Title: Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam confirmed for Rev
Post by: wandering on April 20, 2006, 10:47:03 PM
According to the latest issue of Nintendo Power. Not that exciting, but using the revmote for tricks could be interesting. Hopefully the game will be out at launch.

Like anyone didn't see this coming.

Still Tony Hawk is something every console HAS to have so at the very least it's good that the Rev has it.

I really like the sound of this direction.  I remember the original Tony Hawk having those downhill levels where you were constantly moving to the end of the goal and I loved the experience.

If you could get Tony Hawk Downhill Racing to feel like that, and have a good trick system I am game.

I think the Trick System can be modified and simplified some and not hurt the Hawk experience as well.

Yeah. Downhill Jam (I think that was the name of the level) remains my favorite level from any TH game. So hopefully we'll see more of that and less of the watered down gaming the last four TH games have brought.

i watched an interview about the game on ign and it seems like its going to be an SSX meets TH kinda game. i guess its a bit of fresh air for the series, i just wish they did more with the controls.

according to the interview you hold the wiimote NES style with your thumb on the dpad and you steer it by turning the controller in your hand (like when you were 5). the tricks still use dpad combo's and the press of the a button. i find that kind of lame. it would of been cool to treat the wiimote as the board and flip it and what not, but maybe that would be  a little exagerated. atleast we know nintendo builds sturdy products that could take a few hits so maybe its not TOO far off.

plus from what i read on some other site, looks like THDJ might be a wii exclusive, because ps3 and xbox360 are getting something more "traditional" with huge free-roaming worlds.

is that a pro or con though?

Oh, it's definitely a pro. I think everyone is sick of traditional Tony Hawk gameplay now.

that was my opinion too. i didnt bother picking up Wasteland becuase THUG2 was so mediocre. i dont know if its because i've been playing since THPS1 and have been able to "master" every game since that the challenges just arent hard, or because the challenges are just so damn repetitive.

downhill jam in THPS1 was a cool level, if i recall it was the only one where you race down hill to accomplish you goals. wiat no there was the mall, but it wasnt as face paced. in the mall you could easily go back and get something you've missed, but those hills in downhill jam made it difficult to retrace your steps. now it seems they are going for a competitive downhill race. i could see this as a good single player if its you and multiple boarders going downhill and getting in eachothers way. online multiplayer would be fun too, but split screen in tony hawk never works. those words are too big for only two boarders, online multiplayer would be awesome for it. the THUG games on GCN didnt have multiplayer and i didnt have a ps2 to try it out so im not sure how it worked out. on the same not, never went online with my DS so i cant take Sk8teland for a spin either.

one of the levels shown on the ign interview (via concept art) shows a sanfransisco type level. i assume its that city because it is known for its hills. haveing even just four players on a narrow street racing downhill trying to reach grinds would be very competitive and i like that. my interest for this game has grown, though i still wish the controls would be different; ie. they would use motion controls for more than steering.

i think turning the wiimote into a virtual skateboard and simply moving with the analoge stick would be very intuitive.

defnately a pro

I like the old TH games

but they're very hard to play
(unless you're a gamer or a skateboarder...I'm both) so i never could play it with many folks to play it with

I admit, when I heard the idea of THDJ
I wasn't too pleased. However, after hearing the controls...I'm psyched to play it and show others about it.

The control scheme is so elegant and simple:

tilt to turn
a to ollie
b to flip
B-trigger to grab
d-pad to modify the flip / grab

I love it...I think even casual gamers will "get" these controls.

And since its intuitive, the pace can be pretty frenetic which = untold multiplayer fun!

It is an exclusive for Wii, as was anounced by the newest Nintendo Power.

Pro or Con? Pro, because it is something new to the series. I played THPS2 and it was cool and all, then I played THPS3 and I just couldn't get into it because it was tedious, I tried THPS1 and even then I was bored.

And who said there wasn't enough buttons?  This game doesn't even use that giant one in the middle.

Definite pro.
This is what the Wii needs.
Multi-platform titles won't sell consoles. It's exclusives that will. Now in addition to Nintendo's own expected exclusives its getting some surprising third-party exclusives thanks to the innovative controller as well as the console's ease in development. Who will be able to resist buying a Wii at the very least as a second console to go go along with their 360 or PS3? Especially at half the price.

Looks like new screens were added:

Linkified from GameSpot

It looks as if you hold the wiimote sideways and you "balance" on your board, or something...

Graphics are meh...

Let's just face it, the graphics are pretty awful... they would be subpar for even a GCN game now adays.

Honestly, I think the graphics are more just "bad" than "meh." And the art is awful - trees growing right out of concrete. Oh well, no one ever played stunt games for environmental eye candy.

Well.....seeing as how Activision doesn't have final dev kits, I don't see this as too bad.

IGN posted some first impressions of the game...the conclusion was that the graphics look like current gen stuff with amazing controls...

I'm wondering if we're setting ourselves up for disappointment in regards to Wii's graphics. Everything we've seen so far has been simple (Tennis) or crappy (Downhill Jam, Rayman - which I thought was current gen til I saw Downhill Jam) or touched up (Red Steel). Will Wii make our eyes hurt?

Occasionally!

I'm just worried about third party games. Third party 360 games look pretty good. I was kind of hoping, what with the ease and development and all, baseline Wii games would also look pretty good.

3rd Party 360 games look good?

Looks at King Kong, Gun, the EA sports titles....

Remember that most of the early titles will have been developed on gamecube based dev kits that weren't at full power.

I've never expected Wii to blow away GameCube or Xbox...yeah, this game looks very "current gen".  It's pretty disappointing, really.  I know graphics aren't that important, but let's not lie: this system is severely underpowered next to the other two.  Of course, it's also a buttload cheaper, most likely.

It doesn't just look "current-gen." It looks like early current-gen.
