Title: Is force-feedback necessary? PS3 lacks it...
Post by: Kairon on May 10, 2006, 07:55:53 PM
With the reversion to the dual shock design Sony added tilt functionality, but they removed force feedback.

One reason could be that they don't have access to Nintendo's technology for gyroscopic/accelerometer sensors that can function through vibration.

Another reason could be that entire dual shock rumble technology lawsuit.

I can see this not being too much of a problem and shrugged off a little bit... what do you think?

The real reason is because force feedback is sooooo last gen.

Rumble isn't necessary, but it's a nice luxury. The Wavebird was fine without it. However, I'm saying this now; the first time I experienced rumble with Star Fox 64, my opinion would be completely different..

Another type of force feedback, though..

After being a wavebird guy for so long, I was genuinely shocked when the Wii remote vibrated in my hand.  It made Wario Ware all the cooler.

I don't like force feedback in most cases. I dunno, it seems so unnecessary most of the time. I remember thinking when I was playing GoldenEye back in the day, "Whoa, it's like I'm actually getting shot!"

I was an idiot back in the day.

I rumble. Maybe not strictly necessary, but I think little things like rumble and the controller speaker will stand out to first-time Wii players, and just sort of solidify the idea that the system is all about immersion.

No, the real reason is because Sony just got sued by Immersion and were too cheap to license their technology after stealing for the past ten years. Sony will probably release a new Dualshock controller for PS2 with no rumble as well.

Is rumble neccessary? No. Is it a nice addition? Yes.

However, those answers only apply when talking about a old gen controller. When talking about Nintendo's new gen controller, rumble is very neccessary, especially since there is a speaker on the unit.

Speaking of what Requiem of Darcness said, how come Sony hasn't already switched to rumble-less PS2 controllers if Immersion won the case?  Isn't the company breaking the law?  Anybody know anything about this?
