Title: Official Wii Events thread
Post by: GoldenPhoenix on September 13, 2006, 01:41:11 PM
I thought I might as well make a thread dedicated completely to the events going on within the next 24 hrs so it is easier to sift through the information! Anyway does anyone have any advice as to what site will have the best refreshed updates?

Your best bet will be to use the collaborative power of internet communities to your advantage. Refresh your favorite active fanboi message board forum (Like PGC (or...GAF)) and at least one of the die-hards who posts there will make their way through the internet traffic jam that we can expect to bring back news that would've been so much more difficult for you to get on your own.

For now, what I got is that IGN-Wii will update later on at night, www.codenamerevolution.com apparently will do a live update. I guess now it's just a matter of wait and see.

10:38 AM: Conference has officially started! Iwata is here along with several other Nintendo big wigs from Japan. The speaker is introducing everyone. Iwata got up and took a bow.
The credibility of this blog is in question at the moment, it's quite odd how no other sites on the net are reporting anything

The remote and nunchuck attachment are *expensive*. 3800 yen for the remote is roughly $30, and an additional 1800 for the attachment is $16. Seeing as prices are higher for Nintendo products in the USA, my guess is that a complete controller package will be 50 dollars.
Ouch.

Man do I love being a Nintendo fan! Ok so Japan gets Zelda and Pokemon on day one?
Pokemon Battle Revolution looks great IMO. The graphics look amazing, they are a nice leap from Colloseum, which actualy had many of the pokemon looking worse than the N64 versions. They actualy touch each other now, I still can't get over that!
Look at Link! He looks so devilish pulling out that weapon. I love that he is being assisted by that creature, hopefully we will be able to fly over hyrule.
Sonic and the secret of the rings, looks like it has the series back on track. Lets just hope 11 other characters don't become playable during the next press conference.
Im so tired now, I have to sleep, see you all in the morning. Happy dreams await!

Everything about this interface is brilliant. It easily ranks in the top five I've ever seen, anywhere. That's with all the computers and programs I've used. The Wiimote is so versatile, the interface so vast and easy to use (yet complex in size and options). Could be the best. I didn't think I'd get pumped about the interface.

Holy crap I just got done watching the teaser and I'm blown away. Some of those games look jaw dropping (what is that underwater game? That looks like a visual treat) and FUN. So many games to take in though, but if a fair share of them turn out to be high quality maybe the 250$ will not hurt the Wii as much as I thought. This definately brightened my opinion on the launch date and price.

I want to know how much this package cost Nintendo and only one nunchuck/wiimote. There were reports Wii only cost 70-100$ to make, so that means if you take the retail price for the other stuff you get.
Hardware=100$ 1 wiimote/nunchuck=60$ Hookup wires=no idea can't be that much though Wiisports=Don't know the price but it is 38$ more than Japanese package, you can't tell me the game would have even sold for that price! Ummmm, a cheap stand (maybe we are getting shafted on that too) and the sensor bar? What is that like 30$ tops if you are genorous.
For some reason I feel the consumer is getting shafted and NIntendo is going to make a profit on the console unless there is more to the hardware than originally reported. On the controller, I'm not really that surprised by the price, I'm more surprised by them splitting it up! I've always figured though it would be around 50$ because the technology can't be cheap and XBox 360's traditional controller, the Wireless version, is 50$.

Not when you are trying to competitively price a weaker console, my figures were genorous too. I wouldn't be surprised if they are making 70-100$ on each system sold if those supposed production cost numbers are right.

That price is already severely limiting who will be able to afford one, it will probaly sell out at launch but what about after? Pretty much every system sells out at launch, but it is after christmas that things start to change. When it appears you are making alot of profit on each system sold and your competition is breathing down your back with better hardware at 50$ more (which could easily change within the next few weeks) things start to look alot tougher. A 180-200$ price range would have been a good gap, but a 50$ gap is going to look like a terrible buy compared to a system that perceived to wipe the floor with Wii graphically.

I was very impressed with all the features and videos from the press conference. It is shaping up better then I expected.
I am fine with people complaining but can we keep the price whining contained in a single thread so the others can actually be used to talk about the new features?
Does anyone know what that person making program is for? Is that your profile for games like Wii sports? Is that character also what is sent to other Wii's instead of a gamertag/friendcode?

You realize that retailers don't sell products with zero markup, right? Just because the MSRP is $250 that doesn't mean Nintendo is collecting $250 for every system sold. I'm not sure what the typical console (or electronics in general) markup is, but with most other products it's anywhere from 10% to 50%.

Vudu is exactly correct, I know that the Slimline PS2 retails for $129.99 but retailers buy at $69.99. That is a $60 price markup, which is HUGE, nearly 50%. I wouldn't be surprised if the Wii was marked up more than $50 as well. Figure the Gamecube had 0 shelf space, so maybe to reclaim some space in game stores Nintendo had retailers mark up the price of the system a bit that way the retailers make more money and are more interested in carrying Nintendo products and setting aside shelf space for them.

The way it normally works with retail price is: The Distributer buys the Product from the Manufacture, The Distributer then turns around and sells the item to the Retail outlet for 50% more, The Retailer then turns around and marks it up another 50% before the consumer buys it.

Maybe Animal Crossing for the Wii will have local weather affecting your village? (Though I guess that means more gyroids and more rare fish for people who live in rainy climates...)
I dunno, the weather could affect certain games somehow, whether for major or minor gameplay purposes.

That release date sucks so BAD...well for me at least. I'm actually going on a family vacation from Sunday the 19th to Wednesday the 22nd, then it's fricking thanksgiving....man oh man.
What should I do, stay up and find a midnight sale before I go on vacation, or just order one and have it waiting for me when I get back? There's no way in hell I'm going out shopping on black friday or that weekend, I'll be home playing my Wii!

When I use to sell video game console and home audio/video equipment, consoles only had about a 2-7% markup.

$50 GameCube games had something like a $10 markup for resellers. Dunno about the console.

Many retailers (Circuit City, Best Buy, etc.) were selling the original Xbox at a loss. I spoke to an employee about it and they were forced to drop the price of the consoles below cost.

Post by: Donutt007 on September 14, 2006, 09:58:55 AM
yup, that's what happens to the older stuff. That's why as the system gets older there are more and more value packs, the real markups come from the accessories, games not too much. I rememebr the accessories having like a 30-80% markup, usually the aftermarket brands were always the biggest money maker, which is why you'll see them throw in a console with two madcatz (or whoever) controllers, an aftermarket memory card, and a greatest hits game. They suck up the loss off the console by forcing you to buy the accessories.

07:55.56 - I Don’t Feel Like Dancing is playing. Gerhard Florin from EA has a quote up: apparently Wii is ace!
The megaton could come any second now!

Quote 13:10 - Aha! We’re onto the Wii now! Oh, well I thought we were. Shibata just left the stage. Ah! Logan is back and we’re about to see Wii Boxing in Wii Sport for the first time. Literally, my knickers just went damp. Apparently, Shibata is going to take on Iwata! One round in the ring!
Oooh this is quite good. You punch and jab with the Wiimote and guard by holding the nunchuck and remote close to you. AAAAAND Satoru Iwata has just come on stage to tell Shibata off - it was all big comedy ruse! (IGN UK)
Perhaps Iwata can punch us out with some huge announcements next!

Quote 13:16 - Today, says Iwata, it's time to introduce the fifth mileston in Nintendo's strategy - the Wii Channel. And the offers a much tougher sell for Nintendo. Games consoles don't travel see! So generally, they're only seen by the people who live under that roof. Iwata says, to expand console audience, Nintendo started by increasing the number of gamers playing in one household.
When the Wii is first turned on, they'll see the Wii channel page. First up is the Disc Channel, used to access either Wii or GameCube titles. Now he's going through things like the photo software designed to offer "simple organisation and manipulation of photos".
Iwata is good at manipulating photos, but better at manipulating my emotions.

Quote Wii will have its own range of Touch Generation software too. Although he's just buggered off the stage, so who knows what they'll be.
13:25 - Ah! Logan's back and she's showing us Tennis. She's bandying around the names 'Tim Henman' and 'Greg Rezetski' - a name I've never needed to spell before. Logan's just spend a good five minutes hunting around for a bunch of avatars bearing likenesses to them. And now the curtains have just whizzed open and there's a fake tennis court on stage! Guess who's there! Yup, REAL LIVE TENNIS STARS!
YAY!

Actually, that was just something I made up to cover the fact that most of my posts are first party.
Quote 13:29 - My fingers are starting to hurt now. ANYWAY, there's a game of - ohmygodyou'dneverhaveguessed - Wii Tennis going on now against Tim and Greg and Fischer and Shibata. It's all a RIGHT LARK. Incidentally, hilARIous incident earlier - one of Tim Henman's balls flew off the stage and nearly gave the person behind me concussion just after I posted the last update. Back to the game though: Tim and Greg are losing with 30-15. 30-30 now. Tell you what, I'll just post again when we have a clear winner.

Quote 13:35 - Somewhat embarrassingly, I was just staring at the ceiling so I have no idea who won. Sorry. AH! European launch specifics. Launch games first! Wii Sports, Wii Play - which enables novices to get the hang of the controller. It'll be bundled with a second controller. Just like the Japanese 'My First Wii' package in fact. Zelda too, obviously Wario Ware will arrive 'just after launch'.
13:38 - Tony Hawk, Rayman, Red Steel, Monkey Ball coming from thirdparties amongst other things.
13:39 - WII LAUNCH DETAILS: European launch date December 8 2006, priced at £179 (249 Euros). Package will include console, Wiimote, nunchuck, cables and all that jazz. Oh and Wii Sports. Er, games will cost £35 - £39 in the UK and 49-59 Euros elsewhere. Europe, for example. Sorry about the slackness there. I was updating two places at once.
$249 euros! That's like, I don't know what that is! It's too early in the morning for me to make jokes!

He's inviting us to go try the damn thing out for ourselves. And - gasp - a huge gaping chasm has opened in the wall behind him and everyone's being sucked through, like huge electronically-obsessed sheep. Or something.
