Title: Radio Free Nintendo - Episode 11
Post by: Svevan on August 02, 2006, 02:32:49 PM
Nintendo Pirate Radio Returns! To make up for its day-long tardy, we've made it extra salty.

I'm failing to see the pirate correlation, really.

Karl and Stan again. Yeah, I know. But let's look past that and give 'em a fair shot. Nintendo Pirate Radio has returned, and for better or worse we have to live with it.  I'm sure there's something interesting in this Podcast, but I'm gonna level with you: I didn't listen to it. Being kicked off Radio Free Nintendo makes me feel like I've been abandoned by my parents, again.

So let's just move it along, shall we?

You can also listen to it on Odeo.

Gaming journalism and public relations are again the topics of this week's cast, and to join our vapid heroes is the one, the only, the traitor Jonathan Metts. Perhaps he was insulted that we didn't let him be funny on the real Podcast, or maybe he was angry at God for making him an Alabaman. Whichever is the truth, he's abandoned ship, so to speak, and is now in league with the pirates, on an Innocent Voyage to adulthood.

The best part of this podcast (so I'm told, I haven't listened to it) is a segment where Stan is forced to back up his audacious review of Mario Tennis: Power Tour. Something Awful can hate us, but I love Stan.

Right, well, if you want to give us feedback, and we do so cherish the rear of your feed, please e-mail us here:

Or let us know what you think by clicking the Talkback link at the top of this page. By the way, what the crap is up with Karl's pronunciation of his last name? I suggest he change it immediately. Or I'll change it. How's Poobucket sound? I'll bet your fiance Lake will love that.

Yet again.  Who is the mysterious person they respond to but I can't hear?  I think it's Stan.

I think its interesting that you guys talk about something besides just what (insert cash in game here) but i think 2 episodes of PR talk is good enough, a third may be pushing it.

I'd like to see you guys tackle other issues such as some state's legislators trying to ban games and what gamers can do about that (http://www.videogamevoters.org/).  Or how about a topic about racism and stereotypes in gaming.....for example name one major character that is asian besides fighting games, the only one i can think of is the guy from Shenmue.

Actually id really like to see u guys try stereotyping as a topic, i think id would be interesting what you guys might come up with.

SK, those are some cool topics, and I'll talk to Stan about it. Nintendo Pirate Radio's got plenty of show ideas, but I'd really like to tackle some of the stuff you mentioned. It may take a while, since NPR's just an occasional feature, but I'll definitely lobby for it.

I don't know if it is just the way Karl and Stan have to record their podcasts, but each voice can only be heard out of one of the stereo speakers. That is, I can't hear both voices when I only have one of the two headphones in my ears.

I'm not sure if there is an easy way to fix this, but when I listen to my iPod at work, I generally only have one headphone in (so I can hear my boss yell at me from his office next door). The other podcasts with Mike and Evan work fine and have been great as far as I am concerned.

Not a big complaint, but just something small that kind of caught me off guard.

This is something we can change; Stan edited them that way so that it would sound more even. I'll bring it up with him so that it'll be resolved for the next NPR.

I like the stereo, but I'll see if Obi will allow for a mono-only option.  If not, then I'll have to go with mono so everyone can hear both Karl and me.

Which ear is Karl?  That's all we really need.

Wow.  I just found out my machine must only be doing mono.

Damn, Stan. That's a mighty fine pirate voice you got there. Were you draining a barrel of Mount [Flamboyant] Rum that day?

I doubt it, Renny. Stan just naturally sounds like Satan. The first time I spoke to him on Skype, a thunderbolt hit my street with every syllable.

Seems like I may be in the minority, but I like the stereo mixing.  It makes it so much easier to tell who is speaking, and it makes crosstalk less of a problem.  Of course, when I'm mixed into both channels, it also makes me sound twice as important.  ;-)

I did some minor research and found that in 1881:

"Clément Ader demonstrated the first two-channel audio system in Paris in 1881, with a series of telephone transmitters connected from the stage of the Opera Garnier to a suite of rooms at the Paris Electrical Exhibition, where listeners could hear a live transmission of performances through receivers for each ear."

That's over 100 years of stereo!  Surely if it's good enough for the French, it's good enough for the pirates.

I personally would not want to live by that philosophy.

As annoying and arrogant they may be, if it wasn't for them, we'd have remained a British colony.  And any culture who invents stereophonic sound is A-OK in my book (plus, in the 1880's they were pretty cool, they hooked us up with the bad-ass Statue of Liberty in that decade.)
