Title: How the Wii came to Be
Post by: BlackNMild2k1 on September 08, 2006, 03:44:54 AM
Over at Nintendo of Japan there is a new feature where Iwata sits dowen with the creators of the Wii hardware and discuss how the Wii came to bii.

Its all in japanese and I can't read it, and the translation programs will make your brain bleed from trying decipher what the hell they are talking about, so here is a recap of the interview provided by blog.wired.com.

Not much info, but it is supposed to continue tomorrow too, so hopefully something more will come of this.

Yeah, I was at a party the other night and a couple 360's were there. All I heard all night long was how they wished the 360 was more like a hybrid car. I mean, that's what everybody wants and looks for in a game system.

I was all like, "Amen brother, amen."

Interesting how the always-on thing was a starting point. The old regime of Nintendo didn't really give online the time of day.

It makes perfect sense to me that Nintendo has only pursued online once it gets an internal vision of what they want the online experience to be like. Nintendo is not very likely to do something just because it's the accepted norm in the industry, they'd rather see actual real artistic and financial benefits before they pursue something. Just like the DS online was guided by a vision of being free, X-Box-Profanity-free, and easy to jump onto, the Wii's online is being shaped by Nintendo's vision of a system that is "new" every day and that can change the gaming experience due to this ability.

Here's hoping that since Nintendo has started with this WiiConnect24 idea, that they have some really interesting ideas over how to take advantage of it.
