Title: Myst mmo making a comeback
Post by: wandering on May 18, 2006, 09:54:58 PM
I doubt that many of you care... but since it failed last time because of lack of interest, I thought I might try to, you know, drum up some interest.

Why be excited about a Myst mmo? I think tycho from Penny Arcade summed it up best...

They're saying that there really wasn't the subscriber interest to support it, and while I find that sort of depressing it wouldn't surprise me in the least. The whole thing was really high concept, placed high demands on their technology, and had somewhat ethereal elements to it. I've heard Uru Live's functionality referred to as a sort of "chat room," which is a claim so ridiculous that I hardly know how to characterize it. My vocabulary is an arsenal, and I can't produce a comparable understatement.

When I said ethereal elements, this is what I meant - that's the homepage of the "D'ni Restoration Council," the bureaucracy in the game that is preparing the ages (puzzle worlds) for travellers (i.e., players). Look at the front page, I mean, there's a character saying that Uru Live is canceled in story appropriate language.

So, yeah. They're parterning with GameTap, and it'll be out this fall Hopefully they won't cancel it before the official launch this time. And hopefully there'll be a mac version.

I think this is doomed to fail. You'll always run into some jerk who has read gamefaqs and is spamming the solution to the nearest puzzle.

I dunno. The beta test was apparently pretty jerk free.

Also, apparently, everyone role-played (because role-playing was so easy...all you had to do was pretend what was going on the game was real.)

But perhaps that'll change once the game is offered for free with a service that lets you play sonic and Tomb Raider.
