Title: Suda's HEROES First Footage!

I love the Killer7 art style, so I'm glad they are going back to it...Interesting premise, and I'm definitely going "HMMMM" over the light saber bits...

Wow...

If this can not be awful like Killer 7, it looks like a buy for the story alone...

Despite being a huge fan of Suda's work, I somehow missed out on this one.  Great Friday gift for me.

That trailer was pretty boring, no wonder it wasn't shown at E3. I'm still interested in knowing what is the whole premise of the game in regards to gameplay and story, even though I have yet to play Killer7. If you are going to tell me to buy it, spare your fingers 'cause I do have Killer7 but I just haven't touched the GC for many months.

OMG! MP4 IS THE WORST FILETYPE OF ALL TIME.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4U4236lzUg

OMG! LOOKS AWESOME! Looks set to be the best game on Wii so far if it's anywhere near as good as Killer 7. Watching this trailer normally if I hadn't played Killer 7 I wouldn't care so much for it, but the fact that it makes no sense confirms it to be just like K7, plus the guys name is Travis in that, could it be -the- Travis? I wonder how the gameplay's going to work in this one? Hopefully they stick with the simplified route in Killer 7, or still keep it simple somehow. I'm guessing we'll be able to swing that lightsabre around ourselves!

It needs to look less like a generic anime though, and more like the realistic unrealistic awesomeness of Killer 7.

The Wiire recently came in contact with Hentona regarding the video, and we received a whopping 600MB zip file containing the footage planned to be shown at E3 2006, uncompressed to be an 846MB AVI file lasting 3 minutes and 45 seconds. The Wiire presents the first footage of Heroes.

SOMEONE DECENT NEEDS TO GET A HOLD OF THIS

The girl's voice wasn't too bad. This game sounds like Killer 11. Kill the 10 other hitman above you to become the number one hit man.

The voices did suck very badly.

It's definitely in-game. You can tell the imperfections in the polygonal models. Plus, do people show FMVs to show off Nintendo products? The video is an FMV, but using the in-game engine to create the cinemas.

Using ingame models does not mean that it's done in the engine.

The voice acting in Killer7 was so good, im surprised by this. Other than that I absolutely can not wait to play this. Killer7 was so appealing to me, and with the new controller I bet this will be much more a joy to play than Killer7 ever was.

I hope the voiceovers are just a placeholder for the real voices. I also hope that what they said in the trailer was just made up on the spot, as absolutely none of it made sense. I mean, come on...

"Congratulations"
"Huh? You want ME to thank YOU?"

Yeah, I don't think she said anything about you thanking her, mate.

LOOKS awesome.

I'm picking up a copy of Killer 7 later today for $10.

I've never played it, but any time I tried to rent it, friends tackled me to the ground like I was about to leap off a bridge, shouting things like "Don't do it! You have so much to live for!" That plus the horrid reviews led me to avoid the game.

But I've heard many people love the game despite most hating it, so I'm going to try it for myself to see what all the damn fuss is about. For $10, it's not like I've much to lose.

Don't let the presence of "guns" and "people" "characters" prompt you to expect an expected mold of gameplay.  Play by the game's mechanics, follow its rules:  they're limited but simple, very straightforward, and easy.  One definite plus is they don't "break" the game's presentation unlike the run-into-walls-gameplay of the classic Resident Evils.

No one's saying it excellent, but we agree it's vivid & entertaining.

I just picked up killer 7 yesterday because I love the style of Heroes.  I've only played Killer 7 for little bit, the style is great, but I must say it is jarring how different it plays then I expected.

I hope we aren't forced to play as Travis Touchdown in Heroes.  Despite the fact that I know almost nothing about the game I thought Helter Skelter was 100 times more kickass.

Killer7 is awesome.

I could see how some people wouldn't really "get it", but I think everyone should at least try it out.  (Well, okay, everyone 17+.)

I still don't get the fine plot details (though it's not hard to find plot analyses on GameFAQs, etc., that are surprisingly in-depth) but I do love it because it's so unconventional and different.  And besides the story, the gameplay is too.  As Pro666 said, it's at least vivid and entertaining, something games of generic genres less often are these days.

(Ironically, perhaps,) I wouldn't mind more of the same, or something similar, in HeROes.

DO YOURSELF A FAVOUR AND PLAY KILLER7.  NOW.

Killer 7 was pretty awesome.  I like the controls just fine, but I found combat to be annoying in some places.  Like I could never kill a giant smile.

Anyway, if nothing else is in common, I'm glad we're getting another game with a similar graphic style.  I was surprised to find that Killer 7 looked quite a bit more appealing in motion than it did in screenshots.  I guess that generally is the case, though.

Stereotypical white haired bishounen don't smoke cigars and generally look less like the guy from Gungrave (long hair does not equal bishounen).

I'd rather play as the guy with the lightsaber. Because, y'know, he has a LIGHTSABER.

BTW, since it looks like everybody is jumping on the Killer 7 bandwagon, I would advise skipping the easy difficulty. It spoils pretty much all the puzzles, plus the action parts are way too forgiving.

Not to be nitpicky, but isn't it "Killer7" (without the space)?

I thought I read that Killer7 had only sold ten thousand copies (I'm sure this was at some point in time, it's probably much higher by now, I hope).  Which is pathetic if true.  I thought even mediocre games could easily do multiple times that much.

Any unique, stylized, and challenging game really should do better than any same-old genre, same-old gameplay, same-old story game.

Post by: NinGurl69 *huggles on July 25, 2006, 07:23:08 AM
It also sold better on GameCube.  So much for the ps2's #1 marketshare and mature gamers!

on many E3 2005 press releases, Capcom wrote the title as "killer7," lowercase no space, which is how I like it.

Neither killer7 nor Heroes are my type of game due to the viloence, but the artistic style Suda 51 employs is just jaw-dropping. I just showed the trailer to my brother (who is a self-proclaimed graphics whore) and he was shocked. Especially by the puddle Helter Skelter steps into at the beginning, and the blue flames.

He was really impressed that those parts were even possible on the Wii (even if it's a cutscene).

Yup, but like I said, I was on my way to rent it a few times and I had a friend literally stop me.

Played 3-4 hours into it so far and here's my take:

This game would have done INFINITELY better if the huge chunk of storyline which we're treated to after the first chapter had come instead BEFORE the first chapter.

My guess is that 90% of the reviewers who harped on this game did so because they got stuck in the first section of the game with the egg layer, had no real story to help them understand who they were or why they were here, and gave up on the game, giving it a 5 of 10 or worse, on average.

The game is presented very much like an esoteric anime, the kind which is dark and confusing at first but becomes clearer as you watch. The problem with putting this presentation into a game is that the natural progression of the game happens slower: if you simply sit there and watch the anime long enough, things will become clear. In K7, you need to play far enough into the game to see the story unfold and without a storyline to enforce their actions, most players might simply decide the game is crap, especially if they don't KNOW the story is coming.

When I first played it, I actually DIDN'T like it. I had this weird guy in a red suit telling me random crap and a clunky interface which didn't exactly cross me as enjoyable. For some reason, I had this overwhelming desire to put the game down and never play it again simply because the game basically tosses you in the water and hopes you swim in the very beginning. I'm certain this killed it for many potential players and reviewers alike. I actually had 2-3 people in the room with me and I gauged their reactions from it: they seemed to have the exact same reaction that I did, initially being put off by the game and even making negative comments about it but becoming interested once the storyline picked up.

I like it so far, especially as the story unfolds, and the voice acting is indeed top notch, but I just can't shake the feeling that the game would have done infinitely better had the player been given a large chunk of the story right up front (the "intro" scene where it explains how the world did away with terrorism before the advent of the Heaven Smiles would have given not only some substance to the story but to the protagonist as well). IMHO, this would have been enough to motivate the player to push on and learn the game mechanics a little better before passing judgment on it.

Though, the game's poor performance doesn't seem to have stopped Suda 51 from making another game (which looks like it might be a prequel to Killer7, what with Travis being Harman's first kill and all...). To be honest, I'm excited about this one because I'm hoping Suda will use the freedom of the Wiimote to add more gameplay to the game than K7 has.

While I like the game, I think the gameplay could have used some more substance. The gameplay itself isn't bad, there's just not enough of it.

Also, anyone else pick up on the Resident Evil influence of the game? I don't just mean the puzzles, but the enemy confrontations and load screens are all very RE-esque.

It takes [gamelay] time to acquire killer7's taste.

Its story pacing and timing are intentional, because it truly is an uphill climb.  Smash is only close enough to realize there's a mountain.

"Also, anyone else pick up on the Resident Evil influence of the game? I don't just mean the puzzles, but the enemy confrontations and load screens are all very RE-esque."

I'd rather traverse the RE1 mansion with killer7's control scheme.  Ditch the running/steering, just give me straight-up puzzles and first-person targetting combat.

The smiles are a thousand times freakier than anything RE0-3 ever offered up.

The regenerators in RE4 still take the cake, IMO, for the freakiest enemy in any game I've played, although the Bone Thieves in ED get an honorable mention.

I don't think that heroes is any kind of prequel to killer7.  I believe the ghost guys name is Travis Bell in killer seven and not Travis Touchdown.  It would be worth putting him in as a character as long as he has all of his awesome shirts.  Also the top seven assassins in heroes would all be the same person.

I think the people from the Wiire pulled it because they said it wasn't ready yet and they weren't supposed to show it.

I actually found it rather compeling that so much was so vague in the beginning.  There were so many questions, I wanted to keep playing just to find out what the hell was going on.  No one ever explicitly explains everything to you because they talk as if they're addressing Garcian, not the player.  The game maintains a sense of discovery in the player all throughout the game.

*bit of a spoiler ahead*

It was Travis Bell, but I've no reason to believe that the name "Touchdown" is his actual last name. I don't think "Helter Skelter" is the other guy's real name, either.

If you remember from the game, Travis was Harman's first kill, 30 years prior to when Killer7 takes place, meaning that Travis has been dead for a while. If the game Heroes does indeed star Travis and he climbs his way to the top and becomes the best killer in the world, I can only assume that this was before Harman takes the top spot by killing him, and given that Travis was Harman's first kill, it means that Harman is currently the uncontested best hitman in the world.

The Travis in this video looks just like the Travis from the game, right down to the t-shirt and hair. Ask yourself this: Suda could have picked thousands of names for this character: Trit Touchdown, Tony Touchdown, etc.

He wouldn't pick the name Travis unless he intended to make a connection between the two games.

30 years before Killer 7 takes place is also in the 70s, where a lot of the name references are from.

Travis in the Heroes trailer also has a pink shirt. It's as good as confirmed for me, and if it's not him, it's a cool reference or whatever.
Title: RE: Suda's HEROES First Footage!

It has to be.

1. The game is once again about professional killers.

2. The graphical style is the same (only enhanced for the Wii), indicating that we're talking about the same universe.

3. Travis bears the same physique, hair and t-shirts as the Travis in Killer7.

4. The references are very 70s (Travis is dressed like he's from the 70s to boot).

5. Suda wouldn't have used the name "Travis" unless he intended to make some kind of reference to Killer7's Travis.

6. The story fits perfectly to indicate that this is a prequel.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure Travis makes references to being a killer in K7 as well, but I could be wrong.

New trailer: http://media.wii.ign.com/media/827/827358/vids_1.html

If this new trailer truly featured in-game visuals then I will say that this game is looking fantastic.
All they need to do is make the dialogue to work more naturally because right now it is just so without emotion.
The voices aren't that bad.

Very interesting bits here from Go Nintendo:

". . . According to the development team, the Wii is a perfect fit for Heroes. They had the idea of the game before the Wii existed, but once they saw what the Wii could do…especially the Wiimote, they knew they had to make Heroes for the Wii. Grasshopper is going to release the title in 2007, and as soon as possible. They think, due to the nature of the gameplay, that sales of 1 million units will be possible."

So. We learn that they mean for it to release suprisingly soon, they felt the Wii controller would be perfect for the gameplay ideas they had, and that said gameplay is apparentlly more accessible as they believe they can sell it well.

Huh.

Oh they better not be expecting sales to ACTUALLY hit 1 million or else they're going to be very disapointed.  Even if the gameplay is amazing, this type of game will still only sell to a smaller audience.  Unless they have a huge Multi-million dollar marketing campaign with ads in every type of media, which I dont see happening.

I think a game like this selling around 300,000 copies would be more accurate if it's a success, and alot better then Killer 7 did.

A million is way, way ambitious.  But I'm willing to help them reach that goal.

I don't think a million worldwide is out of the question, but it's highly unlikely, especially for a game like this.  I dunno, we'll see.  Best of luck to them, though, they deserve it.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aside from a few things (like the music) that looks like the same trailer that was released at E3. I even ran them side by side and the only differences, that I saw, were that Helter Skelter's head didn't pop of and spew blood like in the E3 one, the music, and Travis's "Your fine words..." line was a little deeper. But I'm really looking forward to this game, so I hope we do get some new trailers for it soon.

It wasn't "released" at E3, it was leaked by The Wiire, and wasn't intended to be shown at the last minute.

Apparently they wanted to wait till TGS and make some adjustments before fully backing it.

maby 1 million isn't that far off if it's a good game and it fixes the flaws from killer 7.

remember that every sucessful seres started with a first game, (like metal gear solid, half-life, resident evil, and halo) it's possibel if it's fun enough it can sprout to be a big money maker.

WOW a million! There aren't even a million people that know Killer 7 exists.
Title: RE: Suda's HEROES First Footage!
Post by: Luigi Dude on September 23, 2006, 10:37:29 PM
The difference is the first Metal Gear Solid, Half-Life, Resident Evil and Halo all sold in the millions and were popular from the start.  Killer 7 has only sold around 100,000 worldwide with both the Gamecube and PS2 versions combined, and is only known by us gamers here on the internet.  The rest of the gaming world has no idea what the game was.

This is why Hereos is going to have a hard time archieving huge sales since right now it's a game that appeals to a niche market.  Unless Suda can somehow get Nintendo to help with the marketing of the game which I dont see happening, the game has no chance of mass market appeal.

Sales expectations asside, I think it's pretty exciting how allegedly perfect the Wii's controller is for the game.  I'm interested to see what exactly they have planned.  And the visual presentation is just plain awesome.

This game being connected to Killer 7 is only speculation, and besides it's not like you have to know about killer 7 to find out about this game.  I heard that there going to turn down the bloodshed and languege for this game so it appeals to more people.

I'd rather it sell like crap than they do that. Killer7 was one of the few truly mature titles of last generation, and I'd hate for them to change Heroes just to appeal to more people.

EDIT: I just watched the new trailer, and I can't stand it. The music is crap, and something is lost with Helter Skelter not losing his head.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels like this. Helter's head popping off and the old music were much better.

YES. I've been telling people this for over a year now.

I agree.  It's kind of like censoring anime in the US.  I don't like the creator's original intent being modified for the sake of broader appeal.

Since the creators, in this case, are the ones doing the censoring, not really.

Usually the creator (who generally does a manga) has VERY little control over an anime, particularly when it's being localized in another country...
Title: RE: Suda's HEROES First Footage!
Post by: wandering on September 24, 2006, 08:00:54 PM
No, I meant, Suda, the creator of Heros, is censoring his own game, and so this situation is not really comparable to the censorship of anime, where the creators don't have much control, as you say.
Title: RE: Suda's HEROES First Footage!
Post by: Smoke39 on September 24, 2006, 08:11:58 PM
It could be pressure from people concerned about the game's appeal.  Or if he's really doing it on his own accord, it could be that while he wants it one way, he could see the benefit of toning it down for greater appeal, and self-censoring, which is still censoring.
Or maybe he just changed his mind.

Is self-censoring wrong? cause if I didn't self censor, I would call my boss bad names and get fired.
Title: RE: Suda's HEROES First Footage!
Post by: Smoke39 on September 24, 2006, 09:32:00 PM
I don't like any amount of self-censoring.  I personally think communication is limited enough by language to be further muddled on purpose.

Either way, though, this is art we're talking about, not everyday life.  While people's expectations might make it difficult to never self-censor at least a little bit and still function in society, art shouldn't be concerned with such things.  If art isn't available for unbridled expression, what else is?
Title: RE: Suda's HEROES First Footage!
Post by: Hostile Creation on September 24, 2006, 11:10:18 PM
Self-censoring can be a valuable resource.  Some of the best art and literature comes from forcing yourself not to say certain things.  Creating is just as much about not saying as it is about saying.
I don't think the game needs to be violent and bloody to be good.  I think it will be both of those things even if they do censor it some, and it'll at least be teen (I still expect mature, just not the bloodbath Killer 7 was), but censoring one's self can be put to good use.
It's certainly better than being censored by someone else, when the creator can't choose what is important and what isn't.
Title: RE: Suda's HEROES First Footage!
Post by: Smoke39 on September 24, 2006, 11:17:25 PM
I guess you have a point, but that sort of depends on how you choose to distinguish between "self-censorship" and "choosing what is and isn't important."

Killer 7 rarely struck me as particularly bloody, actually, because the blood was usually so abstract and unrealistic.  Sorta like the excessive blood sprays in Kill Bill.  It seemed less like gore and more like a comical visual cue.

Or maybe they "censored" the game because they actually made an animation error in the first trailer. Have you guys seen the first one? If you did, you would have noticed that Helter Skelter's head was still attached to his body in the original trailer despite the fact that he was decapitated. Check out the part where Sylvia comes in and kicks the dead body.

NEW TRAILER

OLD TRAILER

Look at 2:30 second into the trailer where Sylvia kicks Helter Skelter's body and you'll see it's still in one piece.

Also, Travis Touchdown's voice is different in the new trailer. His acting is slightly less cheesy/annoying, while the original one was more overly dramatic yet fitting for his face.

It would've been easier to just make the head not move than to make the head stay attached, and remove the blood spray. Didn't Suda even SAY he was toning this stuff down to make it "more accessible"?

I remember showing the old trailer to my brother one day, and then a commercial for NBC's Heroes came up right after. Weird.  (Doesn't that show start today?)

Can they name it that?  If Biohazard had to become Resident Evil because of a rock band with that name or whatever, wouldn't Heroes have the same difficulty keeping its name because of the TV show?

I don't know how trademarkable the word "heroes" is.

Cell shading FTW. Cell shaded games are proven to be at least ten times prettier then non-cell shaded games. And cell shaded lightsabers? Fuhgettaboudit!

This game has officially joined the ranks with the obvious first party offerings as one of my most anticipated games for the Wii.

Well, since there's only ten assassins ahead of you, I'd imagine there's more to it.

It's nice to see a game based on the conventions of good anime for a change. Complete with terrible dubbing.

I always liked that part. We see his head come off and the blood spew out in the reflection on the side of a building, but then in "reality" we see that the head didn't actually come off. But then again, I'm just weird.

Oooh, done by Billy!  Nice.

Anyway, this sounds pretty good.  One thing I took notice of was that the game isn't considered part of the Killer 7 series...Capcom already owns that.  So it seems like this will be vaguely connected to Killer 7 at best.  I'm interested to see how the controls turn out given how Killer 7 played.  I like the art style even more.  It seems sharper and a little less bizarre and abstract.

You're right, this opens up a whole new angle. Now what does Destroy mean? Well, Troy is Troy, of course, and "des" is "of the" in German. So your opponents will be Trojan saints! They'll be all like, yo, I'm a trojan, and a saint, be-otch! I beat you to death with my crucifix-spear! Yeah, I'll stick my rosy fingers of dawn right up your wine-dark sea, you unrepentent fornicator!

But how could Trojans be saints, you wonder? With a time-traveling machine. Just before Troy got sacked, they escaped into the future, converted to Catholicism, and became professional killers. Of demons, of course. Which means you must be a demon.

So, to sum up: you play a demon fighting time-traveling Trojan saints with a light-saber. Now, you can all bask in the radiance of my genius.
