Title: Dragon Quest
Post by: Requiem on July 03, 2006, 06:43:30 AM
I know we all saw the trailer, or at least read about, but have we actually discussed how cool this game could be?
As I understand it, the battle sequence of the game allows you to kill your opponent by "slicing" him up with your Wiimote. That's pretty cool, especially since, in an RPG, there is a lot you could do with that.
For instance, let's say you encountered some new creature you haven't encountered before. You start slicing away, thinking he's like the many other enemies you encountered. However, you quickly notice that no matter how many times you slice him, he keeps growing back his lost parts. So you observe your enemy closer, and you realize that there is a discolored spot on his chest. You quickly thrust your Wiimote forward and puncture the spot. Now the enemy growls and moans as one of his appendages turns a deep purple. As most of us would figure out, you have to slice the discolored appendage. And so starts the beginning of the end for the monster....
Now that's one example I came up with off the top of my head. I'm sure Square-Enix has better ideas and that's what gets me excited.
So what do you guys think -- Does this game have the potential to be a hit?
EDIT:
Here's the Link to the 5 second trailer. Click Here
It's so very short, but still, you can see how battling might work.

I'm assuming Toriyama has something to do with it? I'm a big fan of his Manga, Dr. Slump , but not so much whenever he does anything involving motion. I'm sort of wait and see on this but I haven't seen the trailer. I've never gotten to play any of the Dragon Quests. I hear there really good. I just can't get over that art style in motion. But when I have time I'm thinking of picking up 8 and playing it. That being said, the whole Wiimote+RPG sounds cool. (Though call me old school I still want a DS to be my FF:CC controller, they just needed to expand the stories in that game.. ah I'll stop there.) I'm going to look for the trailer if I can find it I'll link it and give more of my impressions.
Edit: Those 3 seconds look interesting. There has got to be something longer. I mean I find it look like it has promise. I was expecting to see something like this from you explanation. I'm hoping it will allow for other play styles though.

Other play stlyles?
Such as what? Magic and the sort?
Maybe at some point you can cast magic by gesturing the spell (harry potter?)? Like drawing an "S" would bring about a water-based attack.

Yeah that's what I wanted. But I wanted to take it up a notch. Eventually be able to have a party. Where 4 people could split into one of different roles. Mostly a magic user, archer, and a sword user. At that point take it to 3rd person because in theory you should know about what you want to do. Then go for it. But thinking about it that would be better serve with everyone on there own wii over lan...

Not neccessarily.
Let's say you have a 4-person party. Each person makes one move in any order you like, but after everyone has gone, it's the computers turn. You have all the time in the world to pick the order of your attack, but when you make that first attack, you have a limited amount of time to deal the most damage. I'll explain what I mean a little later.
Now, the party members have different abilities so it's important to use them right. One party member does magic, the other has a huge hammer, one has a sword, and one heals or whatever.
Now, let's say there is an enemy who has a magical shield and armor. You must first use your magic person to destroy the shield, then quickly follow up with smash hit from the hammer dude to break his armor, then stab him while he's vulnerable.
Somethin like that would be cool especially if you had to do it quickly and gesture each attack. Like you would have to gesture the spell real quick, then swing about your Wiimote to use the hammer, then thrust it forward to stab with your sword.

I think you're expecting too much from the game. If you notice, there are only two kinds of attacks shown. A perfect 90-degree vertical slash, and a perfect 90-degree horizontal slash. The Game's predecessor, Kenshin Dragon Quest, also had 45-degree diagonal slashes, so I would expect those to show up, even though they weren't shown at E3.
I'm expecting some pretty pre-rendered graphics of at least the typical core group of Dragon Quest monsters. And a gimmicky way to smack them around. And the Dragon Quest brand name on the box, available for the system's (Japanese) launch.
Anything more is going to be a bonus.

Has this game been done before?
If so, then how without the Wiimote?

Yeah. It was a standalone device you hooked up to a TV with A/V inputs, and the little plastic sword was motion-sensing, like one of those "Radica" baseball games.
