Title: I have the money for the Wii...but...
Post by: Smash_Brother on September 18, 2006, 06:50:52 PM
I did it: sold back all of the GC games I don't play anymore (which is just about all of them) to Gamestop. They have a special going on right now where you can bring in 3 games and get an extra $10 in store credit. I HIGHLY recommend this if you have a big ol' pile of games you never play like I did.

So I have $272 is store credit now. Good stuff. Problem is, will I even be able to GET a Wii from Gamestop?

They're still not taking preorders, and it occurred to me that 4,000,000 worldwide isn't as much as I had first imagined it to be. With Amazon Wii preorders selling out in under a day, frankly, I'm concerned about my chances of getting one, even if I do have some connections to the folks at Gamestop.

I've heard rumors that Gamestop might not even be doing preorders at ALL and that we'll be looking at a "line up at midnight" scenario. Being the type who prefers to not be dragging ass at work the next day, I'd prefer to preorder.

Anyone else sharing similar concerns?

I'm starting to worry myself too. Dear god, PLZ let me pre-order1 I can't miss class/work/stuff/life just to line-up!

... I'll already be missing all that once I get it! I can't pull double shifts!

Hopefully my Superstore over here will have them on launch day - it shouldn't be too much of a problem, but in light of recent news, I am getting a bit worried.. Toys R Us in Calgary had a preorder thing, but this was before the pricing was revealed. I could check that out too..

That's my concern.

I work in my family business, but I don't think it'll be easy convincing my father that being up all night for the Wii was worth being useless at work.

Though, I did stay up all night for the GC...

Oh well. Worse case scenario is you have to wait a bit for them to get more in, yeah?

Don't worry too much about Amazon.com's selling out their pre-orders.  The same exact thing happened with GCN and Amazon.com when it was offering pre-orders.  I think Amazon.com is just testing to see how many people will try and pre-order so they can get an idea

Exactly. In fact, it's possible Amazon might even cancel current pending orders and claim it was a mistake since they seem intent on doing bundles, according to their Wii page. (just my speculation, though)

I had lunch with some video game store managers at the mall (our mall has 4 video game stores for some reason 2 of which are gamestop affiliates) yesterday they all seemed to think their respective stores wouldn't be taking pre-orders for either the Wii or the PS3 fearing the backlash of the 360 launch where they couldn't satisfy all the pre-orders. they also said 3 months for the announcement of the Wii and its actual launch wasn't really much time to set up bundles and prepare for such a heavy undertaking.

maybe they're
wrong, but that's all they talked about for an hour.

i think im in the same boat as you Smash_Brother. i went to talk to the guys at the gamestop in my mall and they siad even though they know the price they're still waiting for a few more details before taking preorder, but he said they are taking preorders for the games. Thats when the second guy chimed in...

Ever hate someone just because of the way they look? well thats how it is with the second guy. He always has this smug look on his face that i cant stand.... He hears me asking about the preorders and he interupts his own manager when telling me about the game-preorders to say "it wont sell out..." and whipes off his psp (which made it even more insulting). the manager simply said, "we should have enough systems that it wont be hard to find, but the games might sell out alot faster since they have a really good lineup. so if you're planning on buying one of the bigger titles, i do suggest a preorder."

i wasn't sure how to take that. i too was wondering if they would merely sell systems on a first come-first serve basis in order to avoid the mishap with the 360. i've been thinking that, just in case, i'll preorder at other places as a backup plan. i prefer gamestop though only because i work in the mall there and can get in before the general public, so i'll be first one outside of the store on launch day ;-).

I suppose the only good thing about the overprice here is that the few units Nintendo sends never get grabbed in madness, maybe a couple of rich kids will pick it because most of them will pick the ps3 and Ill be one of the very few people who are fanboy enough to had saved all year to get the console and just one game T_T.

In a bit of good news, a friend reminded me that the Wii launches on a Sunday, making the work issue a bit easier.

Still, I'm not a fan of sitting against a cement wall at 9 AM on a frigid November morning, acknowledging that my nether organs are freezing into snowballs while I wait for the clerks inside, warm and toasty, to open the goddamn door.

Iwata should turn that mirror back on himself. I'm a non-liner-upper. I'm his target audience.

Iwata:  But Kairon I see that you are a local on a game forum.  You are not part of my Brave New Audience.  You are in fact a gamer.  You might like and play non-traditional games but you are on PGC.  Lines... I don't need no stinking lines.  I could pave my driveway with Wiis if it is such my will.  Though not you.  I need you to be one of my disciples.  To spread the Word of the Wii.  With an introductory price of just $310 you should go and make believers.  Convert the lowly masses onto the vision.  For united are the Wii in the fight of conversion.

Kairon has money and wants to give it to Nintendo in exchange for their products.

That's all that matters.

Iwata-sama! I repent! Please forgive me my truculence! I didn't mean what I said, I was weak! Please don't leave MIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!

*sob* I'm sorry. I'll buy a Wii even if I have to line-up for it and throw a launch party at my dorm. I'd even light incense in your honor if only it wasn't against dorm rules.

I'll be doing everything I can to get one come launch, I'd just prefer to not make a race out of it and start camping out in front of Gamestop in order to be assured that I get one.

Wow, I don't know what it's going to be like here, but it sounds like lineups are serious business in other places.  GameCube...there was a lineup for it, but it wasn't that big of a deal.  I got to the Wal-Mart store maybe 15 minutes early, and I heard when we were there that it took until 4 PM for them to sell all the Xbox's a few days earlier, so it sounds like I could have come in any time during the day.
