Is the beloved arcade shooter in the works?

For a company that seemed to have a great relationship with Nintendo during the GameCube's lifespan, Namco's been oddly quiet regarding the Wii. With the exception of Final Furlong, no other titles have been revealed by the company. However, that may not be the case for long, as rumblings are making their rounds on the internet that Namco may be bringing the popular Time Crisis franchise to Nintendo's next console.    


According to Spong, Namco-Bandai has three Wii games in development, including the aforementioned Final Furlong, with whispers of an RPG (presumably a Tales iteration), and an action game as well. While there's nothing official yet, the infamous gaming site claims that PR reps have been telling journalists that the action game may just be a new Time Crisis game. Spong, saying that the inclusion the famous light gun series on the console is a “distinct possibility," claims to have heard the same from several other sources, although none are listed.    


Time Crisis seems like a perfect fit for the console, with the Zapper shell for the Wii remote being similar to the light gun from the arcade game. In fact, Nintendo had a shooting demo (including a brief level based on Duck Hunt) at E3, and it didn't even need the Zapper shell. Even so, there's not much evidence to support this rumor, and the vague explanation only furthers my cynicism.  I'd love to see it happen, but until I hear something more concrete, it's safe to file this rumor under "fan-driven."

I wouldn't put much faith in this, Spong is notorious for reporting false information and stories that turn out to be wrong. I would love to see a Time Crisis game on the Wii though.

I'm not getting my hopes up but Time Crisis is pretty cool.  I wouldn't mind having it on the Wii.

My question is, why does everyone keep assuming this RPG will be derived from Tales?  Baten Kaitos is the Namco-Nintendo RPG series, but then again, that's just as much guessing as Tales.  Still, I'd consider them equally likely, if we're making presumptions.

yet for some dumb reason namcobandai decides to make a sequel to which game for gamecube?   I liked both games but i'd pick a Tales game any day of the week.

Namco didn't even publish the second Baten Kaitos game in Japan.  They have nothing to do with the series now.  And they seem determined to put Tales games on every platform known to man.  So Tales is quite likely.  Their other major current RPG series is Xenosaga but it's not as popular as Tales.

I don't mind not buying Time Crisis on Wii cuz 3rd party apps sell like ass on nintendo platforms and lots of people say nintendo needs more 3rd party apps yet those same people don't buy those 3rd party apps and you know who they are cuz they're the same people who visit the same forums you do and we can all see the DS is a Dead System as far as 3rd party apps cuz Tamagotchi is the only clear winner and only 1st party titles sell.

You say some see nintendo's cup as half empty, others say it's half full, but they all forget to note someone pissed in it.

We don't think every rumor we put up on PGC is true. We simply look at what rumors are floating around and comment on them. As you can see, we're not putting much faith into this rumor since there's hardly an evidence to support it. If it's a rumor, I see it as fair game.

I hate this assumption that all third party games are equal and therefore if you don't buy tons of third party games but ask for third party support you're a hypocrite.  Third party support is about variety and options.  The benefit of the Playstation library is that you can pick and choose whatever you want to buy or not buy.  It's not hypocritical to ask for better third party support and then not buy the ONE third party exclusive that shows up every few months because it doesn't happen to interest you.  On the Cube there were genres that were practically only represented by one game.  Not buying Tales of Symphonia doesn't mean that you don't want RPGs.  It just might mean that you don't like Tales of Symphonia.

Square Enix is releasing some Crystal Chronicles game on the Wii.  I'm not going to buy it.  That doesn't mean I don't want Square Enix support or that I don't want third party support.  I'm not buying it because the first Crystal Chronicles was crap and I'm not getting fooled twice.  Yet it's like if a third party exclusive doesn't sell third parties pull back support, never assuming that maybe their game sucked in the first place, and other Nintendo fans give you a guilt trip about not supporting third parties and such.

I'd put credence in this for one reason: lightgun games tend to sell like ass because they're a niche market AND they require buying additional hardware in order to play them properly. This is the same reason so many PS2 games were 2 player as companies didn't want to bank on players owning a multitap.

In the case of the Wii, everyone who owns one owns the necessary hardware to make use of lightgun games.

Making lightgun games for a console which already has 100% hardware saturation for your purposes is just plain common sense.

Though Spong is worthless, I'd be surprised if we didn't see lightgun games for the Wii.

I know exactly why Namco didn't announce their games at the E3 show. Anything they would of announced, be it Time Crisis or Tales, would have completely overshadowed Final Furlong.

Yeah. Sadly, as Nintendo consumers, we only have two options. We can either buy the game, or not buy the game. I'm not saying we should buy the game, a bad purchase is a bad purchase any way you cut it. It's just shocking that as consumers, we have the power to influence the market but horribly lack the ability to direct it.

It's almost like on the question of third-party quality we're powerless as Nintendo fans: we're completely dependent on Nintendo's ability to inspire and encourage third parties to make better games. Until Nintendo succeeds, as consumers we're going to be stuck in this darned 3rd-party-quality-support- catch 22. I really can't see any way out of it that we, as consumers, can initiate.

Anyone who's ever dropped $20 and two hours into Sega's Derby Owners Club horse-racing giant 8-player simultaneous arcade game would take issue with that. Horse racing and breeding games, done right, are addictive as hell.

Horse racing games are a niche genre that generally only appeals to a certian group of gamers, a Tales or Time Crisis game would appeal to more people and would be bigger news.

Yeah, that makes a great deal of sense.

Though, horse racing games are a tiny niche in the US so I can't see why they'd even bother mentioning it at E3 instead of the Tokyo game show where it would have been met with drastically more enthusiasm.

I think the Wii should be a shoe-in for lighgun games. The biggest problem this genre faces is that it requires the purchase of additional hardware in order to be played properly, sometimes VERY expensive hardware (the good lightguns can be $50+, the crappy ones which wear out and die are +/- $30).

The Wii makes these games vastly more accessible and thus more likely to sell well.

Also, on the subject of 3rd party games, games will still sell like sh*t if they suck ass. I plan to buy Red Steel and any other 3rd party games that don't, you know, suck. People buy Nintendo's games because they're known for their quality. When these 3rd parties earn the same reputation, their games will sell as well.

I could see it being addictive, sure, but that doesn't mean you can convince average Joe-GTA to try it.

Baten Kaitos 1&2 were apparently made by Tri-Crescendo (a splitoff from the frequent Enix-ally, Tri-Ace), under the directions of Monolith (a company that split from Square and joined Namco).

Tri-Crescendo is just finishing up work on Baten Kaitos 2 (which Nintendo apparently took over from Namco) and Valkyrie Profile Silmeria for Enix on the PS2. Next they're working on an Xbox360 RPG for Namco called "Trusty Bell".

Monolith is ending the Xenosaga series after #3, and yeah, they're apparently working on Disaster: Day of Crisis for the Wii next, apparently without any involvement from Namco. There are rumors saying that maybe Namco/Bandai sold whatever hold they had on Monolith to Nintendo, possibly in exchange for the chunk of Bandai that Nintendo owned, because a Nintendo rep said that one of Nintendo's second parties was making Disaster.

There are a whole bunch of "Tales" teams, but it's hard to tell which ones are working on what. Right now they're working on Tales of the Tempest for the DS, a full Tales of Destiny 1 remake for the PS2, a Tales of the World game for the PSP, a Tales of Destiny 2 port for the PSP (not to be confused with the Tales of Eternia port already on the PSP, which was called Tales of Destiny 2 in America), and a Tales of Symphonia (PSX version) port for the PSP. I'm probably missing some more.


If this rumor has any weight to it, there's nothing stopping Namco from making/hiring a new team (especially if they've lost Monolith), and/or declaring them to be yet another "Tales" team.

Maybe. It's possible that people are reading more into Namco/Monolith's Nintendo support than we should, and PR reps are a very unreliable source of info.

They supposedly worked on Chrono Trigger. And Xenogears and Chrono Cross.

And Nintendo also owns Brownie Brown, who worked on Secret of Mana and the other Seiken Densetsu games, but they've been similarly lackluster lately.

Bah, but when Magical Vacation gets here I've gonna be able to see exactly what those seiken densetsu developers have been doing lately... I'm still disappointed that Seecret of Mana was...well...was it.
