Title: How did I ever live without the DS Lite?
Post by: Garnee on April 15, 2006, 11:28:38 AM
Modding this to official topic

I got my DS Lite yesterday...I'm in complete awe.  The screen is so bright, I thought it was a lighthouse at first.  Without the bulk, games are actually fun to play.  Call me stupid for buying everything Nintendo throws my way, but the DS Lite rocks.  Animal Crossing no longer gives me headaches!

Do the brighter screens plus the smaller form give the impression the screens are larger?

It does. Nearly everyone I show it to thinks the screens are bigger.

I want white. Will probably get one. It'll be the first redesign I've ever bought (only ever owned the original GBA, but mostly used my GBPlayer anyway). It's just TOO nice.

A DSLite in black is the blackhole of attention, all eyes are shifted towards it, nothing will escape it, nothing.

Well.. maybe Nintendo has heard my cry for black version..

Here is, supposedly, a new Famitsu scan with the DS Lite - looks black to me..

Hopefully it's confirmed for launch over here.

I saw that scan too but I don't want to keep my hopes so high, I'm already too excited about E3 and I don't want to cause a short-circuit from too much excitment.

NOA generally pisses me off like this.  "White DS Lite only."  RACIST!  They did the same crap with the GBA, even in a lesser extent the GC.  There were a lot of colors of GC I never saw here.

I finished paying off my Lite today and screwed around with a display unit that GameStop had.

It fixes all the things that I didn't even know were broken on the regular DS. The screen, the buttons, the sexiness, it's all vastly superior. You may say to yourself right now "My regular DS works fine," but you won't say that once you see it and wrap your hands around it and feel it. So avoid it if you don't have $130 to throw around right now.

Woot, I started an official topic! =)

Also, my DS Lite is still awesome.  It shipped with a burnt in pixel though...blue on the top of the top screen.  It's usually not noticable anyway.

(reposted due to thread being locked due to...something)
We got the Lite display kiosk thing at the WalMart I work at, and I tried it out for a few minutes today. I must say, the screens are gorgeous. I love the case, and how slim the system is. However, that's where the love ends.
I really don't like the new d-pad, or the buttons. They feel mushy and fragile, like if I play the system for a week they'll break (especially the d-pad).
So, I think I'll stick with my current NDS. The screens aren't quite as nice, but it's not like they're terrible (I remember when first seeing a DS and loving the screen then), and I much prefer the buttons, and I think the regular DS has the best d-pad of any handheld...ever, really.

I detest the current DS d-pad. It hurts, it's like a razor.

I like the current DS set-up, but hopefully I'll get to try the lite eventually.  Even if I like it a lot better, I'm not buying one, I could afford several more games for that money.

Actually, no, I mean "mushy and fragile" as in it feels like it's already broken, and playing NSMB on it was impossible to control. I really want to love the Lite, I think the new shell and screens are wonderful, but that d-pad has got to go...maybe if they do a third one, or if I can somehow mod a Lite to have a better d-pad and buttons, I'll get one.

We can agree to disagree then.  The buttons are the primary reason I plan on grabbing a Lite tomorrow.

As a side note, I stopped at about 5 stores today to try and get one a day early.  The closest I got was playing ignorant at a circuit city like I didn't know the official date was tomorrow.  The guy behind the counter was just as clueless, handed me one, and told me to take it to the cash register.  I thought I was golden until the computer wouldn't let the guy ring it out.

Picked up my DS Lite at 1:45AM at the local Walmart. Could not be happier with it. I will have to agree with Pale on the whole button argument. Thus far I can not find a single thing that is better on the original DS. Thank you Nintendo for the sexiest piece of hardware you have ever created.

I got mine, I love it, it's charging on my bed right now, screens are great, buttons are great, the design is great, blah blah blah.

Anyways, does anyone else find the touch screen to be a marked improvement over the regular DS'? It's a bit stickier and it seems like it's much more durable. I think that's my favorite improvement.
Title: RE: Official DS Lite Thread!
Post by: Pale on June 11, 2006, 12:27:14 PM
I got mine too... For everyone equated the the brightest setting to death, I expected brighter... I'm actually enjoying playing on the brightest setting.
Title: RE:Official DS Lite Thread!
Post by: Jensen on June 11, 2006, 02:42:39 PM
Yeah, I wasn't blown away when I tested it in my car right after buying it (very high ambient light).  I don't use the brightest setting inside, though.

I hope future DS games have color mode settings.  The ultra-saturated colors throw off the color palette in some games.   The lava in NSMB looks rad, but the coins are neon yellow. Final Fantasy Tactics Advance has a few color modes, and they help somewhat.  The screen doesn't refresh as fast, so movement is blurred some.

The curved underside of the original is more comfortable than the more boxy underside of the Lite.

The Start and Select buttons are very small and take quite a bit of pressure to press.   (BAD)

The Touch screen has the grid of dots like some of the original DS systems, but is less mushy. (GOOD)

I got mine today at Circuit City.  The computer wouldn't ring it up, the info had to be typed in manually.  I got Brain Age for free, though.

Post by: Jome20 on June 12, 2006, 04:22:09 PM
Yesterday, I picked up a DS Lite and Big Brain Academy at Gamestop.

It seems like my system has a couple of dead pixels on it though. Ironically, I guess the main reason I can tell is because the screens are so bright and beautiful. I never realized but my old DS also has these little pixels but because the screen isn't nearly as bright I never noticed and it didn't affect gameplay. Sadly, since the DS Lite's screens are so bright it makes the bad pixels so much more obvious.

How common is this? I think there's probably one or two bad pixels on my DS Lite. The bad pixels don't have any real color. I'm not sure if I should try and return my system or just deal with it. If this is common, then I may get another one that's even worse.

Of all of you guys out there that have picked up a new DS Lite, how many have you experienced one or two little bad pixels on your system?  I wanna know how common this is.  Would I even be able to return the system to the store, or would I have to ship it to Nintendo of America?

Although if I did return it ... I may be able to take advantage of the Best Buy / Circuit City deal to get a free copy of Brain Age.  This isn't a huge priority though.

I have one stuck subpixel near the edge of the top screen.
Against a black or dark backgorund, there is a faint green dot.  I didn't notice it until I put in Metroid Prime: Hunters, which has a black title screen.

I have not noticed any dead pixels yet, so far I have 0 complaints about the system. It is definately a sexy beast.

Post by: davidctaylor on June 13, 2006, 04:38:35 AM
I have a friend who has a dead pixel.  I flipped mine on yesterday before I got out of the store's parking lot just to make sure.  I love it.  I never had a DS, so I don't have anything to directly compare it to.

BTW, is it just me or does EBGames go out of its way to alienate customers?   I went there to buy one and they wouldn't honor the BB/CC free Brain Age deal.  I want to buy from the little guy, but I wanted this game.  $20 is $20.  Also, they had Mario Kart but had lost the box and wouldn't sell it to me.  I have credit I can't use.  :-(   Grrrrr.  Ok, I'm done bashing EB for today.

Wait, did you just call ebgames the little guy?
Title: RE:Official DS Lite Thread!
Post by: Knoxxville on June 13, 2006, 08:36:21 AM
Yeah, he did, and I see his point of view.  He's prolly referring to the likes of Wally World, Target, Circut City, and Best Buys as the big guys, and sees the GC's, EB's, and GS' as mom and pop stores, I reckon.

I have a quick question for anyone out there. Has anyone experienced having a constant red or blue pixel on the touch screen of their DS Lite or original DS? If so, do you know if there is any way to get rid of it, will it just go away, or should I replace the system? Any help would be appreciated.
Title: RE: Official DS Lite Thread!
Post by: Athrun Zala on June 13, 2006, 03:56:38 PM
that's a stuck pixel, which is like a dead pixel but is permanetly on instead of off.....

so, you'll have to get it replaced....

Maybe I am the only one, but I go out of my way to avoid EB and GS. I don't know how anyone can call them the little guys.

Their business is run on buying back games for peanuts then selling them at near full price and they have a stranglehold on this market(Even Ebay sellers consult the used game prices of GS and EB when selling an item). I rarely ever step into one where the clerks know a single thing about games and wind up selling customers wrong products. I can't tell you how many times I have seen people (uninformed parents mostly) buy games that completely suck at the suggestion of a clerk simply because the clerk is trying to move stagnant merchandise.

EB and GS are not little, they generate the majority of business in game sales and if there was a bit more competition in the Used Game market perhaps we would have more reasonable used game prices and sell back prices.

Mr. Jack, you are not the only one.

To Kairon: there is no little guy anymore unless you have a nice locally owned shop in your area.  If that's the case, you won't get any of the games on launch day, but shop there to support the little guy.

Glad I'm not the only one who won't support them Pale. By the way you ever shop at the Game Craze stores out here? Sometimes they have some good deals on newer games and they are great for picking up older games. I'm glad there is alternative out here in Rochester, NY, hopefully the rest of you guys have someplace local to grab some better deals.

There's a way to fix a stuck pixel if you have a GBA ROM cart.  I remember there's a thread floating around here somewhere started by Smash_Brother that deals with the issue.  I looked, but can't find it.

You might also want to try a Google search.

I'd be more inclined to shop at EB and Gamestop if they didn't have a practice of trying to shove extra sales down your throat. I know how to take care of my games, I don't need to buy "insurance" for them. That always sounds kinda creepy to me..."Nice game, be a SHAME if somethin' were to HAPPEN to it, ya know..."
And yeah, their "We'll give you 5 bucks for a game then sell it for 5 dollars less than a factory-sealed copy" business sucks, too. And don't get me started on how they'll sell you the floor demo at full price despite it being opened and having stickers all over the case.

Everything is awesome, except I really expected the screens to be a little brighter....not that it's BAD, but it's not "death."  Also, the D-Pad seems a little loose in it's casing, it slides around a bit...Is this normal?

And if those anime CDs retail for around $10-$15, rest assured they're bootlegged.

Legit anime CDs, after the cost of importing from Japan, aren't cheap.

Hardly any CD from Japan is cheap. Looking at one right now that is a soundtrack to the latest "One Missed Call" film that retails for ¥3,059.... and that's just the retail price, forget adding on shipping.

Makes collecting soundtracks from the country so damn expensive, although I just can't resist...

obviously NOT SO cheap, but $34 for Gundam SEED Destiny OSTIII seems pretty reasonable to me.....

thus far it seems they have OSTs in the 30s, Singles in the 20s, and the only CDBOX they have as of now (Cowboy Bebop) at 122......

obviously, there isn't a huge catalog, but the simple prospect of being able to buy them here (instead of importing and being raped by the customs) is simply.....marvelous ^_________^

Unless of course you are buying the legit R1 CD anime soundtracks from Geneon.  While it's not a huge catalogue, they have a good number of exellent discs at srp of only $14.99.  Check Rightstuf.com, or BB has them as well.

I want the one from PSO but I doubt you can even find it anymore and at the time I was looking importing was going to set me back like $40-50 bucks.  blah... I can't afford that.  That could get me another copy of the game.
