is a busy man, i must note, because he didnt have time for full motion swings so all he used was quick flicks of the wrists. He did so for pitching as well and bragged about how fast he can pitch. By then one of the managers came by and stood between me and Reggie. I guess he wanted to make sure the new kid didnt say anything stupid, i dont blame him cuz i wouldnt want someone angering Reggie either. The manager told Reggie the fastest pitch we'd seen so far was 94mph. Reggie gave him a look of death and destruction, then smiled and siad "94? lets see if we cant beat that record today." and took his pitch; 96mph. He said he's gone as high as 98.
the game ended when the cpu enforced the Mercry rule and basically gave up because he was just too good. Thats when Reggie had to leave. He said it was nice to meet me and shook my hand a second time, then patted me on the shoulder and said welcome to the team. then just like that, he was gone. i think he might of flown off riding on a dragon in which he tamed, but that might of been my imagination. im sure he left in some other equally awesome badass manner. we all know reggie doesnt use front doors, he breaks walls down that are in his way.
with all that said, i'll tell you right here that no i didnt get to take a picture with him i know i know, boo. i was on the clock and i didnt know he'd be in the building. what was i supposed to do, abandom my station and find a camera? besides, you know how some people think cameras steal your soul when you're photographed? with reggie it works the other way. whoever is taking the photo will be obliterated along with their camera.

no it wouldnt, he'd destroy half of nyc in his rage (nintendo store included) and i'd be out of a (second) job! i can picture him picking up pedestrians off the street at rockafeller plaza, putting them on top of the giant tree and slingshotting them off to the moon....

Pssh, I can take Reggie.. 100 mph pitch, here I come!
That's so awesome though. If I came face to face with him I would probably turn into stone. All he needs are snakes as his hair now..

I was flicking 84mph pitches on my first few trys (I don't have the Wii, it was at a public event), knowing that Reggie is that good is making me want to break his record.
