Title: So I made a bet...
Post by: Knoxxville on April 26, 2006, 06:48:50 AM
Help me out fellas....

I made a $100 bet with the assistant manager of the local Game Crazy that is as follows:

He bet that at least 60% of Sega's (Genesis) and Nintendo's (NES) back catalogs would be BUILT-INto the Revolution....so basically, when you buy it, get home and open the box, you'll be playing Mario and Sonic in minutes.

I bet that he was totally of his rocker with that one (read: lucky to get some starter credits to put toward your 1st coupla downloads, but NOTHING out of the box).

So.....I'm I gonna be a hundred dollars richer or WUT!?!

your going to win a $100
We'll be lucky if maybe 5 games come on the Revolution for free.

60% is outrageous. I could totally see a few games built in... Mario and Sonic or something, but 60% is hundreds and hundreds of games... even if Nintendo's selling them for a quarter a download that's a lot of revenue they're giving up.

Yeah Nintendo wouldn't do that.  I doubt we get any freebies.  Discounts but not Freebies.  Also if anyone every suggests that the Rev needs to have a built-in game.  Kick them for me.  There hasn't been a successful mainstream console that has had a built in game.  Just doesn't happen.  History has Spoken.

It wouldn't really be a "built-in" game, it'd be a pack-in title just pre-installed on the internal memory.

I would think it might behoove Nintendo to have coupons instead of the games pre-installed though... it's a chance to show off how the download system works and get the consumer used to the idea.

Or...they could offer one free download from each system + a Rev game for free.

Nintendo would be unstoppable...like Tina Rexxx

Hey maybe with that 100 dollars your going to essentially have 60% or less than that in your system lol.

So what are you going to do with your $100?

LOL!

I don't know WHERE he got that from, but he was adamant that he read it somewhere and was convinced it was reputable.  I tried to argue him down a bit, but when I saw how staunch he was about it, I then decided to turn ignorance into profit!

I had witnesses too!

That's insane.  You're totally going to win that bet.  Why would Nintendo give away all that for free when they don't have to?  The download system, assuming it's priced correctly, is like free money for Nintendo.  No production costs and the games were made YEARS ago so there's no development.  For Nintendo it's pretty much 100% profit.

I'm scared for a store that has someone with such poor business sense in a management position.

....and that was the arguement I was making!  Go figure, right?

I told him that he's gonna have a lot of angry customers in his store the day of and after launch if he's getting pre-orders by spreading this propaganda!

Edit: When you can get Ian Sane to say, "That's insane", you must be doing something right.

I hope you lose! Then I'd be a hundred games richer
Seriously, you're gonna win no question.  Make sure he pays up.

I agree. Little or nothing built-in, but it would be funny if Rev with no disc booted to the original Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt.

$100 = 50% of your Revolution. Collect it before launch if possible.

How is the guy supposed to prove that 60% of the catalogs are pre-loaded?  Hypothetically IF games were pre-loaded would the two of you count them and then compare it to how many total games could possibly been made available?  Just deciding what qualifies as the official "back catalogs" that would make up the total 100% would be an excercise in itself.  Do you count Japanese-only games for example?  Aside from the obvious fact that Nintendo would never do it you have a huge advantage in that what the guy is betting will happen would be really hard to even prove.

Sorry.  Only 59% of Sega's and Nintendo's back catalogs are available.  Looks like I win.

~~

And Ian, I don't think that 60% was an exact figure, just a guideline. So if it was anywhere in the vicinity the guy would win the bet.. But it won't be.

Man, I must've been slow getting on the NES bandwagon despite my childhood so full of so many NES memories.  I feel like I'm the only one with the triple Game Pak of Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet.  Not only did it have the standard controllers and the Zapper, but also the Power Pad!  Come on.  I'm guessing that came after the double Game Pak of Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt which it sounds like everybody fondly remembers.

Anyway, no.  60%?  WTF.  More than half for nothing?  I can imagine the possibility of a few free downloads but 60% is hundreds.  It's been said already by everyone above me, I'm sure.

Can I call him an idiot?  It just seems SO out there.

Not that I would mind if you do end up losing somehow, but then again it would only be the crappy 60% of games.

I also got Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt/World Class Track Meet with my NES :-)

JonLeung: Actually, I never owned a NES or SNES. The first console I owned was a N64, which I got pretty late in its life cycle, so I was just going on what I had heard was pack-in with NES. (Before that I had played plenty of all three systems at friends' houses.) Actually, could you really do power pad with the Rev controller, anyway?
