"However, we understand the larger exhibitors have jointly decided that the costs of the event do not justify the returns, generally measured in media exposure."

I'm guessing Sony wasn't happy with the HUGE amount of bad press that it recieved surrounding the PS3
And MS wasn't happy that not only did PS3 not get very much good exposure, but Xbox360 was all but ignored. Is everyone a little bitter that the Wii stole the show and left everyone wanting to get in line just to see what all the commotion was about? Is it really Nintendo's fault that many other booths may have gone unnattended by the masses because everyone was standing in line for Wii?

Interesting.  If they do downsize I wonder what that means for the little guys like PGC.  :-/

They should move to Canada, more specifically Toronto, I want everything close to me.

With the $800 million Nintendo brought in from the DS last year, they could not only afford to do Spaceworld this year but could have the biggest crack buffet in history, enough blow to OD 20,000 attendees.

Now that Nintendo has done such a turnaround of the company and gotten their sh*t together, I'm quite certain that they can hold their own show from here on in.

There were rumors about a SpaceWorld poppin up this year (mainly because Nintendo will not be at the TGS). Then again, they did confirm (or basically confirm) that they would show new games at Leipzig....

All in all I am in favor of a Nintendo only press event. It would make for a better play atmosphere for the press, and thus, better impressions of the games they may be playing.

P.S. "There was a pile of crack this high"

As long as there's still a live stream of Reggie delivering verbal blows at least once per year i'll still have a reason to live.

Where would Sony peddle their lies without E3?

We hear complaints about E3 every year now. I've been to a few and they don't get any better. E3 as we know it probably should be thrown out. It hurts the legit media's coverage, and thus it hurts us.

They should still have their press conferences as usual, though. They're private events run by the companies themselves anyway.

I was thinking the same thing. Nintendo makes a HUGE splash at E3, a complete turn around from zero to hero in the Press' eyes. So now they're ending or downsizing it? I blame Sony.... and MS.

It seems like the time is ripe for change.

You know, I can see where a lot of large, multiplatform third parties like EA would not be that interested in E3 anymore - from the press's point of view, the show tends to be all about the big announcements from Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo, followed by shifts in big exclusives, like Grand Theft Auto on 360 and the Dragon Quest spin-off for Wii.  Nobody cares much about a new game that's coming to all consoles. Off the top of my head, Rayman was the only multiplatform title that seemed to make an impression this year.  Madden sells exteremely well every year, but I doubt E3 does anything for it.  Games like Spore probably get better coverage out of the Game Developer's Conference than E3.

I hope this doesn't hurt PGC, but at the same time I'd have to say that an invitation-only type conference might make more sense, so the media can cover the games more easily and the exhibitors don't have to spend as much money.

ESA head Lowenstein added, "It is no longer in Sony or MS favor to have a single industry 'mega-show.' By refocusing on a highly-targeted event, we think we can do a better job keeping our members and the industry as a whole insted of losing them all to nintendo, and our members are energized about creating this new E3."

Actually Stevey according to another article on there Nintendo, Sony, MS and EA all stated that they had left:

"Once Nintendo, Microsoft, SCEA and EA had stepped out, E3 was history. It was multilateral disarmament."

How could they make a sequel!

Clerks was a classic and Clerks 2 just cheapens it.

Things will be so much better now.  Especially the content that can hit the web during the new event.  More complete thoughts and media thanks to time and space available for press to digest the experience, and less blogs and camera phones.
