Title: Free Wii dev kits???
Post by: Donutt007 on July 29, 2006, 11:07:26 AM
Source - Free dev kits

Just got word of an interesting (and totally unconfirmed) rumor from one of our insiders. It seems that Nintendo is giving Wii development kits to smaller studios. A developer in a big coastal American city apparently received a mysterious package from Nintendo. Office staff, programmers, and even the president weren't aware what was inside. The box was opened, and viola, Wii dev kit. This could be a ploy on Nintendo's part to get as many companies working on Wii games as possible. If this is true, it certainly shows Nintendo has improved its stance towards third party studios, as opposed to the iron-fisted days of yore. As I mentioned, this is totally unconfirmed, could've been some mix-up or miscommunication on the developer's end, but it does come from a good source. Do what you will with this tidbit

Welp.  It looks like you might get your Wii tomorrow now Smash_Brother. Interesting if true but probably a mix up.

And when they charge you for the Dev kit, atleast we will have confirmation on how much it actually cost. Its rumored to only be around $2k.

Perhaps not MS directly, but Rare...

Nintendo and Sony, never (Sony barely makes games for their own systems).  If MS  had an idea that they thought would be good and tie in with their stuff somehow I could see them making it.  Portable MS will develop for who can make them the most money.  Starting as a Software vendor  gives you a more flexible mind set.

If this is true, it's easily one of the best ideas Nintendo has ever had.

Heh, if only.

I think this is a rumor, though, as sending free devkits to near unconfirmed developers would be a great way to accidentally mail development tools to software pirates who will use them to dupe Wii discs.

Also, isn't this a great way to tick off devs who already, you know, PAID for their dev kits?
