Title: How to show Wii to Nintendo-haters on Day One?
Post by: JonLeung on September 17, 2006, 10:06:59 AM
On Day One, I'll need:
-component output cable (so the games don't look less vivid or less sharp than my GameCube's)
-multiple controllers
-good multiplayer games

Now, what I want to know is, when will the component output cable be available, and what multiplayer games sound good?  (I don't like sports games so Madden isn't even a choice on my radar.)  With WarioWare: Smooth moves not coming out for launch, what am I supposed to do, other than have people watch me play Zelda or make Miis out of them?  >_<

I know there's Wii Sports, but the Nintendo-haters may want something with nicer graphics too.  Then again WarioWare doesn't need ubergraphics and is tons of fun, so maybe Wii Sports will be enjoyable enough for them.  As I said, I usually don't like sports, so it'd still be nice if there was something else anyway for multiplayer action on the first day.

I think I am going to set up ExciteTruck on the huge tv in our school's student center.  There will definately be some people curious enough to play with me.  Also, ExciteTruck is a pretty good multiplayer game to show that the Wii has decent graphics.

Edit: a couple other good games off the top of my head would be RedSteel (c'mon, thats gotta have some kind of multiplayer mode, ala goldeneye), and Rayman.

Yeah, Red Steel does have split screen multiplayer.. That would be a good choice to show them - it has great graphics, and if the controls are ironed out, it would be really fun.

Simply boot up a copy of Excite Truck. You don't even need fancy cables. If they still hate it after that then it confirms they don't care about games in general.

How to shoot Wii to Nintendo-haters on Day One?

I thought that was the topic when I first read it.  I need sleep.

Potato gun with a modified nozzle to accept the Wii for shooting

I'll have to look at the pictures of the back of the Wii again, but do you suppose the GameCube's component output cables will work with the Wii as well?  They should have the same way of outputting video, I would think the only real obstacle is whether or not it'll physically fit, if the GameCube's component output cables were specially designed and they didn't consider that when designing the Wii.

Or maybe they did consider that...Nintendo would probably make more money selling another cable.  >_<

Jon that's a question I also have. I just picked up an HDTV recently and I am looking for component cables for my Cube. They are probably going to run me up a bill of about 50 bucks, so I don't want to buy them if they won't also work on the Wii. If they do it's time to buy, if not i pretty much have to wait until the Wii comes out to play Cube in 480p. Damn Nintendo and their backwards ass HD policies.

It doesn't appear that the GCN's component cable will work with Wii.

Since there is only one A/V output on Wii, it needs a cable that outputs both audio and video, and the GCN cable only outputs the video.

Which sorta sucks. Will have to pick up another cable asap.

Don't show it to them, who cares? For average joe though, I have a feeling Excite Truck just may be the killer app to make people say WOW.

I think Excite Truck or Red Steel, as others have said.  For the sake of multiplayer argument, Super Monkey Ball should be pretty fun too, but it's probably not a game that's going to impress Nintendo haters, it's just fun.

Excitetruck, definitely.  Red Steel will, too, but I don't really plan on getting it.  I know I'm going to show my family with WiiSports.  They don't hate Nintendo, of coures, it's just the game I think they'll enjoy most.

I think others have already pointed out the best multiplayer options. If you're looking for something, else, though, I think Trauma Center will be a sexellent demonstration game.

Wow, I've seen more recommendations in this topic for Excite Truck than anywhere else, ever.  Perhaps I should give it another look.  I typically don't like racing games, but hey...I guess I liked Excitebike way back when.  Then again, this is pretty different from Excitebike, isn't it?

Hmmm... I'm a little more pessimistic.

If you show them Red Steel or Call of Duty 3, sure they'll see the new way to control games, but will they complain about not having bleeding edge graphics or not having online play, or b!tch about split screen?

If you show them Excite Truck, sure that's neat and all, but will its simple concept be enough to convince a hostile audience?

If you show them Rayman, they may forgo the rumor to b!tch about how it's all simple humor-based minigames, not a hardcore platformer.

I'm personally leaning towards Wii Sports because it's no nonsense. It's meant to be simple and pure concept. Then when they complain about its graphics or wanting more levels of Boxing, you can say that some company will probably just take Wii Sports and make it look like Final Night once they have more time, but for a free game that came with the system at launch it would be reasonable to expect simpler style. This way, you'd have insinuated that the gameplay will be more traditional hardcore graphics-loving later on, but by that you imply that they're already hooked by the gameplay even without all that shimmering glaze.

Haters? Who's going to have time for haters on such a sacred day? I'm barricading myself and Zelda in the living room. And I'm not Aussie but Excite Truck is definitely close behind. The huge jumps look like pure fun unlike like those no-hoppers, F-Zero and Mario Kart.

I'd say the hardest thing to do regarding getting people to try the Wii will be getting them to pay attention to it at all.  I've tried to get my parents to try games that I consider accessible (like Pac-Man for example) and they don't try it because they don't even LOOK at the screen.  It's just utter stubborn refusal to try something for even one second.  In an example like this I figure the best bet would be to play the Wii where they can't avoid it.  They'll see the TV screen and you playing the game just by doing their regular routine.

I don't mean "non-gamers", Ian, I'm thinking more my friends who have, for the last generation or two, given up on Nintendo.  Technically they probably don't "hate" Nintendo, they just didn't find much appealing on the N64 and GameCube.  I'd like to show them some Wii games but whether or not they're truly graphic whores or not, I'm wondering what games will truly wow them.  And I would prefer multiplayer games (even if controllers are pricey) rather than taking turns on a one-player game like Zelda.

"How to show Wii to Nintendo-haters on Day One?"

Shove a Wii-mote up their ass and say, "Dance, b!tch."

Seriously, though ... I think Wii Sports is all it'll take, and perhaps Madden.

Yeah seriously.  All you have to do is invite them to play.  Even the most die hard Nintendo hater will be interesting in trying the new system out.  Then it is a matter if they enjoy the system or not.  Make sure when you try to convert them to rent games they enjoy.  Madden, Red Steel, Wii Sports for a party game.  And make sure you have 2 or 3 controllers so you can play multiplayer.  Everything looks better when you play with a friend...even horrible First Person Shooters that should have never been released.  (Yes I am talking to you EA Bond games.)

If only Mario Strikers Charged was launch game.  I'll choose ExciteTruck too, the game just looks fun, big jumps, cool locations, Turbo speed, etc.  The more i think about the whole concept of Wii as "we" strategy i think Nintendo is gonna really live up to it.

Just look at all the multiplayer driven games that are in the pipeline.  BWii, Mario Strikers, potential Mario Kart, Smash Bros Brawl, etc.  I think the Wii Generation will be the Multiplayer generation, i know i won't be spending so much time playing single player.

u know if anyone used that as an arguement against you all you would have to say is Wii+Controllers=$430>PS3+Controllers=$750.  However i too wish the Wii controllers were cheaper......

Wii +  Four Fully Operating Controllers (Including Classic Controller)
$510.00  Estimated.

Xbox 360 + Four Wireless Controllers (Premium Package)
$550.00 Estimated

Playstation 3 + Four Controllers
$650.00 or $750.00

I think the Wii has a much better price point for multiplayer gaming.  And you can even drop the price by $80.00 by not getting the classic Controllers.

Now that I'm actually considering a Wii quasi-launch party, someone remind me when WarioWare: Smooth Moves is coming out?  Maybe I'll wait for that if it's not much later.

I'm still worried about Red Steel, there hasn't been anything solid that makes me think they got the controls, grahpics, or gameplay down.

I'm not saying graphics are bad but some of the character models make the game look like one of those arcade shooters (Area 51).  Granted I haven't played the game myself, there still hasn't been a hands on preview that has not said "controls need a little work".  The gameplay, whether swordplay or multiplay hasn't been talked about much.  Multiplay was announced recently which makes me assume it is tacked on, which would be sad...

I have high hopes though, which probably will doom this game.

The latest word on the street is that Red Steel's been vastly improved since the last time anybody's seen it.  Graphics, controls, etc.  At least NintendoWiiFanboy.com, GoNintendo.com, and other places are saying so.  Is it more than wishful thinking?  I would think that if it is improved, we should see something of it soon - no point not showing off how good it really is, if it is better now.

I just had to BUMP this up...

Response to a possible Wii launch party at my place is abysmal, and the answers that I did receive were not very enthusiastic.  (And this is even after showing people the first Wii Experience video with the hot girl!)

There are still doubters.  There are still people who don't get it.  And apparently they don't even want to make time to give it a try.

What is wrong with them?  What should wow the PlayStation fanboys?

Maybe the issue is focusing on Wii too much?  I mean, I'm planning to try and have a party but it's not going to be "EVERYONE MUST CONVERT TO WII AT MY PARTY." (little exagerration there )  I find just getting people together is a huge chore nowdays, my friends are all getting married and becoming domesticated.  Blah.

Edit: but my point was, getting people together should be first priority, with Wii as the centrepiece for the get-together?  Maybe?

Without really thinking about it I had slipped something similar in the email I sent out...something like "you really have to play it to believe it".  Apparently that's not enticing enough, nor is the prospect of a free opportunity to play a Wii with other people for as long as they want.  You'd think a Wii party would be good for the fence-sitters.  >_<

I mean, geez, I'd go to a PS3 party to try it out 'cause I sure don't think I want to buy my own one anytime soon.  That doesn't mean I wouldn't want to play games on someone else's PS3 if they offered an opportunity to do so.  I'm not a snob...like they seem to be.  >_<
