Title: Nintendo Annouces Two New Wii Titles
Post by: Pale on August 23, 2006, 01:11:52 AM
Mario Strikers Charged and Battalion Wars II are coming to Nintendo's new system.

Nintendo just finished up their press conference at the Leipzig Games Conference.  Though no Wii launch details were shown like everyone hoped, two new games were announced.

Battalion Wars II

PGC will bring you more information and screens as they become available.  Special thanks to BigJim, ShyGuy, Wandering, and IceCold in Planet Chat for helping with information gathering.

Battalion Wars online!!! I am in heaven.  I know not many people played this game on the GameCube but multliplayer (and some improved controls, now available courtesy of the Wii) were the only things missing from a very fun game.  So happy right now.

I remember the Strikers rumor that was floating around, but the BWii was a complete surprise to me.

Enemy buildings can now be captured and made use of

I'm not sure if I particularly like this.  The game was pretty complicated to beginning with from a management side.  If done well this could be great but I don't think that will be easy in the least.

Has there been any confirmation these will be out in 2006?

I am really proud of Nintendo right now.  They are really pushing hard on a variety of games, and really have been treating there new franchises with respect and trying to get them out sooner rather than later.

BW was a great Cube game, that didn't catch on because of the decline of the Cube.  Nintendo saw potential and made it a priority game for the Wii, and it will be great.

Strikers had huge success as the new Mario Sports game...Baseball didn't.  Its great to see Nintendo also releasing this earlier, instead of the more traditional Mario Golf and Tennis first.

Finally, Nintendo is cranking out online games.  It will probably be 2007 as the year of Nintendo truly going online.  Mario Strikers, BWii, Brawl.
Now I wish Metroid would be delayed so that it can get proper online treatment.  Push up another First Party game or two in its place would still make the launch a great launch.

2007 is going to have even more suprises come, just you wait.

I hated the fact that I was pretty stuck with the units I started with in BW. Anything that moves it more to an RTS type strategy and further away from an army flavored squad-based game WITHOUT any real forms of healing or recuperation... I eagerly anticipate.

I also eagerly anticipate the 6 total playable races and online co-op!

im with Hocotate on this one; i commented on a rumour floating around that they'd anounce a Strikers sequel at this thing over a month ago and no one seemed to care. i was, and am excited now with confirmation, because it was a great mario sports title. i havent tried baseball, but golf and tennis , tho fun games, didnt appeal to me as much as strikers did. strikers felt very competitive due to its fast paced nature. i hope the sequel is even better.

BWii sounds awesome and I'm really excited to chek this one out. Strikers definitely wasn't my favorite Mario Sports title, but interesting news none the less. All I have to say is please Nintendo bring me a Mario Baseball 2 with Wii controls and online play, you'll be my favorite forever.

HELLLLL YEESSSSSSS

BWii is my #1 anticipated game now.

BWii needs to STAY AWAY from the RTS management/regeneration angle and stick close to the visceral squad-based tactical flavour.  The generally obedient and capable AI is what sets it above your annual WWII 3D Nazi-fest, and the fact you're a field participant rather than an armchair general makes the action intimate (Dolby Pro Logic II flying bullets FTW).  You can't trust Tom Clancy to provide good squad combat anymore, ever since Sum of All Fears.

THINGS GO BOOM.

YOU'RE ALL DEAD.  Kairon is first to go.

I wasn't interested in either game on the Cube and I'm not interested in them on the Wii.  But I am glad to see that this is a sequel to Strikers and not a remake like Miyamoto had been hinting at.  Since both games were largely ignored on the Cube both would seem like candidates for "wiimaking" so it's good that Nintendo has gone to the trouble to make new sequels.

All the love for the original BW makes me want to go back and try it.  Wonder if it's 20 bucks yet.

Awesome game, Rize. Even if it's not $20, do it anyways.

Is it "Battalion Wars 2" or "Battalion Wars II"?

I was disappointed by Nintendo's press conference, 50 minutes of talking about the DS and the only Wii news was 2 games. I'm just pissed that I stayed up until 5:20 AM and we didn't get any important Wii news.

I really wanted to get BW when it was new but got POP2 instead as apresent and havent had money to get any new games for a long time. Its pretty cool that they are making the next one online though, it shows they are serious about going online. I just hope the Wii online gets more support than DS online.

I only just got around to looking at the pictures of Mario Strikers Charged, and I noticed that it looks like Mario is wearing some kind of body armor.  The style of the gloves, or gauntlets, in particular makes me wonder if it's supposed to be some kind of Iron Man cybernetic strength enhancing armor.  I don't recall anything like that in the artwork from the first game.  Oh, and apparently Samus is making a cameo appearance as the ball.

I have to agree with Ian.  I'm glad to see more "traditional" games from Nintendo on Wii, ESPECIALLY with online options, and I think both of these games are good moves, but I'm not personally interested in either.

I've been debating whether to break down and buy Strikers for GC (I'm sorry Peach! Forgive me Daisy! I've been weak!), so I can easily dedicate myself to skipping over that first game and buying the sequel with few reservations.

Now... as for BWii... I bought the first and consider it seriously flawed, and ended up not actually liking it very much. But oddly enough, the appeal of online co-op and finally being able to reproduce my own units instead of having to "hardcore it" through every level (which is very painful for an empathic perfectionist like me) is making the second game almost a guar\anteed purchase from me.

If anything though, the most interesting thing out of this is that both of these games come from smaller third parties (which are based in Europe?), Kuju and that team that did Strikers. Given the example of Rare, Silicon Knights, Left Field and Factor 5, I was sure that Nintendo would've cut off these smaller developers who had experienced marginal or flawed successes. I personally predicted that we wouldn't see Kuju working with Nintendo again....

... and I also predicted that we wouldn't see anything from Geist-creators N-Space either. Interestingly enough, IGN recently reported that N-Space has Wii projects and is hiring for said projects.

As a Nintendo Fanboy, I'm very interested in what is behind Nintendo's continued relationships with these third parties when they've cut ties with larger more successful third/second parties before and when I was so sure they'd do it again.

I skipped both MS and BW on GC, not because they aren't any good but because at the time I just wasn't dedicated to the GC as much as I should have been. However the online component got me very interested in MSC and BWii.

"instead of having to "hardcore it" through every level"

Those of us who "hardcore it" will make sure you don't get a chance to respawn your units.

BWii is what has me excited.  I loved playing the first one until my Cube died on me.  After much debate, I'm just taking it apart to fix it instead of investing money in repairs.  The Wii is too close for that.

And 'hardcoring it' was what really made battalion wars so awesome for me. thought I won't mind making new units.

Great news and both games go on my list.  Hopefully the WiiSTrikers will have more meat to it than on the 'Cube.   It was quite the fun game tho.  Just a bit skimpy.

And hopefully BW will control alot better than on the 'Cube.  It sounds like it will.

I'm excited by both games.

i skimped on strikers too, i just didn't feel like dropping $50.  Been waiting for a price drop on it but i'll get the Wii version when its out.

Neither of these should be day 1 launch titles, i'd be bankrupt......it pains me to think about it......Metroid, Zelda, Rayman, Wiisports, Red Steel, Mario Strikers, and BWii.

I'm prolly forgetting some, which is good because i think if i found out exactly how much id be spending my head may explode/implode........

I think these will mostly like be Q1/Q2 2007 titles.
A while back someone from Nintendo (Reggie, I believe) made a big deal of not making the same mistake as the Cube which had a great launch line-up but had a huge drought afterwards.

I could have bought Battalion Wars for 25€ a while back, it's still 45€ almost everywhere. But I opted for Advance Wars DS and Killer7 (PS2 unfortunately) for that money instead.
