Title: Official Endless Ocean (Forever Blue) thread
Post by: GoldenPhoenix on September 14, 2006, 11:45:37 PM
Might as well create a new thread for the new Nintendo IP, Project Blue. Personally I can't wait to get my hands on the game after seeing the teaser video, it looks gorgeous and could be tons of fun too. Any other thoughts?

I can't wait to get lost in blue. ...no, wait, that's another game.

Yeah, looks awesome. Definetly looking forward to this.

Looks relaxing and/or boring. The online element could be really neat.

is that the game that is basically scuba diving or something?

If so, I wonder if it is 100% non game, or is it more like a exploring game where you try to find things to complete a objective or something.

I'm not sure what it will have, but it does look like it has a slick presentation and the multiplayer should make for an interesting experience (Hey it is Nintendo so it can't be THAT bad!). I hope it is one of those online enabled games.

Why hasn't anyone photoshopped a picture of Steve Irwin in this screen shot yet?

"If so, I wonder if it is 100% non game, or is it more like a exploring game where you try to find things to complete a objective or something."

I would like it if they made it both where there were clear objectives and goals but if you want you play in free mode where you just swim and explore the same areas without anything specific to do.  It's like how in Wave Race you have the races but if you just want to goof around in one of the areas you can (or Tony Hawk for another example).  That way non-gamers can enjoy this game but there's stuff to do for more experienced gamers as well.

One complaint about Electroplankton was that is was so thin on things to do.  You couldn't even save the music creations you made.  The idea was to simplify things for non-gamers but it simplied too much to the point where experienced gamers were turned off by the lack of depth.

I like this concept and I think if they do it right they can make a game that both groups will like.  If it was a 100% non-game it would be a total waste of a cool concept.  Logically there has to be some objectives or the game would have no replay value once you explored all the areas.

Ian Sane invents Grand Theft Scuba Diving!

I like it.  You know what, my Grandad would actually consider buying this game.  He's one of those people that I thought, "Oh, he'd NEVER buy a game system, Nintendo's plan is foolish."  I still don't think he'd buy a system, but it's nice to see Nintendo coming up with products that aren't typical on the market.

Grand Theft Scuba Diving.

There's a really tasteless Steve Irwin joke in there that I just don't have the heart in me to make.

Speaking of which, where's a link to info on this game?  I'd love to learn more.

Also, now that I think about it, where's Miyamoto's new IP?
Title: RE:Official Forever Blue thread
Post by: Kairon on September 15, 2006, 11:09:33 AM
I agree with IanSane because Scuba Diving = Japanese Garden. The concept is the same: something new to discover or investigate around every bend. You can't just set people lose in a sandbox and expect them to entertain themselves, you need to give them goals. Some of us are gifted enough to build sand castles, but the rest of us need to be given guidance on where we need to swim, what we need to see, and how we can be excited about it.

Maybe Grand Theft Scuba should be built around taking film or photographs of these underwater visions for conservation's sake?

Kairon that is some really great ideas.  It would be awesome to be playing that game and someone walks in the room and thinks your watching PBS or the Discovery Channel or something.

At first i was thinking more of a pikmin kind of exploration vs Grand Theft Scuba Diving but yeah good is good.

I was thinking more like Pilotwings... under the sea!!  Cue the music!

I was also thinking Pilotwings when you said it, because PILOTWINGS is the ORIGINAL sandbox game!  Grand Theft Auto just steals all the credit.

Man this game has so much potential, but I have a feeling I'll love it no matter what direction it takes...

I'm sure there will be objectives, like "Find such and such fish" or "Find this wreck," which could make the game an adventurer's wet dream... ='D

If they made a waterproof cover for the remote I would play this in the bath tub. The built-in speaker would make it even more awesome. Fully "immersive" gameplay.

Ok. I like the photo taking idea!

What else? Treasure hunting could be something worth including. That adds the idea of currency in the game to buy things for your virtual scuba diver. Let's not just limit that to snorkeling fashion. . . How about things to add to your boat? Yeah. Boats!

You could upgrade it or yes. . . perhaps even make your own luxury yacht to host your own scuba diving parties.

I dunno. Just thinking.

I was trying to dig that up and couldn't find anything, I don't think it has been revealed yet.

Update:

According to IGN it is made by the developer Arika, and apparently is a follow up to the Everblue series (I am not sure about this though, this is going by a gamefaqs post but Akira is the creator of those games) which was on both PS1 and PS2.

Here is what has been officially revealed:
Quote

"Developed by Arika, this diving game uses the Wiimote for performing a variety of diving maneuvers. The ocean changes based on time and season. Using Wi-Fi, you and a friend can meet up in the ocean and dive together."

P.S. Apparently the Everblue games are in the love em/hate em category. I was reading through gamespot.com's review for EB2 and they gave it a 6.1 (but it appears from the gameplay videos for Wii you can do alot more), but hey if you are interested here is a link to the gamespot.com review

Thought I would be bump this with NEW information including a release date:

- Explore underwater at your own pace
- Explore with a friend via wifi
- Treasure-hunting mode
- Play with and study sea creatures
- Take pictures for a magazine
- Be a tour guide
- Explore ocean and find underwater sea ruins

Release date is August 21st, so I can't wait. This could be a really fun (and relazing) game, especially with the Wi-Fi co-op.

Also new pictures of the game are here. Those visuals look gorgeous in places.

To each their own, I can see why it wouldn't be for everyone but personally I am ready for a (hopefully) good exploration game which is focused on exploration rather than fighting or trying to beat the game. Like Animal Crossing, this could be a fun getaway game even if it is for a few minutes each day.

And is co-op only a two-player affair? I guess so.

The underwater visuals look amazing, though the above water pictures look average at best (Which doesnt' really matter considering the game takes place UNDERWATER).

This is proof that sucky visuals on Wii have more to do with laziness than anything else. I don't see how else to explain why games like BWii, Mario Strikers Charged, and Forever Blue which are made by relatively small developers are looking better than what most of the big boys have been able to do with Wii.

You expected a Frist person view? I thought it was pretty clear from the pics and the early video it would be a 3rd person viewpoint (Maybe there is a first person camera choice though).

It's definitely good looking I'm just asking what the point is?  What's the gameplay like? Is that all you do swim and interact with random animals?

Not saying that it isn't beautiful and that swimming around and interacting in a wide immense ocean with its various creatures isn't interesting but I'm curious what else there is.

Is there a log book and data on all the wild life and stuff? That is something I could see myself getting into. Interacting and learning about what the creatures are....it'll be like MP without all the killing =)

Well there are treasure hunts, exploration of old sunk ruins, and yes, interaction with animals.

I wonder if they will have some turbulent parts of the game where you are attacked by a group of sharks or jellyfish or whatever and have to some how use your environment to get to safety.

In all seriousness, the game looks really good, although it might be the type of game you play to chill, definitely not an audience game. I can see a lot of people getting bored by just watching (unless there are surprises, like shark attacks and butt ugly fishes).

What is the online mode for???...Nintendo should get rid of the friend codes and add voice chat so you can go scuba diving with your girl (or guy if that's how you like to swing it...or in this case swim it)...

Now imagine if they made an Adventure RPG based on Waterworld...an underwater Zelda...speed up the engine...add some killing and a huge radioactively evolved shark...and some sailing above water...I like it already...

....Nah...the game is fine as it is...my wife will probably enjoy this game a lot...

How do you... voice chat... when you're.... underwater??? LOL. But yeah, I get ya. This'd be the perfect game to ease into voicechat with. Especially since it's coming out the same day as BWii, which also would benefit from voice chat.

Endless Ocean - 10/8/9/8

Forever Blue
- feels a little like a simulation, exploring areas gradually
- clever production sucks you in totally
- with the change of camera view, you can get lost at sea
- you can explore the aquatic life as much as you want or you can go looking for events
- there’s lots of stuff you can do, play at your own pace
- production is great, you can feel the mystery and magnificence of the ocean
- thanks to the effects of the mysterious music, the game feels very real

Quick side story:  I just got married and am having gaming withdrawals due to marriage.  My wife just saw my 90+ GCN, DS, and Wii Collection 2 1/2 weeks ago.  Last night, she just hit me with a bombshell saying that she beat Ocarina of Time in 1998 and loves Zelda.  I played a little Twilight Princess and she's excited.

Relevance of side story:  Endless Ocean may help to convert my wife into gaming and make it okay for me to play.

Buy Endless Ocean Campaign...I'm with it!!!

Famitsu scored this game unusually high, I guess it must be pretty decent. I have less reservations about getting it, though I still doubt that I'll be getting it before a price drop.

Side Note: I'm glad they changed the name of this game (in America). Forever Blue sounds too much like Lost in Blue, Endless Ocean works better, IMO.

Looks like Nintendo's taking the whole "Blue Ocean" strategy a bit literally, eh?

Sorry, I had to get that out.

The graphics are another example, alongside Mario, Metroid, and a few others, that the lack of graphical quality in Wii games is not nearly as much about the console's hardware capabilities as it is the developers' lack of effort. Hopefully these will raise the bar for the future.

In any other year I would seriously look at this, but I have way too many other things I need to buy (anyone who says Nintendo doesn't care about traditional, hardcore games doesn't know what they're talking about; I dare you to find one year in the past decade where Nintendo has had a better traditional lineup than Metroid Prime 3, Battalion Wars II, Fire Emblem, Super Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Bros. Brawl). This is definitely something to look for in the occasional lulls in the release schedule that pop up.

2002. Replace BW and FE with Eternal Darkness, SFA, Animal Crossing, Doshin, Cubivore.
Title: RE: Official Endless Ocean (aka Forever Blue) thread
Post by: NWR_insanolord on July 25, 2007, 11:52:38 PM
I didn't much care for Star Fox Adventures, too much of a collectathon, and Doshin wasn't released outside of Japan, so it doesn't really count. Animal Crossing isn't exactly traditional/hardcore; I absolutely love the game, but it doesn't fit with what I'm going for here. Melee was December 2001, as well, so Brawl goes in with BW and FE as games that had no equivalent in 02. Prime, I'll give you; I think Corruption will be better but once you get past a certain point of greatness it doesn't really matter. And, while I seem to be one of the few remaining people who really enjoyed Sunshine, I think Galaxy is going to be ten times as good as it was.

Even with all your games, it would have been only a little better than what we are getting this year. I forgot to mention Strikers, the first proper online game for the Wii as well, and I wasn't even counting Super Paper Mario from earlier in the year. But for what I'm saying it doesn't really matter; I'm just fed up with all these people who think the world is coming to an end because Nintendo is broadening their target market. We are getting one of the best years ever in terms of first-party development and yet people persist in saying that Nintendo has completely changed and they don't care about traditional/hardcore games anymore.

Whe...When did we get Doshin? GIMME GIME GIMME!

Also, Eternal Darkness was released much earlier in the year, more the time frame of SPM, SFA is a game that... we don't talk about that... and although I love both Cubivore and Animaql Crossing, those are more akin to Enbdless Ocean and MySims than actual, traditional, blockbuster, "OMG HARDCORE!" games.

I think Holiday 2007 may be Nintendo's best lineup in a long time indeed.

The Japanese version had some bugs in it that they could be busy fixing, and apparently it has big load times so they could be fixing that too. Most likely they are just trying to find a nice place to put it though where another game wont overshadow it, but I highly doubt a place to breathe for Endless Ocean exists (haha get it).

Not so fond of your own medicine, aren't you? :p

In all seriousness I think the game looks really cool and the fact that you can play with your friends online makes me excited for it. I just don't see it as a game that will make or break the Wii's holiday lineup. Like I said, the game is better suited for calmer months in which gamers have played all the killer apps to death and hype has died down.

I have a feeling that is what Nintendo intended. The game is going to be a hard sell so they are hoping with the new release date and a lower price point that people are going to be more apt to get, perhaps selling enough to merit a sequel (I can dream).

Curiosity got me and I bought the game together with my mother. First impression (played the first mission, maybe 10 minutes) wasn't so good, for a game about observation it's not very pretty, the environments look like low Gamecube or PS2 level and the animation is very mechanical (especially the dolphin and penguin I saw looked like crap). Interacting with the fishes is very limited, you can poke them, stroke them or grab them but the ones I saw didn't react in any way, the only way to tell you did anything was the icon that showed up. No flinching, no looking around, nothing. Only feeding got them to react. You have to "level" your interaction with the fishes by repeatedly doing stuff with them to unlock better levels of description for them (without level 1 you don't even know their name). Says poking and stuff takes higher levels too, maybe the fishes will start to react at a certain level. Of course the humans look ugly but that's not the focus of the game anyway. There's limited character customization but you aren't told what the options will look like before you pick them.

There are missions and hints around to guide you to interesting spots and of course a completion list. Controls are reasonably easy though it took me a while to figure out that stroking is done with a shaking gesture instead of moving the pointer over the fish. Easier to navigate underwater than in Super Mario Galaxy.

When on deck you can sit in a chair and look at the sea, would have been nice if swimming to the surface also moved the camera above the surface so you could look around.

Anyway from EuroGamer, who had one of the harshest reviews of Endless Ocean. While they point out what they consider flaws quite clearly, visuals are NOT one of them.

It's a good thing the fish, seals, penguins, dolphins, jellyfish, sharks, seahorses, whales and coelacanth of Endless Ocean are so exquisitely rendered. All the sea life is as believable and beautiful in its appearance as it is ridiculous in its diversity.

Alright been playing for a few days now, and the game is definitely beautiful, the best looking game on Wii. (I haven't played Galaxy yet). It took a while for me to get into but now i'm starting to really enjoy it. While this pretty much defines "non-game" there's still sort of a set path and "missions" to do but at the moment i'm just exploring on my own and it's really satisfying seeing all the different types of underwater environments. The soundtrack as a whole is very good and immersive too.

KDR you get more options to do stuff as you progress through the first hour or two. 10 minutes is nothing in this game. Anyway I still have heaps of ocean to explore.

Does the game look like a low Gamecube game? Seriously I think Endless Ocean is getting unfairly treated in reviews by some publications, the game is meant to be a casual experience with a focus on exploration, I think it should be rated on how well it accomplishes that. It is like Nintendogs getting compared to the excitement of Mario Galaxy or something, the games SHOULD NOT be compared, though I see this happening with the Endless Ocean reviews with comments like "it is too simple".
Title: RE: Official Endless Ocean (aka Forever Blue) thread
Post by: KDR_11k on November 26, 2007, 01:21:17 AM
The graphics do look kinda weak to me, above water it looks like those CAD generated images but above water isn't a focus anyway. The animations just struck me, I would have expected them to make the anims more natural (especially after Nintendogs which supposedly has very natural animations) but then again I guess casuals don't know that realtime graphics can do convincing animations too so they don't care.
Title: RE: Official Endless Ocean (aka Forever Blue) thread
Post by: KDR_11k on November 27, 2007, 06:06:22 AM
Hm, looks like the models have the potential to look good but for some reason the image is grainy and faded or something, really looks PS2ish from that effect. If I hadn't tried it on two different TVs I would have blamed the TV. The animations are problematic independent of that though, especially for animals on the boat.

Nice effect that the plants get pushed out of the way of the camera, would be nice if they reacted to the diver's body too though (instead of just clipping through...). Oh and I first encountered the zone limits. Bah, those are annoying. You see something interesting and can't go there because the zone doesn't include it. I saw the blue whale but couldn't reach it because of the limit. Some other invisible walls are there too. I think those are a horrible idea in a game for casuals, they aren't used to the concept of simply limiting the playfield without visible obstacles.
Title: RE: Official Endless Ocean (aka Forever Blue) thread
Post by: blackfootsteps on November 27, 2007, 10:38:29 AM
I also have the game but I don't have any problems with the graphics nor have I really taken any notice of the animation in a critical fashion. Sure seals on the boat don't move around gracefully but they don't in real life either. Once underwater the fish/ marine life animations are very capable I think. A quality example is the turtles in the lagoon, which look and behave just like the ones I saw in the waters around the Whitsundays in Queensland.  I'm also very satisfied with the graphics, they are quite beautiful and most importantly they are believable. I think the little details help to improve visual appeal even further, especially when you zoom in close on coral and see the current shifting back and forth and see the particles in the water swirling about.

However KDR's dive zone complaint is  an annoyance that I share, I assume it's so the game doesn't have to load the whole ocean every dive. Perhaps if the game explained the restriction better it would make more sense as it doesn't really provide a reason why you are restricted to a certain radius around the boat (Eg it could have said that you could only remain in communication with the boat within that area or something similar). The interactions are limited, your diver doesn't actually touch the fish/ marine life (with exceptions) but when you feed a fish and then it follows you around I find it quite magical. The only other complaint I would have is the text that is used in your 'logbook'. It's difficult to read, and reminds me of the terrible typography in games like ISS 64 and G1 Jockey. This is a pity because I love the facts that they do have about the creatures and the moving animations in the book are stunning.

That being said I really adore this game and it has been the only thing to drag me away from Metroid.  Take my opinion with the knowledge that I do love the ocean and all things related so perhaps I am biased?

I just got it and it's nice, sort of like a diver's Pilot Wings, but not as goal oriented. The camera is sort of strange, but easy to get used to. Since the goals aren't forced on the player I'm trying to figure why

If anyone wants to try the wifi feature here's my info: 3285-0635-2060 Send me a message and I'll add you back.

I'm through most of the disguised-tutorial section, I'm digging it so far. I like the MP3 playback, but it seems to be only one song per dive :/ Very laidback game, on the things to do on the boat is just sit in a chair and stair at the water. Seriously.

I'm amazed by how addicting the game is, I could barely pull myself away from it. So much to explore, along with various other activities to do (such as training your dolphin) not to mention the day and night bring out different marine animals. One of the best $30 I've spent in a long time on a new game.

thanks, but that isn't accesible to me. Sometimes I forget to mention I live around here and makes the shipping issue more difficult. However I think good old Amazon will be sufficient. I'll give it a try since apparently the game won't arrive here until late february.

I played the game for close 5 hrs last night and I LOVE it. Easily one of my favorite Wii games, and the visuals ASTOUNDING in areas, bordering on gorgeous. My favorite area to explore so far is a tie between the Abyss (Complete with some of my favorite "giants of the sea" and the ancient ruins. The game is great.

I went on a dive with Evan tonight, the communication leaves a little to be desired, but it's not like you can talk underwater
Title: RE:Official Endless Ocean (aka Forever Blue) thread
Post by: Svevan on January 29, 2008, 05:58:25 AM
The dive with Shy was both neat and disappointing: since I just showed up at Shy's boat unannounced, we had no plan. Me being inexperienced, I was hoping Shy would take the lead. He did, and we swam through some stuff, but we had no idea WHAT to do since there are no real objectives in this game. It really seems like it would work better if the two players are going to the same new area together and exploring it gradually. I could imagine the Mermaid Caves being awesome with two people, as the limited communication would work ("Look at this!" "OK." "Wait!" "Follow me."). For just a "drop in, let's swim hoser" type situation, it is not really workable.

I may be wrong but besides that one instance where you break open the top of a building the currents are more like puzzles where you use currents to take you to different rooms.

Went on a dive with Michael Flynn today. Two words: UNDERWATER PEN.

I'd like to believe we really do live in a world where I am an amateur marine biologist who becomes wildly popular for petting lots of fish, and is occasionally visited via jetski by friends who go on dives with me and make fun of the animals. I also would like to believe that becoming a marine biologist does not make it wrong for me to write "shlt yeah" next to a manatee.

The shape on the right is Flynn's trace of the Man-t, underneath is the first ever underwater "lol." The shape up above is Flynn himself.

The shipwreck moves around.  Once you get all of the compass pieces it'll give you coordinates it might be at.

Anyhoo I just beat the main "story" of the game the other day.  Now I just get to kick back and search for treasure.

"Beat" the game! Final fish is cool, still a lot of stuff to find and unlock

Best value at $30 on the Wii so far. This is a hard game to categorize. It's a sandbox game like GTA, but plays so different from any other sandbox game. I think the closest equivalent to this game is Animal Crossing.

as always late to the party. Well play asia wasn't actually good at all, their annoying payment verification forced me to desist in the attempt. I've never played this game, but I got it for my sister as a gift a few days ago, and spent a couple of hours watching her play it.  Considering the amount of time she's put into it, I can't help but feel that it's something very special.  There's an untapped audience out there subconciously begging for games with no real conflict in them.  Rarely will you encounter a game as wholly benevolent as this title.
