I believe this is being done by some other animation team...

I'm still interested in how it will turn out!

How exactly would an Animal Crossing movie work?

As I said before, Animal Crossing would work better as a TV show.  Episodic silliness involving the characters found in every town, plus a boy and a girl.  Special visitors and particular animal villagers could be the focus of a particular episode, but then they leave or move away at the end of it.

Is this going to be theatrical or a OVA (Original Video Animated)?

Yeah a TV series I could see but, a movie I couldn't see being anything but boring.

They should push animal crossing episodes to us over WiiConnect24.

A kid runs away from home because his parents don't understand him and his need to wear hats with horns. He hops aboard a train and finds himself in magical and scenic talking animal land - where there is magic! Drama! Self-discovery! Comedy! Licensed country music! Mr. Resseti! And a cool muscian/mentor figure who comes by every saturday night.

Then, an emotional reunion with parents as they come to visit animal town. Then, an emotional farewell as kid must go back to real world, after learning many valuable life lessons in animal town.

Yeah.

I believe the proper term is "leg-benders".

Have you ever seen the movie "My Neighbor Totoro"?

. . . At least that's how I see it kinda playing out. Just a bunch of whimsy.

By the way, this is a terrible idea, this movie. I can't wait to see it.
