Title: Ethical Dilemma
Post by: ShyGuy on April 20, 2006, 05:01:01 PM
I picked up MonkeyBall DS for my sister as a graduation present.  Would it be wrong of me to open it up and start  playing it before I give it to her in  a couple of weeks?

You don't want to look like an EB Games employee, do you?

Sure, play it.

Why not? Nobody will know.

If it was me, half the fun of getting a new game or DVD is delicately unwrapping it. So yeah, I'd know.

Well if the gift was for me and you did that I'd know and I'd let you know that I knew and probably deal with it in a somewhat violent manner.

Would you want someone playing with your game before they gave it to you?  That's the approach one should take with any ethical question.

It's ethically sound if you give me her phone number and address.

(Ah, the great PGC tradition of indirectly hitting on forumer's sisters)

I'd say leave it be, I know I wouldn't want anyone playing my game if it were a  brand new present for me. Gotta love that feeling of tearing off that plastic.

Go ahead and sleep with your sister if she's hot.

Oh, wait.

No don't play with the game.

I think it's a good rule  of thumb that if you have to ask on the Internet, you shouldn't be doing it.

Follow up.

Still haven't opened it.

Here is more of the back story:
When I found out the Rev was backwards compatible, I told my sister I would give her my Gamecube when she graduated from college. Since the Rev isn't out, I don't want to part with my cube just yet.

So instead I bought my buddy's 3 month old DS and his copy of Animal Crossing Wild World to give to her for a present in place of the cube, because she played AC on my DS like crazy over Christmas break.

So, she is getting the used DS, AC:WW, and a gba game as a "spare clip" plus I got her the new Monkey Ball DS game because she is a big Monkey Ball fan.

KDR_11k: EB Games employees play the new games then reshrink wrap them and sell them?

Ian: Violence seems a little extreme for the gift of a used game, but okay.

Hostile Creation: Stay away from my sister, perv!

Edit: Spak-Spang: I'm alerting the authorities

Edit: couchmonkey: It's not an overly serious question, I find entertaining and insightful to read everyone's responses.

It depends on the kind of relationship you have with your sister (not Spak's kind of relationship).

You already gave her a used ds/games and told her you giving her your used cube so she should be use to getting used stuff from you so do it. Unless she knows your giving her a new game that oyu haven't play before then don't.

Seriously, in what universe would that be ok?

So you promised her a particular gift, but decided you'd rather keep it for yourself because you're not done with it yet?  Somewhere Peggy Post is spinning in her grave.

Well, she will still get the gamecube in the fall when the Rev comes out, so it isn't like I'm keeping it for myself. In the end she will get two Nintendo systems as presents from me.

I've already told her she doesn't get the cube yet and she's fine with it.

Well, not openning the game would show her that you love her more than giving her the game pre-played.
Because then it's like you bought it just for her, special, as opposed to for yourself. Besides, you might not be able to part with it.

As far as I know, all DS games besides Nintendo's are shrink-wrapped.  So, if you have access to a shrink-wrapping machine, you can always seal it back up without anyone knowing that it has ever been opened.

I first came to this conclusion when I picked up Castlevania: DoS.  I picked it up the first day it came out, saw the wrapping, and thought that it was odd.  Then, when I turned on the game, the first message I got was something like, "The save data is corrupt.  Would you like to delete it?" or something like that.  Thinking that it was a faulty game, I took the game back the next day for a new copy.  That's when I saw that all DS games besides Nintendo's have cheap wrapping.

Back on topic....

Personally, I don't care if someone opened a game, that they bought, before giving it to me.

With the exception of a few PC games (which I suspect weren't wrapped at all and the store added wrapping) I haven't seen a single shrink-wrapped game in stores. All console/handheld games are in folded foil with a little band to tear it open. If your console game is shrinkwrapped that means a store clerk has tampered with it.

If I got a game someone used I wouldn't be sure how much he used it, for all I know he could just have taken one of his old games, deleted the saves and wrapped it in gift paper.

Here they games are in the CD wrapping, not shrink wrapping. Only GBA games are shrink wrapped (as were all former boxed games).

GBA and DS games are fold wrapped as well here. Games hat come in cardboard boxes usually aren't wrapped at all, I suppose that increases the risk of getting a used CD key but it's not hard to spot a box that has been tampered with (visible folds on the flap).

Hello all, here is the followup for the ethical dilemma.

I controlled myself and didn't open the Monkey Ball game. My sister loved the DS with Animal Crossing and Monkey Ball. She said she wouldn't have cared if I had opened it.

BTW, Monkey Ball is a fun little game, the regular puzzle levels seem really hard on the DS, but the air hockey mini game is really fun.
