Title: Are you camping out?
Post by: Nick DiMola on May 29, 2006, 03:25:57 AM
I was just reading the mailbag and one of the questions was on preordering the Wii. Are you guys more likely to preorder or camp out? Personally, I think camping out is the only way to purchase a game console. I camped out at the local walmart for the Cube and at 1am in the morning I was enjoying the next generation.

Question 2: What games are a definite purchase at launch?

I am going with LoZ, MP:3, Excite Truck(if it's there), Wii Sports, Madden Wii(First Madden Purchase Since '94 on the SNES), and possibly Rayman.

I'm going to pre-order and get it ASAP. Hopefully the PS3 launch is on the same night so I can play my DS in the Wii line while making fun of the people in the PS3 line playing PSP and there'll be riots!

I haven't camped out before, but I may for this launch. It all depends on if a friend/friends will camp out too, it's no fun unless you have friends to do it with you.

I won't preorder, I won't camp out, I'll just walk into a store and buy one. Could have done that with an XBox 360.

I'll just need to have it before Christmas to meet family tradition.

I'll probably preorder one - my camping days are long over.

It all depends on supply and demand.  I plan to zip past the nearest Superstore to see if there is any lineup around midnight (doubtful) and if need be, yeah, I might.

Preorder...my concern is that if the machine is popular enough, a preorder may not mean anything.  Though I guess if you preorder day 1, it would work.  The other problem is icky bundles.  If they'll offer me one without a bundle (or with a bundle I don't hate) then maybe...

Really, though, I imagine it will be possible to walk in and buy one in any "non-gamer" store until noon, at least.

It's not about availability for me, and there's no chance of it selling out in my area. I just want to feel the hype! Plus I want it so much i'll have it the first second I can get it. Why wait a whole 12 hours?

Let's see... Pre-order online, and get it shipped to me... Or camp out on a hard sidewalk in the cold fall weather of New England...

Hard choice.

I made my choice a little while ago. When the Cube came out I was barely in the 10th grade or so, and living in South L.A. theres no way I was  going to camp out. But now, im going to sit infront of some store all night long with my DS hoping that Mario Kart players will help me pass the night away. I really want the Wii, and I know no matter what im getting one,  but im in it mostly for the experience.

It's all about the Wal-Mart Supercenters, they are open all night. Start hanging out at aroun 8 or 9 and just play some DS with other campers, sure to be a good time.

I hope to preorder online, or go to my local walmart/bestbuy. I've used to living in a rural area where the supply is ample, but I live in Toronto now so I'll have to reevaluate.

Camping most likely.  I'll have to see how supply looks of course, but I tend to search hard for stores breaking the date or opening early.  When it comes to hardware launches, I've always found my console someplace other than where I would have preordered.  I may preorder as back up if I think I need to, just because I'll have reviews to take care of right away.

Depends on my Wally Mart roommate and if he can secure one for us on launch.  If not, I'll just wait until he can get one as it'll be 10% cheaper.

I remember being second in line waiting for the GameCube at Future Shop.  Even though I pre-ordered it, I still wanted to be there early.  The only person in front of me, and the only other person for a while, was a mom waiting to get one for her kids and husband.  As Future Shop's opening time approached, more people finally did start lining up.  Then my dad, who had been driving around, spazzed about how Zellers was already open, with several GameCubes available, and no line-up.  We went there to pick it up, and cancelled my Future Shop pre-order shortly after.  I don't think anyone really lines up for anything in Edmonton.

So what you guys might consider is that places like Zellers (what's the American equivalent?  Target?) and Superstore might have no lines or much shorter lines than places that do deal specifically with electronics, games, or tech, like Future Shop, Best Buy, EB Games or whatever.

I'd consider pre-ordering when they start advertising pre-orders in flyers.  They will probably have bonuses like at least a T-shirt or something, and I'll feel more comfortable that they'd actually be holding on to the pre-order if it was an official campaign.

I plan to pre-order as soon as it becomes an option.  Doing so should assure me one.  I know there are people who enjoy camping out, but I'm not into that sort of thing.

Oh I'm camping out for sure. Did it with the Gamecube, and I will do so again with the Wii... just hopefully the store has a better stock of games. When I camped for the Gamecube, the first five people ended up buying all of the Rogue Squadrons...

If it's all nighter, be sure a lot of mocking commences when their PSP's run out of juice.

I can't remember, did Superstore have the midnight thing for the 'Cube? Because I know it usually closes at 9 or 10..

I've never camped for anything but for the sake of camping, and I never will.
I'll preorder it, or just buy it sometime.

I would like to pre-order, but I HATE the bundles of crap and excessive expense that the major retailers force down your throats.  I was just looking at getting a DS lite, but the only thing at EB and gamestop are 200 bundles.  F that, I did find a preorder on Amazon through Toys R Us, that will be my trail run for my Wii preorder.

The couple of things I've preordered in the last few years were my Gamecube, GBA, DS and PSP (yes, I know, bad call - world's most expensive MP3 player...). I got these from Game and Gamestation in the UK. I didn't get a bundle forced on me for any of them, although I did go for a bundle with the GC because they offered games I wanted anyway. I'm not expecting to get screwed on the bundle from with the Wii because I just can't see demand in the UK being that high - people over here seem to be largly Sony and Microsoft's bitches :-(

I'm pre-ordering. Shouldn't be too much of a problem down here.
I got my DS with no pre-order and no problems on launch day, same with the cube.
But in this post-Katrina society, I just don't know.

Think I'll wait for the first price drop, then camp out.

I dont know if I sould camp out or pay a homeless guy to do it for me, maybe since I can't per-order it, store are waiting till they know how many their getting since they dont want people waiting half a year after launch till per-orders get their like the 360, I just should show up with a shotgun as my "per-order" and cut in line.

i'll most likely just pre-order somewhere that more than likely not try and sell me a bundle, but if the Nintendo World Store wants to have a midnight Wii release then i'll be hanging outside of those doors all day

IceCold: I don't recall anyone doing midnight launches here, but I imagine you might find a store somewhere that would do it... I wouldn't be surprised if the decision can be made store-by-store.

I don't think I've been to a midnight launch or midnight showing or midnight anything before.

Sounds like it could be fun, maybe I should do at least one in my life, but to me it seems more worth it to get a good night's sleep, then get it first thing in the morning.  Perceived time would still be the same (unless I can't sleep from excitement), so to me it's not any sooner, and whatever it is I'd be getting I could use all day without being concerned that I should probably get some sleep.

Though I guess it depends on if the point of camping out for a midnight release is just to get it ASAP, or if it's to bask in the excitement of its release with other fans and make new friends with a similar interest.

I don't understand why the "midnight releases" or "midnight showings" I've seen are at 12:01.  If you're surrounded by rabid fans who obviously don't want to wait, why not open at 12:00?  When midnight hits, it's already the next day...

Hopefully I can waltz right into Wal-Mart at 8AM and grab one problem-free like I did with the Cube on it's launch day. But otherwise no, I won't be camping out.

Preorder and then have trouble sleeping the eve of the release.

Talking about preorders, it The Magic Box is reporting that Japanese stores are already taking pre-orders, most of them are expecting a 1800 yen or $160 US price point.

Anyone know of any UK outlets taking preorders yet? Or any reliable importers?
