Title: Tetris DS marathon
Post by: MegaByte on March 24, 2006, 08:41:19 PM
One of the broken gameplay mechanics included in Tetris DS was the ability to rotate pieces forever. Because of this, endless mode really is endless... there's nothing holding you back from playing other than tedium. Yesterday, I began a Tetris marathon. I found that after I got 999 lines, the line counter maxed out. I decided to try and max the score counter next. At this point I had about 3 million points, so this didn't seem like a big deal. Unfortunately, I found that this counter continues past 9,999,999. Since I'd like to play other games on my DS, I didn't want to attempt 100 million, since that would take days or weeks. I decided that I would then try to max out the level counter instead to see if they programmed it properly. After approximately 10 hours of play, I finally reached level 999, and the counter did hold. I finally killed my game after over 10,000 lines and 26.7 million points. My reward: stronger thumbs (?)

Hahaha, awesome. I'm actually tempted to get the game now just to see what the maximum score is :P
...it looks like there's room for a few more digits there.

Holy ****.
Even with rotating pieces the highest I've gotten is level 19 :P (152 lines, I think). I guess I'm just so bad that the rotating piece thing doesn't "break" the game for me >_>

I have to try this one, I have already beaten every version of tetris Ihave ever played so I am sure I can fidn the end to this one also.

I don't get this stuff about rotating pieces, is it in the manual?

Here is the deal, if you can recall from GameBoy tetris when the falling pieces touched the stack, they were set in place, like it or not. Apparently in Tetris DS that is not the case. Once the falling pieces touch the stack as long as you keep rotating the tetris piece it doesn't set in place. So you can move it around and find an appropriate place for it, probably to combat the fast fall rate of high levels. This I believe is what is refered to as "Infinite Spin".
I have no clue though if MegaByte is being truthful regarding maxing the line counter and level counter, though.

Well, crap. I'm glad I found out about this before I bought it. Are the other modes worth it, at least?

Uhm... You should play it online before you pass judgement on it. Megabyte either photoshop'd those images and is lying through his teeth, or just extrodinarily gifted. I've played it single player, online, and with my friends, and "infinite spin" does not make the game a cakewalk, at all.

I didn't even look at the pictures. I hate the infinite spin in Tetris Worlds already. While I'd love to try it before passing judgement, that would require buying it, unfortunately.

So that's the infinite spin? I was doing that already (albeit not constantly) to help me sometimes when I wasn't quick enough to find a place for the tetrimino, I actually found it wierd that the tetriminos would only lock to another piece/floor after 1 second or less.

Is it different in Tetris Worlds, though? I played Tetris DS more today and found out you can't spin the tetriminos indefinatly. They lock into place after 2 - 3 seconds regardless of how much you spin the tetrimino.
And regarding purchasing... Of course I can't tell you what to purchase, but I'll say you're doing yourself a disservice if you don't purchase a copy. It is a hell of a lot of fun, espicially on WFC.

You could still rotate the tetrads (shorter name from Star Tropics FTW) when they visually touched the stack in the GB Tetris and I think there was a slight additional delay before locking in place (i.e. the tetrad remained mobile for longer than it would normally stay in one position while in the air) on higher levels.

Whew!...HEY! What is THIS CRAP?
Man I come back from my Tetris DS marathon of super happy fun time that's been going on since last Tuesday and THIS is what you boys are saying about this game? Baloney. (You have to type in that way when you mean it as "Untrue" or else some dip will actually phoentically pronouce "bologna" and wouldn't know what the hell I was typing on and on and on and on about!)
Let me give you peeps the REAL scoop on Tetris DS. You guys ever think that a game maybe, just maybe, should be regulated as an addictive narcotic? Me neither. Not untill now anyway....
Uhm listen, I have to go and play I mean WASH, my hair.
That's right.
Wash.
My hair.

I've taken up this endless Tetris DS marathon challange - I started last night (I cheated and paused my game). I've got 999+ lines, Level 131, 3,377,684 points and one hell of a sore thumb.
And I still need to play through Hunters.

It was possible to slide and rotate pieces into place on the stack, but the window of opportunity was so small that it required a bit of skill to actually do it at high levels. If you can take a two or three second breather after any piece falls to plan your next move, where's the challenge? I wouldn't even mind the feature being in the game for those who like it if I could turn it off, but it appears that's not an option.

How about you answer that after you've actually played with it. What I am saying, I guess, is that it doesn't make as big of a difference as you think it does. Really when the pressure is on from a high stack and the stack is filled with holes, it doesn't make much difference.

Well, I've played Tetris Worlds, and I hated it. I agree wholeheartedly with Gamespot's review of that game. So when Gamespot's review of Tetris DS says it's still bad in this version, I tend to believe them. Other reviewers mention this feature without docking points for it. Of course, that's not all there is to Tetris DS, and even Gamespot's review praises the other modes, which leads me back to my original question. Do the other modes carry the game well enough to be worth the money, or do they come across as glorified minigames? I would love to try the game before deciding, but unless you can make that happen for me, it's not very helpful advice.

There is always GameFly for game rentals, or friends if they have a copy, and i'm sure there are store DS kiosks with a demo version of the game in them.
As far as the other modes though, I can't comment really, because i'm having so much fun with the online modes. I did try single player "Catch", and it is quite fun.

Yes, the other modes as well as the nostalgia factor make the game worth it. It's only classic Tetris that was broken.
You can spin the blocks indefinitely unlike what 31 Flavas said, in offline mode. I believe they still lock after a time in online mode.
No, this was not a Photoshop, and although I consider myself good at Tetris, that really had little bearing on my ability to do what I did.
There is another thing that I consider broken about the game compared to classic Tetris: not only can you spin forever, but the way certain pieces rotate allows you to actually climb back up the stack!
Other things that don't necessarily break the game but make it much less of a challenge include the ridiculous number of next blocks, the ability to hold a piece, the fact that all blocks start at the same orientation, and the fact that blocks start off of the top of the screen. They put in options for Ghost Piece and Hard Drop, so I don't know why they couldn't have put in other options.

That's good to hear. I'll probably pick this up at some point. The puzzle modes sound interesting. Thanks!

I bought this last weekend, and I've confirmed that the marathon is broken. I didn't even notice the option to turn on endless mode the first time, so I got quite a shock when it just suddenly ended at 200 lines. The presentation is nice, and I nearly lost when that Russian folk song I can't spell started playing at level 19 because it made me laugh. I've come to the conclusion that the game's difficulty progression is pretty borked, too, though. In the old days, before infinite spin, I could almost get to level 20 before totally losing control of the situation. In Tetris DS, the pieces start falling almost instantly at a much lower level. I have a feeling it's because they messed up the fall rate progression that infinite spin became necessary.
I'm still happy with the purchase, though. Push mode is the best multiplayer puzzle game ever. I love how you can mess with each other directly. There's nothing like removing the floor just before your opponent drops his I down a hole. Puzzle mode is good, too, but the cheery music gets old fast. I judge all puzzle game soundtracks against Tetrisphere and The New Tetris these days, so Tetris DS loses a few points there.
