Title: Moore praise from Moore
Post by: Aussiedude on May 25, 2006, 03:39:44 AM
On his possibly purchasing a Wii from Nintendo later this year:

"Well I hope my friend Reggie [Fils-Aime] sends me one, I don't know. [laughs] Look I was there when Iwata-san pulled out that thing. I was there in the front row in Tokyo... and I said [to myself] "You've got to give 'em kudos for trying." And I'm literally going to go over there tomorrow and try to find Reggie or find Perrin [Kaplan] and I think Mario's the game... if you've got to play one game it's Mario. I'm sure I'll get one. Right now I'm trying to get my Brain Age down [laughs]. Look, it's not partisan; I love what Nintendo is doing. They're in a different space... and there's this view now that you buy a 360 for Halo, Grand Theft Auto, Gears of War, all the other stuff we got going, and if you want Metroid, you want Zelda, you want Mario, you go get a Wii. And you put the two together and it's probably the same price as the PS3."

Sounds funny but he's probably right.

Also doesn't hurt that Nintendo is the biggest threat to Sony in Japan (Since MS can't have it I guess he's hoping Ninty will take it)

True. If Nintendo dominates Japan, and MS dominates (over Sony) in the US, it works very nicely for Microsoft, since Europe is Sony's domain (according to PS3 polls I've seen in EU). This way, everyone gets to be a market leader.

Microsoft is hoping Nintendo will take enough of it to weaken Sony.  Then Microsoft just has one tiny little toy company to crush.

If Sony, Sega, and every other gaming company couldn't crush Ninty, I won't worry about MS.

I wouldn't worry.....wouldn't....

It is a strange time to be a Nintendo enthusiast. Everything in the realm of gaming has now been flipped on its head. It's the twilight zone.

......and I couldn't be happier

Moore is just worried about the next generation.  He's been through one failed console already (Dreamcast).  If Xbox 360 doesn't make a boatload of money, investors are going to pull the plug and put Moore out of a job.  But if he makes nice with Nintendo now, maybe they'll hire him in 2010.  (His office would just move down the street--no biggie.)

I think with all of Sony's screwups it'll be really hard for the 360 to fail

You know, nobody has been able to stop Nintendo so far, but the company ain't invincible.  And when the competition is made up of these giant corporations, it means that business becomes even more risky.  Until the past few months, when Wii started to take shape, I was seriously concerned that this could be Nintendo's last home console.  Now I'm pretty confident that Nintendo is going to earn back some of the marketshare it lost in the past three generations.

Of course, there's also some question of whether MS wants to beat Nintendo at all.  I think right now, looking at Moore's perspective on Nintendo, MS is thinking, "Okay, these guys have a cool idea, but they aren't really competing for the same territory as us."  MS figures a lot of people will buy both, Wii for motion gameplay, and Xbox 360 or PS3 for graphics.  MS wants to be the graphics console instead of PS3 - that's their market.  Furthermore, Microsoft is always looking for ways to bring Sony down.  Sony has the momentum, and Microsoft wants to turn that around.  Hence Microsoft employees endorsing DS over PSP, and now Wii as a companion to Xbox 360.

But what if Wii takes first place?  What if it costs MS potential marketshare?  Then Microsoft's attitude will change, and I imagine you'll see MS taking steps to compete with Wii, mark my words.

Just PR nonsense, but it's still nice to hear him say it.  Has a ring of truth to it, maybe.

By the time MS would see that happening it would already be too late. The damage is already done an it would be too hard to stop the momentum. The best MS could do is hope slow them down or *attach themselves.

*If Nintendo is to be an iPod, then MS would want to be an iMac, metaphorically speaking.

p.s. just a thought, wwhat if Wii could access the harddrives of the PS3 or 360 through the usb ports? That would also support the push for multi-console ownership for Wii centric buyers.
