also Miyamoto sated the fates of other previous game projects, Stage Debut parts are being move into other wii games, Mario 128 cancelled and everything was moved to galaxy, and Mario 64-2 had parts moved to other games.

Mario 128 never existed.

I always dig this video up when Marionette comes up. That is the direction I want to see the game take (but with free roaming, Luigi, and not so fugly graphics). The demo is just about the control scheme though.
I thought of Galaxy as 128; I just want multiplayer.

uh, according to IGN's story:
""Marionette is probably more suited for something like the Wii," said Miyamoto. "However, that type of game is difficult. Just looking at it, it seems to be fun, but then you get the feeling of, 'Well, what do I do now?'." Miyamoto feels that in order to make such a game last, you have to give it, among other things, a strong story."
--snip--
"Still, Miyamoto had some partially disappointing news. "We're not working on it any more. However, we'd like to release something like it with the right timing, so we're preserving it in the form of its story elements. When Marionette was being planned, we were trying to use the N64 controller in interesting ways. However, if we now use the Wii remote controller, it seems that those types of interesting elements would appear more naturally.""
Thread fail.

yeah what is this thing about Mario 128 not being Galaxy? everyone assumes it is, when I read the thread's title I thought that Galaxy was the one cancelled.

I remember reading how the Mario 128 demo they showed to show off what seemed like lots of power for the GameCube was part of the over-a-hundred-on-screen-characters thing they ended up using in Pikmin.
But mentioning the sphere does sound like the planetoids in Super Mario Galaxy.

Anoop's memory is jerky. Not really a sphere, since it was possible to push objects off it. But whatever.

I learned 2 important facts from that Demo.
1) It never used more then a 1/3 of the GameCubes power. (Had an indicator bar.) 2) Gamecube disc are really mini pizzas.
To think. That looks nice. Makes me think that only half of the power of the cube was even used.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks (knows?) this, but the "Mario 128 demo" video was total BS. Although it's pretty funny that Nintendo was all like "powerful systems rule!" just 6 years or so ago, and now they're like "good looking games are stupid".

Also how they said that they had a concept of a game where Luigi followed Mario but it never worked out fruitfully.

I thought Mario 128 was Super Mario Sunshine and the only reason anyone suggested otherwise is due to disappointment in Mario Sunshine. It has thus been branded as somehow not being a "real" followup to Super Mario 64 and that Mario 128 was still on the way. As if Nintendo would start work on a Mario game for the Cube and then release Mario Sunshine instead. Mario 128 as far as I know is just some made up term used to describe a sequel to Super Mario 64. Super Mario Sunshine is the follow-up to Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Galaxy is the follow-up to Sunshine. End of story.

Nope, Super Mario 128 and Super Mario Sunshine were two different titles...But then again, Super Mario 128 didn't really have a real direction until a year or two ago...

I always figured Super Mario 128 was a developer's playground of sorts, i.e. a platform on which to try new gameplay ideas to see what works and what doesn't before committing resources to serious development.

I'd guess there's no true or direct connection between the Super Mario 128 GameCube demo and the supposed "other Mario GameCube game" that was often referred to as Super Mario 128.
It's called that because it seems the "logical" name to refer to a sequel of sorts to Super Mario 64, only problem is that game systems aren't compared by bits anymore, really, but if Super Mario 128 came out named as such on the Wii people would be confused and think a generation was missed somehow.

I have 2 theories on Mario 128: 1/ it was just a "show off" for the GC launch, like a super duper demo, or 2/ it somehow turned out to be Pikmin. (which had Omari, which is an anagram of Mario's name)

It works in Japanese since their language is phonetic.
The three letters that make up the name Mario for them are MA-RI-O. Rearrange that and you get O-RI-MA ... or, Olima, which can be easily extended into Olimaa, and the long aa sound is the way the Japanese approximate the -ar sound, in in my name, Carmine, it is Kaa-main.
Hence, it works.
