Hahaha, those were awesome. Although I must say, I thought Zhen Yu Li's entry surpassed Dan's (both were good, Zhen Yu Li's was just so much more ridiculous and awesome). I'll post mine later today, when I have it on me.

Ha! Good stuff, Dan's got some smooth moves there. Congratulations to you! Also, I like the last-minute wrinkle of using the DS as a morse code signal in Zhen's.
Here's mine - In line with Nintendo's non-gamer strategy, ahem, I tried to use references from a broad range of sources: kung fu movies, the bible, pharmaceutical commercials/infomercials, and a Hitchcock flick, in addition to video games. I may not have reinforced them enough, though (especially the "Rear Window"/Jimmy Stewart one)
Title: Techniques for avoiding the wrath and/or blade of a fearsome and dangerous Belligerent Ninja during a Belligerent Ninja Attack (BNA).
Although infrequent, Belligerent Ninja Attacks DO occur, and unfortunately, survival probability approaches "none." The following tactics may raise your chances to "slim" or higher!
Note: Three elements combine to increase BNA risk: • nightfall • deserted alley • DSL
Techniques:
"David" – Using wrist strap, spin DSL like a sling and release aimed at Belligerent Ninja's noggin.
"Tracy" – It's said, "Music soothes the savage Belligerent Ninja." Play Electroplankton until Belligerent Ninja "chills."
"Jimmy" – Back away while opening/closing DSL at irregular intervals. The strobe effect should blind Belligerent Ninja, allowing escape. Stammering incomprehensibly increases effectiveness.
With these techniques, YOU can survive a BNA. Good luck!

I really liked Dan's entry reminded me of something Film Noir, kind of like Max Payne or Sin City. I see him sitting there in black and white and the girl comes over and the DSLite is the only thing in color when he busts it open. The color from the DS goes black and white when he makes the comment about the girls eyes and then her eyes flash color.
Nice entry Dan enjoy your DSL!

I like Dan's. Good economic writing.
Here's mine.
Subject: Main Use for the DS Lite (what gaming devices are really used for)
Body:
Popularity. Think about it. You're sitting there alone in Starbucks, kicking back a Coffee Grande, with all the college girls talking to only the emo dudes who are proclaiming their absolute immasculenity, and then you are like "Hey, baby, check this out," and then you pull out your DS Lite from your leather pants, open it up, and the Nintendogs start barking. They all fall in love. Evil/emo loses. You go home with the girls. Please make this me 8-)

Nate C.'s should have won, out of those three.
"The fool thought the sun had come out! Afterwards Simon put an order in from Lik-Sang."
Friggin' AWESOME!
The first two are just "Meh". The first one just reeks of geeky desperation and the second, while much funnier, still doesn't outdo the 3rd. The line about Simon ordering from Lik-Sang alone was worth it.

Quote The first one just reeks of geeky desperation
Yeah, I think the first one was odd in a bad way. Also, have you notice that it didn't really focus on using the DS? It seems more like a weird fantasy/pick-up lines with the DS shoved in at the last minute. Isn't the focus of the contest about creative ways to use the DS? I feel like Dan's entry completely missed the point of the contest.
I thought the other 2 were much better. Zhen's really focused on using the DS in multiples ways. Every bit of it was about how to use the DS. Nate's doesn't use it that much, but it was the funniest. Yeah, the Dracula line also cracked me up.
Me, I'd toss a coin on Zhen and Nate's entry to decide the winner.

The more I read it, the less I like it. It's like one of those horribly cliched male fantasies you expect to see in bad porno movies and it's actually degrading women by suggesting that all it would take to pick one up would be a somewhat fancy trinket.
It would have had just as much credibility as suggesting she'd say, "Nice toy. Wanna f*ck?"

In all honesty, this looks like PGC wasn't even paying attention to the other entries and just picked the one that made them laugh the most...
I agree the third entry should've won. It was extremely creative and it's a GREAT throwback to a classic franchise that celebrates everything Nintendo.
I just don't get it...
Title: RE: DS Lite Contest Winner
Post by: Terranigma Freak on May 24, 2006, 12:33:43 PM
To me, the biggest problem is that PGC themselves missed the point of their own contest. It clearly states: "the reader who could come up with the best alternative use for the new handheld." Dan's entry really has nothing to do with alternative use. It's like a beauty contest where the judges just picked the girl with the biggest rack and forget about everything else.
Quote just picked the one that made them laugh the most...
I think that's completely untrue. Dan's entry wasn't funny at all. Nate C's entry probably should have won if you go by which is the funniest.
Hey, PGC guys, you plan on making a similar contest for the Wii? I doubt we'll be able to keep it family friendly though.

I'm sorry that you guys disagree, but as I read hundreds of entries, Dan's was the one that seemed most interesting and humorous to me. Zhen and Nate's entries were great as well, but in the end, I just liked Dan's better. You can't please everyone, I guess, but can you all at least be happy for the winner getting a new DS Lite?
Title: RE: DS Lite Contest Winner
Post by: Hostile Creation on May 24, 2006, 01:25:09 PM
Dan's entry is totally valid. Not my favorite, but definitely an alternate use. The runner-up is much funnier than Nate's, in my opinion. Nate's is good, but the Dracula part is the only funny part, and that's a bit. . . obvious. As for Zhen, the castinent is funny, using it as a lighthouse and military morse code. It's so complex and dumb, I love it.
Anyway, I'll post mine now:
"One if by land, two if by sea. Famous words from America's Revolutionary War, the number of lanterns to warn how the British were approaching. But that can't be fun, just holding a lantern all night. So propose sending a DS Lite back in time, to help out our patriot forebears. They'll be entertained, and with the DS Lite's incredibly bright screens, no doubt the sign would be seen across the land. If they're coming by land? They play a Gameboy Advance game. If by sea, a match of Mario Kart. E Pluribus Unum. Game on."
First idea that occurred to me. No idea why :P

Not that it's wrong, but that we disagree.
Sounds pretty unanimous, too, but it doesn't really matter as it's all said and done now. I just would have picked either 2 or 3 instead of 1.
I mean, in 1, replace "DS Lite" with "PSP" and you have roughly the same thing.
I think that a Nintendog reference would have been a must for any pickup scenario.

Nah, nobody's blaming you or anything. Besides, isn't it a group thing where the staff of PGC all voted on it? I doubt you're the only one who decided the winner. I really am curious as to how close the other 2 entries got being the winner. Did Dan win by a landslide or just barely beat the other 2?

I really don't like the winner's, I think it's pretty lame that it won. Good job guys >=U
It was hard to come up with something that wasn't "obvious" (like, for instance, lighting up a lighthouse....but Li's still had a lot of originality in it =D His was the best out of those three) so I gave up trying to come up with something GOOD, and just tried to come up with something that included EVERY improved aspect of the DSL. Here's mine (which I had to shorten by like a half to get it to fit the limit...I'm still al ittle over, but whatever):
Women are more likely to be made fun of when seen with a gaming system. The DSLite protects me from this by fitting into my purse, out of sight. When seen it is referred to as my “make-up case” due to its compact design. Using the DSLite’s extended battery I am able to keep it in sleep mode all day in my purse, so I can use it for protection on my dangerous walk home at night. Quickly opening it on its brightest setting into a predator’s eyes will instantly paralyze him, giving me time to jab him with the huge stylus.
I included: smaller system, compact design, extended battery, brighter screen, and larger stylus. That's pretty much everything improved on the DSLite :P It's not the best written piece out there, but I thought including all that would score me some points >_>
PS I'm not a girl =OOO

interesting, although I do like the runner-ups a lot more, a lot funnier and such
my idea came from a friend, who I congratulated because he finally changed his brick-sized cellphone for a better one... and I also had to shorten it a lot....
Nintendo announces an alternate meaning of DSLite
May 10, 2006. Nintendo Co., Ltd is pleased to begin the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), by announcing an alternate meaning and functionality of DSLite(TM).
Since the DSLite(TM) is so small and portable, it can't be used in the same self-defense manner as other portables like the Game Boy(R) Classic or Atari(R) Lynx, that is, either throwing or hitting with it, damaging the unit as well.
Introducing: the Defense and Self-protect Light. Odd name, yet descriptive, since the light in both screen is so bright, what better way to defense oneself than to leave your attacker blind!
"My ass-kicking and name-taking abilities have dramatically improved!" declares Reginald Fils-Aime.
DSLite(TM) is in stores now.
.....I just realized it's the same idea as KN's :S....

Here's mine. I thought it was possible that it actually had a chance.
Title: How to use a DSLite to successfully rob a bank.
- Draw a face in PictoChat and tape it to your own face as a disguise.
- Use the charging cord to tie up the guard.
- When driving away, set the DS to its brightest setting. Cause seizures to the officers in pursuit by holding it to the back window and quickly opening and closing it.
- Drive around McDonald’s - use the WiFi and Mic to communicate with your waiting helicopter crew - it’s harder to trace than Cell Phone calls.
- As a last resort, throw it out the window. When trailing vehicles hit the sharp edges, their tires will go flat.

i'm not that fond of the winning entry..it's just uninspired nor original or funny but has some sleek writing. zhens' is quite better showcasing some more creative thought into it.
here is mine: which i still think is the winner ;P
Use DS as trap- at night you turn on the DS with great bright light and put it on the ground, then you take the stylus and put through the wrist-strap. Now start folding the screen down a bit and stand the stylus in-between until the stylus stops them from closing and TaDa! You have a pro's trapping device. Now all you need is to do is wait for some small animal to go in for a suntan, or a big animal to use it's tail to clean the screens from the dust and WHAM pull wrist-strap! Your prime hunter!
preorderd my ds lie right after i found out i didint win, so as long as i get my hands on a dslite i dont mind.

I refuse to jump onto the hate-the-winning-entry bandwagon. I enjoyed the winner's entry, and the runners up. And also all the ones that have been posted on the forum. So there.
...My personal favorite, though, is probably Uncle Bob's.
At this point, I'd post my own entry...if I had sent one in. I had an idea for using it as a torture/interrogation device. Decided against it, though.

There's no bandwagon here to jump on. Heck, even if we raid PGC's HQ to force them to change the winner, it won't benefit any of us here. I couldn't even get mine in on time...
Ok look, I'll be honest, I also had the idea of using the DS as a chick magnet, but I thought it was too stupid so I didn't send it in. Had I known it would have gotten such high praise, I would have sent mine in as well.
Hey, why don't we do a little vote here just for fun? Let's vote the winner and see what the readers like. The winner will get... nothing.

This was my entry guys: The DS Lite: Remote control for Reggie Fils-Aime The DS Lite is an excellent handheld. What few people know, however, is that it can connect to Reggie Fils-Aime’s brain! When a secret button code is entered into the DS Lite, it becomes a remote control for Reggie Fils-Aime!
Harness the power of the Regginator! Press “A” to kick a butt, “B” to take a name, and “X” or "Y" to Regginate Reggie's current target! Then, use the touch screen and mic to deliver powerful competition-crushing speeches! But be careful: Reggie might break free and come to Regginate YOU!
Here was the concept behind it: I kept thinking of an alternative use for the DS Lite. But then I kept thinking that I should've created something COMPLETELY unexpected. Instead of focusing on obvious stuff like the light, I came up with an alternative use for the OVERALL handheld.
I had a lot of ideas for this. I originally started as the DS Lite as a gateway to other dimensions. Why challenge gamers and friends locally when you can do it dimensionally? Then I came up with the idea of using the DS Lite as a way to enter someone's mind and see what they see and hear what they hear. Eventually, I came up with the idea of controlling the ultimate Nintendo icon, Reggie Fils Aime.
My pet peeve is that the contest encouraged creative thinking. The winning entry isn't that creative or imaginative. It's just a lame pick up line involving the DS Lite. Like SB said, replace it with the PSP, the GBA or even the original GB and you still have the same thing. It didn't capture why the DS Lite is so great and fantastical.
The third entry was MUCH better. I'm sorry Karl, but it seemed that you were pressed for time and picked the one you could remember the most. The entry is not interesting, the entry is not FANTASTIC.
I'm sorry Karl, but you dropped the BALL on this one...

I think there's a lot of weight put to the style of writing. Dan's is well-written, with a lot of mood and confidence. We should know by now that (especially with the way it applies to video games) presentation/style is everything.
Honestly, it's what I was counting on for my entry too – my uses weren't overly-original (I did the blinding and weapon uses too). However, when placed into the very specific setting of a guide written to help the reader fend off random Ninja attacks, and referencing (what I'd hoped were) well-known events/movies/etc... well, I'd hoped it would be better-received. It wasn't, so that's too bad for me. But it's good for Dan. And it would have been good for someone else if it wasn't Dan.
A "reader's choice" vote will get us nothing but ill-will and riled emotions. PGC didn't have to put the contest up in the first place, and none of us would even have had the CHANCE of winning a DS Lite. It was super-nice of them to spend the time and effort for this, and I think they're taking too much crap for this service they've provided to the readers.
I DO have a couple suggestions that could reduce some of the whinging in future contests, though: • Make sure there are at least small prizes for 2nd and 3rd place, like there usually are (heck, even just leftover E3 swag). Just one prize for all those quality entries is a major disappointment to the people who were SO close. • If it's NOT a committee vote by all or most of the staff, it should be. (even if it's first culled down to a "TOP 10" list).
Actually, I will vote: I vote that we let these complaints die and just be content that we had a chance to win at all, thanks to PGC (especially Karl). If you've got something constructive to say, then fine. For me, it's a done-deal. I enjoyed the entries that got the honors, and am hoping lots more entrants post their submissions.

Here's the thing, though. The contest didn't encourage the best writing possible. They only wanted the BEST IDEA FOR THE DS LITE. They said that while good writing and being funny didn't hurt, they were looking for ideas, not for the best writing.
This contest was NOT about the presentation or the style. IT WAS ABOUT THE IDEA! And the winner's idea was lame. Lame, lame, lame...
In fact, this is so bad that I might not enter any future PGC contest if they will be using the same half assed method of entry judgement...

Hah, how about I get one for myself first?
Pap, I'm sorry that you don't like the entries and I hope that you enter in future contests, but the fact of that matter is, I was tasked to find what was, in my eyes, the best entry. I say "in my eyes," because being "the best" is subjective. As such, there are going to be people (such as yourself) who disagree. One of the conditions of the contest is that the final decision is left to the judge, and this is no different. I don't mean to sound arrogant, but deciding the winner was my decision (along with the approval of the Senior Staff), and it stays, regardless of what your problems with it are.
This is the end of the conversation. You're all free to post your own entries and discuss what you liked or disliked about the winners, but as far as belittling the validity of the final decision, it won't go any further. I'm trying to take your statements in stride, but there are mods on this board with less paitience than I.

I wouldn't go that far. These contests are ALL subjective, and while I like all of the others posted here (yours is great: REGGINATED!!! Ha!) Karl has a different set of standards for what he dubs "best".
Besides, this WAS an easy competition to enter so I'm sure it had tons of entries. The harder ones will have fewer participants.
