I mean, I can understand saying "Revolution" might not be natural to them, but anyone can say Rev/Revo. Check the comments for that article to find out what people from other nations think about it. The French also hate it.

The Nintendo "Yes" probably wouldn't go over well with me, either.

The only way the name will get changed is if the Japanese hate it. But then knowing Nintendo they'll chalk this up to Japanese hardcore gamers which don't fit in the non-gamers crowd. Japanese grandmas have to hate it.
The comparison to Stan Hansen is odd. Stan Hansen yells "HOOOOOO" at the top of his lungs but I don't really associate that with "WEEEEEEEEE". He also kicks ass and I would personally consider it good if something reminded me of him.

After all the puns about pricks and piss where off people will realize that it is also suggests tiny, so it will start all over again, but with the tiny dicks; then it will progress to homoerotic jokes because of the pairing of phalices. From there it can only get worse. The only positive is what the logo's look suggests, the dots in the ii could represent stereoscopics. If so, the name still sucks, and the timing was even worse off.

Homoerotics already arrived:
"Guys, let's go home and play with my wee." "Can we all play with your wee?" "Sure. The more people playing with my wee, the better."
"Mom, Timmy's coming over to hook our wees together."
It will only get worse.
Was anyone mocking Revolution? I don't think so. In fact, people loved saying "Viva la Revolution!"

The top for me is and will always be Twilight Princess remote functionality, but this is awfully close.

I'm reading more bafflement than hate. Hate sounds like "This is the worst name ever and my interest in the system has dropped to zero and now I'm going to pick up the system in 2007 in a bargain bin because it's like Nintendo just killed my first born child"

This blows TP revmote clear out of the water for me. Revmote functionality isn't going to hinder sales like this will.

You know, now that you mention it, I think in Fire Pro Wrestling S (and probably D too), Stan Hansen yelled "Wii!" when he did his jumping lariat.
Maybe when he was in Japan there was some cultural reason Hooo! wouldn't fly so they had him change it to Wii?

Don't the Japanese pronounce R as L?
So wouldn't the Revolution in Japan sound like levolution?
Title: RE: Japan hates Wii.
Post by: Bloodworth on April 28, 2006, 10:52:36 PM
No, that's a misconception promoted by bad translators and Japanese people trying to figure out when L or R is appropriate because the corresponding sound in Japanese is really kind of in-between the English L and R sounds.

Post by: Avinash_Tyagi on April 28, 2006, 10:57:34 PM
Oh, because in Anime a lot of names that seem to be spelled with an R sound like they are being spoken with an L.
But if its due to the reason you mentioned then ist should be ok to use Revolution.

Ryboushen it would sound like, not a great thing in Japanese tounge. Hey Bloodworth, it'll be ok. wii sounds like it'll be intresting. I think we should wait for E3 to make the call on the name, in the end the product sells the name, not the other way around.
I still wuv you :p

Never heard of that. Virtually every Stan Hansen match I've ever seen has been from Japan and he was yelling "HOOO!" in every one of them.
I'm thinking that maybe Japanese people can't properly imitate the "HOOO!" sound so when a wrestling fan impersonates Hansen they shout "WEEE!" and no one can tell the difference. Thus "WEEE!" is used in Fire Pro.

I haven't actually read the whole thread yet but I've wanted to punch Perrin Kaplen ever sense I've first heard her give information. She's annoying. Also I thought the golden goal was to leave people satisfied after hearing things from marketing. You should go in empty and leave filling full even if you got no information what so in. I can go in full and then read something that has anything to do with her and feel empty and unsatisfied. Bad marketing person bad.

Yeah I'm quoting myself bitches, sod off. What kotaku said was that in Japan the word "cute" was used alot more than "piss", therefore I don't get the title!

Post by: Wesisapie on April 29, 2006, 07:09:15 PM
I guess they said its like cute its because Wii looks somewhat like part of Kawaii (the japanese' favourite word). Someone mentioned they dont have a sound for "we" in their language which is true, they tend to say it more like OO-EE rather than WEE. about the R and L stuff, they just tend to say both sounds more like R, but its a tiny bit like an L too. for example i have trouble when people are talking about "rocks" but they mean "locks".
what do the japanese think about it? i think most of them are oblivious.
