Title: Oh my damn...
Post by: Nile Boogie on April 12, 2006, 03:51:08 AM
Everytime I hear something about Nintendo, smart or dumb, I always post it here. If it turns out to be close or correct, YAY!! If it turns our to be foolhearty and way off base, so what, no harm no foul. Now, lets put the rubber to the road.
Does anyone know how sonar works? Can you have sonar out of the water? Sounds Fishy but so did the upside down optical mouse with a blue light.

I AM AFRAID I WILL NEED MORE INFORMATION, SIR.

SONAR works by emitting a loud noise (ping) that travels through the water and is reflected by any objects nearby, the reflections are used to determine position, the delay for determining distance (like RADAR except with sound, hence the name). It can work outside of water as evidenced by bats. I'm not sure if it works for determining terrain shape.
If you want to use ultrasonic to determine the sensor position we're back at the Power Glove.

RADAR would probably make a lot more sense...

Pardon my ignorance, the Power Glove's sensor array used ultrasounds? Cool!

Maybe not Sonar/Radar per se. Maybe it's just a really sensitive mic. So, lets say while playing Red Steel, I come to a guard, I cant kill him so I need to move his attention elsewhere. So I throw a penny in the direction I want him to look or investigate but "I" really throw an object H the Nintendo Concept can locate not only motion but sound as well. I thought that was sonar but thanks . So basically what I'm saying is what everybody else was, the last secret is a mic, but not in the conventional thought.
Come to think of it I don't really believe it but hell, I thought the Eagles would win the SuperBowl.

I don't think that sound sensor idea would work properly. Imagine all the other noises that happen in a house, all the creeks(sp?), cars and people passing near a house. There's too much sound polution for such an idea to be viable, but then again Nintendo can prove me wrong any day of my life and I will have an even happier face !

Yeah, ambient noise would make this a nightmare. I got killed more than once playing Manhunt because somebody slammed a car door outside my window. And that's with a headset... imagine if that mic was sitting in the middle of the room.
Radar would be bad too in this case, because I can just picture my cat roaming around the room and getting interpretted as a tossed penny.

But I think it may force you to play in a more life like way. We already know how the real time clock works in AC. Now Imagine having to break into a building in a game but its too many guards in the day. You might have to come back at night, in the game and in real life because at night there's less noise (unless you live in New York City, I'm so sorry). Or if in a music game you have to snap you fingers on beat, in a certain area of the room. It's a very thin theory at best.

Someone has never been to a big city... constant noise all the time, sirens, etc.
And Tokyo is probably worse than Manhattan or Chicago.

Maybe the dome things they use at footbal game I'm not sure where it only picks up where its pointed but on a smaller scale. I'm from a small town in Southeasten Pennsylvainia right north of Chester County. It doens't get "too" noisey here.

The day a video game decides my shcedule for me is the day I shoot myself in the head. It would be as annoying as tying a game clock to real-world time, so if you want to visit someone who comes out at 3 AM you have to actuyally play the game at 3 AM. (I know Animal Crossing does this, but they let you adjust it freely).

I would like to point out that with internet access, the Revolution's real time clock could simply sync with an internet time server, although I guess you would still have to give it a time zone.

It could probably divine your time zone from your IP address.
I don't know why Nintendo would do this though.

Sound is not always a good idea, I remember I was playing Feel the Magic on a school bus one time (a fairly long trip) I couldn't complete this one mission (the one where you have to blow the sail of the boat). The damn game thought the sound of the bus was me blowing on the mike.
Edit, I realize your probably not going to be playing the rev on a bus, but I wanted to show how outside sounds can be a problem.

I'm not sure, SONAR emits a spherical signal, RADAR is limited to a circle because of how electromagnetic waves are emitted. Also, RADAR causes cancer.

Echo Visor, baby.

this post is damn late but i have nothing better to do...
ECHO VISOR ROCKS! i probabl played the rest of the game using that baby, it was just so cool!
and yes the concept of a 'sonar' of types in the game woudl be interesting but outside sounds as well as in game sounds would ruin it. unless the micrphone was able to block any in game sounds, but outside sounds would ruin everything. people are already setting off fireworks in my neighborhood (as well as car alarms and the occasional gunshot/police siren...) so imagine that. im playing a stealth FPS, im about to turn a corner and sneak up on an unsuspecting gaurd and....BAM! firwork goes off outside, game interperets it to a gunshot, gaurd turns around/sounds alarm..im screwed game over. THANKS ALOT!

Bump:
Well, looks like there is some sound type device in the controller and its not a Microphone. Hmm, I wonder what it could...

Quote And Tokyo is probably worse than Manhattan or Chicago.
Actually, considering its density, I think Tokyo is a fair bit quieter than Manhattan or Chicago, largely because there's much less car traffic (of course there's a lot, but not compared to the population, and it tends to move very slowly), a wider distribution of busy areas (there's not just one "city center", but rather many across the city) and most importantly, a very mixed character -- quiet residential areas are mixed right in with the shopping districts.
Of course this doesn't apply if you happen to be standing next to a shop which has decided upon a massive loudspeaker advertising campaign...
