Title: Do you still care about the name?
Post by: Frozen Atlantic on May 11, 2006, 01:09:01 PM: I know there's eighty threads on this, but I wanted to get a post-E3 perspective.

I mean, most of us thought the name was corny when announced. But after seeing the games, and hearing the features.... my head says Wii is stupid, but my heart says STFU and buy it.

Is it still a marketing hurdle? Is it still open for mockery? (I think now that we're firmly behind the system, we'll be reveling in the entendre)... I was as anti-Wii as could be last week. Smash Brother pretty much laid my argument out perfectly (BTW, love your website).. but now? I desperately want to play with Iwata's Wii, and I don't care who knows about it.

But well, thanks god is just the name, something so superficial and cosmetic, instead of actual real important features of the console.

I still don't think they were right to choose that name, but I don't care to predict what effect it will have.

I'm hoping some enterprising accesory company makes decals that can replace or cover the ones that say Wii on the console and controllers. Not because I'm so petty that I can't stand having the name there, because I don't really care, but because it would be fun.

Post by: Ian Sane on May 11, 2006, 03:05:19 PM: Yes. I still think it creates a marketing obstacle for no reason whatsoever. I just feel better about the console in general because Nintendo's E3 showing is pretty hot and Sony has f*cked up big time with their insane price.

That's exactly how I feel.

I still think the name is pretty stupid, but I am so sold on the games I ALMOST can forgive it...Almost.

Rick Powers said that its the game themselves that could sell the Wii. He said that the trailer they showed at the press conference makes people want to try the games out.

I think in terms of marketing it will be a challenge for Nintendo to sell the name. BUT if they are able to convince people with commercials and a marketing campaign similar to the trailers they will be a success.

I mean, they even got MS praising them, completely ignoring Sony as a competitor!

Post by: Avinash_Tyagi on May 11, 2006, 06:34:04 PM: Not really, I was over the name issue about a week before E3, and now I couldn't care less, Nintendo's showing at E3 has pretty much wiped away all concerns, sure some of the games still need some work, but considering that a part of me was worried that Wii was totally going to bomb at E3 i'm vey happy with where everything is right now, almost all the games show promise and there are still at least six months for any kinks to get ironed out.

I actually used Wii in a conversation with my friend the other day and we didn't stop the conversation to point out how awful the name was like we had every other time we used it. It's still a bad name, but I'm used to it. It took me two weeks for it to become almost natural, I wonder if that will be the norm for most people.

Regardless, in my head, the only name I have for it is "The System That I'll Play Metroid On." Nothing else matters, really.

Post by: GoldenPhoenix on May 11, 2006, 11:19:30 PM: Well my stance has still stayed the same, I still think the name has promise (I love those Wii animation trailers) and will catch viewers. Really though the system is what is most important, and never has there been a system where I want to try so many games for it just to see what the interactive experience is like. The Wii remote is brilliant in that now each game can be different in its use, they aren't relegated to a digital stick and some buttons. All I have to say is Wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii! I can't wait .

XBox sounds like it's for Generation X / X-Treme marketing... which is long gone. Wii is for the iPod / Google generation. I don't really care for the name - but I don't really care about the name either. Based on the E3 showing, I think the name fits.

But I don't think in five years we'll see a Wii 360.

But, I was talking to a fellow video game buddy, and he said "Wii..." and it didn't sound strange or comical or anything. Then I said "Wii," in conversation, and it just sounded normal, like any old product name.

So yeah, I guess I'm over it like many others here.

It took the hardcore gamers time to get over the name, but then again, we were willing to give it a chance. I'm not convinced that an "ordinary" person would ever get past the initial snicker at the name and give it a try.

However ...

Perrin has said that they have plans that will allow for as many people as possible to try out Wii in advance of the launch (no doubt the annual Toy Test is part of the equation). That might go a long way towards increasing exposure to the games. Frankly, I almost hope that the name Wii just ends up taking a back seat to simply "Nintendo", but then again, they seem to want to separate the name Nintendo from the console (for reasons passing understanding).

I'm convinced the console will be a success, but I am concerned that the name will do more harm than good.

At this point it is obvious that the name itself created huge discussion, and not just among hardcore gamers. When the name was initially announced, it was all over the main-stream media. This topic alone reiterates the fact that it created the stir that I feel Nintendo wanted.

In my home, we talk about the Wii, but we joke around with the name just as much. The fact is that we trade Wii jokes constantly. Funny? yes! Does that make it bad? Not necessarily.

My twelve year old son first told me that he would still refer to it as the "revolution", but I haven't heard him use that name in the last week or so because referring to the "Wii" is just funnier and makes him laugh everytime. Isn't that what Nintendo wants? To make people smile. Whether intentional or not, the name does just that. For him, the name is no different than Wario having "fart" power in the new Smash Bros. game.

I have Wii homemade T-shirts that I wear.

The more I see about the system, the more I like the name. Its different and it stands out.

Picking on the name isn't neccessarily bad either. In the end, if you laugh at a name, but then recognize that the actual system is pretty cool and amazing then all you are doing is spreading the name around. That can be very good.

But it was definitely wise to release the name before E3, that worked beautifully. I haven't read a single name joke this week. And Reggie actually made it sound good.

Everytime I here something good about the Wii, I end up liking the name more. I especially like the name because of it's ability to become a prefix (i.e. WiiTennis, WiiMusic).

It's a nice prefix AND it makes the word look cool and sophisticatingly innocent.

I think it sums up the entire conference. I've gotten alot more used to the name. But I liked it to begin with. Now that there are hands-on impressions of Wii I'll be even more proud to bring it up in everyday conversation. It takes getting used to but it works...plain and not-so-simple, it works.

I can't wait to play. The name only made me wonder if mainstream people would dig it. Now that nongamers from various media outlets have played it and are reacting positively I"M EVEN MORE CONFIDENT IN ITS SUCCESS.

C'mon, in the past, if it had ANY glitches or mistakes the media would have completely ignored it in their articles (or mention Nintendo only in a negative light.) Now BBC, USAToday, Washington Post, even foreign sites and sites focused on other products are raving about Wii (I read hands-on imp's on an Ipod site yesterday).

Casual/nongamers like it enough to buy it? Since when? And this with nary a price or finalized release date. Heck, some of the people pledging allegiance to Wii HAVEN"T EVEN PLAYED IT. Just reading about how its played has people psyched.

That can only spell success.
