Title: Why do you like PGC?
Post by: GoldenPhoenix on August 03, 2006, 04:28:00 PM
I am curious to why you guys like PGC so much? For myself I have been amazed by this site, not necessarily because their ability to get news quickly but the active message boards. Unlike other sites I actually feel apart of a pretty tightly knit community where you pretty much get to know the people on the board. Most fanboys, whether they are for Nintendo or any of the competition have trouble stringing together a sentence and tend to be closed minded. Even though PGC members are Nintendo fans, I get the feeling they are more open and don't fall into the "immature" mold as some members on um, other sites. Pretty much everyone is respectful here, and in turn I respect pretty much every constant member on this board (even Ian!). It is a fun enviroment that has yet to see replicated elsewhere. Heck I usually get more excited to see what people's opinions are, whether they are in response to mine or someone elses more so than the daily news.

I like it because I'm here.
I'm here because I'm here because I'm here because I'm here.

Because there aren't 100,000 posters posting nonsense. Instead we've got at max 30 habitual posters, which makes it easier to read anything that is on these forums.

The ideas that come from PGC are amazing. Many controller designs from here (like nemo and Requiem's) were very close to the actual Wii one. Stuff like Zelda being forward compatible are discussed here earlier than many other forums. And do any of you remember BlackGriffen's Long Tail thread before E3 2005 when the Virtual Console was announced? Where is that guy, anyway? Also, PGC has it's little quirks that make it likeable. Finally, the posters. We have a collection of the most intelligent Nintendo fans on the Internet. Some debates are amazing, and really insightful because of these people. And finally, no one here is afraid of some humour, which makes it a pleasant forum to visit.

I ditto everyones above. Except this
Quote And do any of you remember BlackGriffen's Long Tail thread before E3 2005 when the Virtual Console was announced? Where is that guy, anyway?
I'll first need to read it.
Edit: Read the first post. I agree and is Nintendo using that as a manual?

Hey this is no poll. I just want to know why people like it here! If you don't like it, well kiss my behind . In response to others, I too hope that PGC stays small, and the staff stays poor making updates while in the gutter . If that means I can have a nice, cozy, enviroment then I am willing to sacrifice the staff's happiness!

I remember back when IGN started making people pay to use its forums, so people flocked far and wide to find a nice free environment. I've always used PGC as one of my main news sites but never for the message boards until the IGN payment plan. Back then I was known as Hypetails15(god I remember using that number because I had just turned 15, now im 20 yeash...) and when I first joined up, the community seemed so small, it took forever for someone to reply to a topic if I remember correctly.
Now then, for the question at hand. Why do I like PGC? The people who post in these forums are all around good level headed people. Well you all may not be "good," some of you may be evil, but you all sure can hold a nice sensible discussion. When revo-europe use to show its news articles with comments from its users, there would be about 4 or 5 really level headed people. But mostly there were people like Trish(or something like that) who would just troll around, and others who would just call each other names, and just say all this moronic immature stuff. I see alot of garbage like that on the official Nintendo forums to. People posting absolutely pointless statements, or constant arguing because everyone is so... well you get the idea.
Lets take Ian for a quick example of why I like it here. As much as we like to(or did like to) disagree with his seemingly never ending negativity. I can't ever recall a time when he resorted to calling someones mother a dirty name, or started cursing everyone out like some stupid apple hole. It's great that most of our discussions don't lead to verbal abuse on each other. People here have intelligent things to say, don't get so personaly offended when their favorite game gets bad mouthed, and I sware are some of the most open minded people in the world. Speaking of which, ever since WW, and first person metroid, I think everyone has become alot more open minded. I sware the past 5 years or so of being on these boards has changed me as a person, well im more open minded towards everything now.
Even though I hate Sonic Team now, sometimes I still want to talk Sonic games, and for the most part people here aren't very interested in the crap thats been pushed out in the last 2 generations. Discussion wise, Sonichq just doesn't cut it like this place does, too many pointless posts, and people defending Sonic like it was their creation every time there is legit bad press about him. And for some reason when people on those boards thank each other(like oh you are a very creative person) its sickening to me. Reminds me of itchy and scratchy when they were forced to be friends. I don't know why I brought that up, but im glad that luvy duvy stuff aint here!
I don't post nearly as much as some of you, but I am here on these boards just about every single day just waiting to see what you all are discussing. Maybe from this point on i'll join in topics more frequently.

It sucks?
PGC lacks fist so we are here as missionaries whose duty is to earn fist and demonstrate our way of life to others by example so PGC can rise above that of a news site in support of Nintendo Dead Systems.
Is this a poll?

Awesome post, I personally have been a lurker for a few years but recently got involved, I believe I started consistently posting shortly after "Wii" was announced as the official name. That was such a fun and respectful debate that I have stuck around, deciding to become more involved whenever I can. This is such an exciting period when it comes to games and it is great to find a place where you can have interesting and entertaining discussions regarding the Wii.

I don't remember how I found out about PGC, but I remember that I hated the IGN and Gamespot layouts enough that I couldn't stand to get my news from them anymore, and PGC was easy on the eyes. I liked the reporting, too. Eventually I started reading the talkback threads, and as I got to "know" the regulars, I started to read the rest of the forums. I was impressed by the civility and humor of everyone here. I really liked the severe policy on images. The community is just the right size and temperament. In fact, this was the first forum I felt comfortable with since 1996, when I was one of maybe a dozen regulars on some tiny Final Fantasy BBS.

Even Ian. He ROCKS HARD, even though he's not a true Nintendo fanboy and hasn't joined the cult and drunk gallons kool-aid like I have.

i should of read this thread sooner. what else is there to say that hasn't already been said?
i too lurked around these forums for awhile but never making an account and posting. i dont even remember how i came across pgc, i just remember it not being called pgc yet and liking it so much that it bacame a daily site to check up on. i didnt discover the forums until there were droughts in news information and i was suprised to read some of the comments made. i guess in short you could say i like pgc cuz its there when your'e bored
this is the first place i check for any new news, then on to the forums, then on to any other sites. this forum has the most intelligent people i've ever seen on any other forum. not only are our posters intelligent, but they're entertaining as well. its full of characters (ian, bnm, pro666 etc.) and that makes for a great laid back experience when you dont necissarily want to talk about video games. also, you all seem to know how to type! (start you "bring back rat" chants now)
i like that pgc is a smaller community than most other sites because i wouldnt feel the sense of community i feel here if there were hundreds of anonymous posters a day whose post consist of "pwn3d" and "yeah nintendo rox" only. that brings me to another point. just because this is nintendo dedicated sites, the forums arent filled with bashing of the other systems just because they are NOT nintendo. here at pgc, we are a community of gamers and as gamers we all have our own opinions but we have that commond bond that makes us gamers: the damn games! no one will call you teh gayz for playing and, *gasp* even LIKING, a playstation game or an xbox game. its what makes us tick, its waht brings us to the forums and what keeps discussions healthy.
thats what i love about pgc.
sincerely,
loyal citizen of planet gamecube

Oh yeah. I like the reviews and reviewers here, too. I especially like reading the hilarious low scored reviews of crap licensed games. For instance:

Tricks a hamster onto a raft and pushes them out to sea, laughing at them
Flips out and stabs a hamster with a pitchfork

Actually, Ty might have been serious there, but my point stands.

Planet GameCube first caught my attention when I was working on the staff of the short-lived Nintendoeye. PGC was the first site that I knew of to post movies from StarFox Adventures, just before the GameCube unveiling. This made a big impression on the Nintendoeye staff, and I started visiting Planet GameCube as a supplement to IGN. Now it's the other way around.
I got into the forums when a penpal that I used to talk about games with all the time started to write less often. I needed somewhere to expound all my opinions on the latest game news! Since I was already visiting PGC often, and the forums were free, I signed up. Now I waste hours here every week when I should be working!

heh, I've reading the forums for a while (like Nov-Dec 2004, when I finally got rid of crappy dialup ^^) but PGC has been my news source for a while longer (since a couple of days after the GC unveiling.....or, as my memory seems a bit fussy, maybe a bit earlier...)

The Truth is out.
Once you take out the Super dupe accounts you have 8. Remove Karl 7. Remove people with clear roles (Ian and Bill) That leaves you with 5. Take out the rest of the staff.... Oh wait... That puts us into negative... Congratulation!!! PGC Is the first AI ran Message board. Actually we are nothing but thoughts in Newsbots electronic mastermind. Once the remaining humans have been integrated into the Wii Collective later this year this board will be complete.
Yes... You will enjoy being one of us...

Yeah, that was why I was so happy to leave IGN: I abandoned all hope when, in the middle of the Rare sell-off, people were saying that SFA was going to be on the Xbox because of the sale.
It was on that day that I realized the world is too full of ignorance for me to combat any degree of it, and gamefaqs tends to just reinforce that sentiment.

" So you can never ask for member's opinion on something? Seems odd but oh well. "
For the record, the "No Polls" rule existed because it was redundant to start a thread asking for the opinions of others. That's what the Forum is for, so every thread is (in essence) asking for opinions. The rule is, you start a thread by stating your opinion, and others will either agree or disagree, adding to the conversation.
The idea was to stop the lists and attention-whoring, and get people contributing. Overall, I think it was a success, but it depends on close moderation.

I like PGC because we keep plural usage of company names to a minimum.
"Nintendo are making games." Argh! Is that correct usage in other countries? Heh.
But seriously, I've been around since PN2K. It's practically habitual. Actually I've more or less been around since the N64HQ days where a handful of the "classic" PGC folks got started. Damn, it's been a decade. What a misspent youth.
