Quote “As the PlayStation 3 is a computer, we might even offer it on a built-to-order basis, customized to the needs of each and every user,” Kutaragi is quoted as saying. “The hardware components have been designed in a modularized format with this possibility in mind.”

Sony just doesn't get it....
Everyone was saying that Nintendo was about to be on its last console, I think Sony is the one more-likely headed in that direction

I've said, so many times this generation, "get a GameCube and a PC. Most of the best games on the PS2 and especially the Xbox are also available on the PC. Sony and Microsoft don't know exclusives."
The response I always get back is usually "but my PC isn't good enough" / "I prefer the ease of use of consoles".
Now that new consoles (or at least the Xbox 360 and PS3) are more expensive than decent-enough video cards, and if the PS3 becomes a custom-made upgradeable thing like PCs are, I think my argument stands even more than before.
Get a Wii and a PC, the PS3 is a joke.

This Ken Kutaragi stuff is getting so insane it's kinda funny. You can't make up stuff this bonkers. It has to be real because only a truly delusional lunatic would be able to think it up.
And I just realized that all four non-portable gaming platforms rhyme. WEE, PEESEE, Xbox THREEsixTEE, Playstation THREE. If the DS didn't exist then we would have a clean sweep with PEEsPEE.

Ohh, how 'bout we custom build a Wii into a PC. What I mean is take a PC and put the Wii inside of it, like in the DVD slot. the Wii and a PC DVD drive is about the same size.
WiiPC custom built for hardcore gamers
edit: Ian what about DEEs?

Like I said, it's a conspiracy! Some uber-company that owns both Nintendo and Sony have decided that it's Sony's turn to take the fall. So to kill the PS2's momentum they have people like Kutaragi say the craziest things about the PS3.
How else would you explain their track record so far? Makes you wonder if the people that work on the PS3 aren't actually gamers so they really have no idea what gamers want and expect.

Just about every other piece of information they gave at the Sony conference contradicted itself:
Sony is not about gimm!cks!...followed by showing the use of the PSP as a rear view mirror for Riiiiidge Racer!
This game is intended to capture the realistic battles which actually happened in feudal China...so you'll have to attack this giant enemy crab for MASSIVE damage!
Sony is all about innovation...which is why we ripped off motion control from Nintendo's controller!
It was like a huge, laughing joke. Had Nintendo given a conference like this, I would have cancelled any and all plans to buy a Wii and renounced their products forever.

"Ian what about DEEs?"
Doesn't rhyme. Though if you were doing a rap you could say "S to the D" which not only would allow it to rhyme but would also make you sound all gangsta and some sh!t, yo. Word.

“In the 20 years I’ve worked in the gaming industry, I have never seen so many titles in the playable phase,” he said. “The world has obviously underestimated our progress in software development. It’s likely that many shook their heads in disbelief at seeing the large number of titles actually working before their eyes.”
Your progress, or the progress of third parties? Oh, and I don't know about you, Ken... but I think Nintendo having TWENTY SEVEN games working and playable kinda dwarfs your 10. Werd.
EDIT: What a nutjob.

Griffin: Perhaps he doesn't see Nintendo or Microsoft as competitors anymore. They are nonexistant entities...so yeah, 10 playable games is amazing progress for this hardware, that supposedly is 10 years ahead of its time, and is actually a customizable super computer from Venus.

Surprisingly, I've never really read Sony's claims on any of their systems until recently... some of the things they say really make me want to punch myself in the head in order to get them out of there.

But how would that work?
How would launch work with that?
Would you have to place an order 6 months before launch date and then hope the unit you ordered doesn't get mixed up between Sony HQ and the shop. Then when it does wait another month for them to find it and another for them to finally get it to you.
Then when you finally get it home, unpacked and plugged in, then realise that it overheats or falls apart in the first load up. Then putting it all back together and sending it back for repair/rebuild, Then the vicious cycle starts again.
(okay i think i went a bit overboard there but thats alright, you get the picture)
I would also imagine that that would remove the impulse buy altogether. You would ask for one at the counter only to be told to fill out an order form and wait 6 months for it to arrive and beginning the above cycle.

Probably the option to buy a default store PS3 or have a customized one.

Chances are, retailers will sell the two systems already announced, and you'll need to fill an order at the sony site online in order to get a custom built one.
Thank god I'm not dumb enough to do either.

This will never come to fruitation.
All this is, is an attempt to get media.
Right now, Microsoft is getting media and press by talking about the 360 and throwing props to Nintendo. This makes Microsoft seem like a pretty descent company, and MS feels Nintendo really isn't competition this round anyway.
Nintendo is getting press from Microsoft and small little Wii announcements that everyone is eating up because the press believes the Wii truly is Nintendo's second coming.
This leaves Sony with nothing. No news, no announcements, no game information. And to top it off, most people believe the PS3 E3 showing was bland and completely uneventful. This is bad, bad news for Sony.
So, why not announce big statements that try and talk your system even to bigger, badder, more awesome system than the rest. Surely only your system is a strong capable computer. Only your system can Linux properly. Only your system could be considered a computer. Only your system is veratile enough to be customizable internally for some unexplained reason.
This is really a sad attempt at press coverage and it isn't working...and actually confusing the people that are paying attention.

Spak-Spang has it right. This is just nonsense that is being spouted for pure publicity. It gets people talking about the PS3 again because it didn't build any hype or good word of mouth at E3 and beyond.

it is pretty obvious Sony is an attention w...
and also, this will make the games worse, as they'll have to be made for the lowest common denominator (that is, playable for the worst configuration)
they're messing up REALLY bad here....

They'll be made for the standard version. If Sony offers PS3s with weaker configs those won't play games and if they upgrade the PS3 beyond that the additional power will go to waste.

Sony does this.
They lied their heads off about what the PS2 could do and yet none of those lies seemed to hurt their PS2 sales one bit.
They even invented a movie critic to give rave reviews about their crappy movies, yet they only received a slap on the wrist for that.
Sony is living proof that deception works and I'll be overjoyed if they go down in flames this gen.
Not that I think MS is any better, mind you, but MS at least keeps their lies grounded in reality whereas Sony is pulling stuff straight out of their rear-orifices.

Quote They even invented a movie critic to give rave reviews about their crappy movies, yet they only received a slap on the wrist for that.
In Sony's defense, A Knight's Tale was highly underrated. I didn't even request the refund Sony owes me for going to see the thing.
Anyway. What were we talking about? Playstations being custom built to order? My prediction is that this'll be used even less than the ps2 harddrive.
AS SB and others have said, these statements (and features, if they ever come to fruition) won't really hurt Sony. The one thing they have against them is price...and, if iPods are any indication, we may be underestimating what the average consumer is willing to spend...

I think the reason behind this apparent Sony madness has been revealed.
I guess they were trying to get PS2 classified as a computer too(for tax rebates) but failed miserably, now is thier second chance with PS3.
Quote Sony's PlayStation 2 is officially a games console and not a computer, according to an English court judgment that denies the electronics firm a €50m (£34.2m/$62.9m) rebate for import duties.
Sony has been pursuing legal action for five years in attempts to have the machine classified as a "digital processing unit" and not a games console. Games machines attracted an EU import duty of 1.7 per cent in 2001, falling year by year to zero by 2004; but computers attracted no duty in that time.

*shrug* Personally if it doesn't run a version of an Office Type Suite, has a keyboard for it's primary input, and a way to manage it from an administrative side then I wouldn't consider it a computer. But Webster says: general-purpose computer equipped with a microprocessor and designed to run especially commercial software (as a word processor or World Wide Web browser) for an individual user. That's a personal computer which would be the class they fall in. It's to specialized for that and everyone knows it. Though that does make somethings clearer now.
