Title: HUGE swing to the Wii from the gamer community
Post by: Dryden on May 11, 2006, 11:13:19 PM
Take a look here for the poll at gamefaqs a few days ago:  "Which system do you think will have the best showing at E3"

Then look here for the poll for May 12th: "Which system's games most impressed you at E3 this year?"

Wii went from 35% approval to a full 61% (yes, in slightly different polls, but still).  PS3 from 39% to 23%...  Wii's hype machine is in overdrive.  And the PS3 has amazing stuff on the floor, they're no pushover.  (LucasArts two tech demos are truly next-gen... Nintendo won't have that on their consoles for at least five years)...

And that's from the hardcore gamefaqs gamer community.  Few lapsed gamers, few casual gamers, and no non-gamers there.

With all the support from the fans... is Nintendo finally coming into a position of console market domination?

--Edit: Those numbers will change as the poll continues--

You think that's good, check this out.

From a Japanese site, which i'm told is basically the Japanese version of 1up / EGM. I think a large part of this swing is that Sony dropped the ball, but Nintendos was great too. Sony basically opened the door and Nintendo walked through it. What's really interesting about that poll is that MICROSOFT is ahead of Sony in a Japanese poll.

However, the biggest hurdle is yet to be crossed. The mainstream media. There was a TV special here about E3, and Nintendo wasn't even mentioned, but they spent 20 minutes talking abuot PS3. This crap has to stop soon, I have no idea how Sony does this, but its bullsh*t. If PS3 can survive this and still come out with a distant lead then the industry is basically screwed.

Oh, two more polls worth looking at:
Do You Plan to buy a Wii (pre-E3 showing)
What Do You Think of the Wii now?  (Post E3 Showing)

They went from 34% of the gamefaqs market being uninterested to under 19%.  I think that classifies as a gaming revolution.

Well I personally don't have much respect for the gamefaq community, they are basically a bunch of Halokids who seem about as mature as a 10 year old (probaly most are 10), but this is indeed promising none the less. If Nintendo can catch the interest of gamefaq people who have usually been anti-NIntendo then the future looks bright.

I don't think Gamefaqs is anti-Nintendo at all.  They're actually a pretty honest description of the English-speaking market.  The move towards Wii is promising no matter how you look at it, though.

I hope that this creates a halo effect when the Wii is released.

I mean, it's awesome that the once jaded gaming community is accepting the Wii, but the real challenge will be the casual and non gamers. If the hardcore gamers are so impressed they will tell people about it and word about how great the Wii is will spread like wildfire.

my cynical opinion is that it is as simple as Sony and MS, being big corperations that do more than just games, spend more on advertising, and therefor get more attention from the "msm" (main stream media).

I think we've seen Nintendo being very clever at being able to maneuver around this.  The name Wii, was an example of generating a huge amount of buzz for free.  The trend setting wiimote and nunchuck are others.

Panasonic was in the same boat. Philips advertised the shit out of the CD-i. If people don't want something, no amount of money thrown at the MSM for coverage is going to change things.

It's not that the PS3 is uninteresting, it's that it's unaffordable.

I don't really trust online polls, maybe Nintendo fans are just spreading through the web to stamp their opinion everywhere.  Even so, this is encouraging.

It is a pretty honest sampling of the market, except Microsoft is underrepresented on the site.

I made it to E3 yesterday from 9am to 2pm.  I should've been prepared.  I went to the Nintendo booth thinking, I can always get in line later for the huge Wii booth.  I was wrong.  When I came back to the booth at 10am, the line was already wrapped around Nintendo's entire booth.  To my dismay, I never got to touch the Wii at all because I didn't stand in line when the doors opened.

I should also add that when the doors open at 9am, I've never seen so many grown men, who weren't athletes, take off in a sprint to just one booth.

I played a lot of DS, PS3, XBOX 360, PS2...but I didn't get to touch the Wii.

So back on topic:  From this unfortunate experience...the Wii definitely had the edge yesterday.  Despite a very impressive showing from XBOX 360 and PS3, which were both amazing, the Wii dominated...Nintendo wins.

Hey cubist, I was just reading the same thing on Nintendorks...the line is supposedly 3-4 hours long, with 1500-2000 people in it.  Sony's PS3 line is supposedly 30 minutes long by comparison.  Nintendo even had to put guys at the end of the line to turn people away starting at 3PM.

Video of the line for those of us who don't get to see it firsthand.

You know, I wasn't going to bother reserving a Wii, but I'm starting to reconsider that.

Fixed link way after the fact.

Holy f*ck is that a long line!  I swear if you took a whole day at Disneyland and combined all of the lines you wait in together it would be smaller.

I assume that once you're at the front of the line you get to try out all the games?  It would suck ass to have get back in line every time.  "Okay looks like I get two impression write ups done per day.  At this rate E3 better last for a month or I'm screwed."

The media here is still getting it wrong. Page 2 of Metro blatantly says "nintendo are going with a different strategy to attract kid gamers".

Lose if you try to avoid being a purple lunchbox. Lose if you look like a sexy white slab of gloss.

Ok that was random.
(and I know a thing or too about that.)

Maybe I should have done on my comic "I'm Sorry but your Mommy is in another line."...

So Disneylands lines are less then 3 hours great.  Penny-arcade talked about the lines.  They said that once you go through all of the organized lines the inside isn't organized at all.  I don't think even Nintendo expected this sort of turn out.

If so I need to talk to them about design.  I have seperate lines for each game once you got into the inner sanctum then it would force you to syphon out to what game you want to play and I would have some of the put you into areas were people in the main line could watch you play.

You mean "Lose if you look like a sexy white slab of gloss... and are called 'Wii'."

Did you guys see the Washington Post article titled:  Nintendo's Wii steals show at expo
(http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/05/11/AR2006051101613.html)

or the one on Fox News:Nintendo's Wii Surprise Hit Among Video Game Expo Attendees
(http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,195292,00.html)

and these were just the ones I saw on the front and top of google news today
(news.google.com)

I think the mainstream press has really grabbed onto the wii as the 'next big thing'.  I think they see it as the next iPod.

I'll give Nintendo credit. Bad name or no, they're selling it very very well so far. They give this the right price and they've got this Christmas' #1 item.

And the gamefaqs polls keep painting a unique story:  Which of the consoles will you own by May 2007?
Again, as of about 15000 votes, a full 65% are planning to have a Wii, alone or alongside other consoles; 45% for PS3, 28% Xbox 360.

This is a monument to Nintendo's Blue Ocean strategy, market disruption, and the Wii.  I think I'd like to nickname the Wii "Whoa" from now on.

Couchmonkey, the line was ridiculously long...especially when you turned the corner near the exhibit door wall...the line went well into the non-showfloor area of E3.  I looked at it and walked away.  I spent much of the day covering the rest of the floor and in the other hall...most of it at the DS area.

I agree, everyone is amazed by the Wii. That's why I've decided to join the line of people waiting at Target in order to get their Wii's first the night before this thing hits. I'm hoping Nintendo doesn't gimp the production of the Wii, which I doubt it will. Either way, check this out:

That's what I'm expecting the night of the launch. Or at least, people running towards it during Christmas

I gotta say, I am really glad all my preaching to my other friends about Nintendo being right about there needing to be a change in the industry has been validated. Lets hope this steam can continue to build coming to launch and through Xmas.

More good news. Wii was the most visited IGN channel this week, taking a huge jump over the PS3 and 360 channels for the first time ever. The IGN editors also agreed that Nintendo definitely won the show, almost unanimously. Watch there Day 3 wrapup video to see a whole lot of Wii lovin'.

I thought this topic was going to be about Loli Pangya Golf!  Oh well...

But back on-topic, it's pretty amusing comparing the general outlook of Wii before and after E3...No, amazing...

It's true.  All three days of E3 belonged to the Wii.  Everytime the doors opened at 9 [even for us Early Media Access peeps] it was a stampede.  People would sprint for that booth while Sony reps were taking pictures offering us free PS3 laniards that no one wanted.

Playing the Wii was oodles as fun, even if to just swing the bat in Wii Sports: Baseball whereas playing Warhawk felt like I was being raped with a toothpick.  It was just not very fun.

Sonic Wii is GREAT!

Nintendo won this generation. They are back on top of the industry, dominating both the handheld and console markets. I'd bet my life on it. .... Ok that was going a bit too far, but I'd say right now Nintendo is looking like the most likely candidate.

Miyamoto and Steven Spielberg played Tennis on Wii at E3.  Spielberg had trouble taking his eyes off the game, even though he was already shaking hands with Miyamoto while his picture was being taken.

Nintendo won the generayshun.

UPDATED WITH AWESOME. courtesy of Yahoo News.

Thats a cool picture.

So there were real movie stars in the booth? In the interview with Kaplan she said George Clooney was there, but I thought she was joking.
