Title: There are TWO kinds of videogames in this world:
Post by: MODE_RED on March 18, 2006, 10:48:27 PM
Those with lost potential (bored holding normal controller)
and
Those with found kinetic... (holding Revolution controller)
(print ad and commercial)
There are TWO kinds of game players in this world:
Those who can't EXPRESS themselves (Frustrated gamer throws down the normal controller and makes slashing motions with arm)
and
Those who clearly can (person holding Revolution controller making disturbingly gratifying slashing motions to slay a dragon while mumbling "that'll teach you to burn my village!")
(print and commercial)
Energy wasted (Person making sick face while contorting body with normal controller in hand, trying to make character jump, etc.)
and
Energy gained (Person with Revolution controller feigns transformation into powerful warrior with He-Man/Liono of Thundercats style posing, and is caught by household members, who want to play.)
(print ad and commercial)
NRG well spent (people holding Revolution controllers)
The Nintendo Revolution Gaming System
If a Revolution is at hand, YOU ARE ITS eNeRGy.
(print ad and commercial)

None of these advertising slogans are decent. Please tell me you don't do this for a living.

Main that's a bit harsh... I don't think they are that bad. You have to realize that Ninty is banking on differentiation and that is what his slogans focus on. They may need to be polished, but they aren't that bad.

They are all pretty damn mediocre.

What's the basis of comparison?
Sony's god-awful "You are not (red) e." or Microsoft's yawn-worthy "It's good to play together!" or the DS's innuendo-laced "Touching is good!"?
Energy works on more levels because it implies that gaming is no longer an activity for fat-ass kids who are bad at sports but that coordination and physical stamina now play into the concept (which they should). I'm not going to say these slogans are flawless, but they're certainly going in the right direction.
They should prey on insecurity, showing morbidly obese people sitting on couches holding xbox/ps2 controllers, then the thin, fit people standing up and using the Rev controller.
Insecurity sells, and in this case, it's actually legitimate.

If I found someone in my house acting out He-Man, I'd tell him to go get a boyfriend.

I agree; some of you were pretty harsh.. I don't think they're bad at all - they just need a bit of polishing.

There are two kinds of advertising:bad, and good. There are no ad campaigns that are "in need of a little polishing"
I was, and am, being harsh.

I'm glad everything is so black and white in your world Omen.

The ads might be good if worked into some kind of long-form thing. You know what I mean. Press releases and such. I think your slogans are a bit too long/wordy for your standard ad.

There are two kinds of gamers in the world: Those that are perfectly happy with their old console. Those that want the Revolution. Those that can't count.

Yeah...I read about 10 of the the poster's first words and my *FANBOY ALERT!* popped up, so I ran away screaming. It is true that the Revolution controller will be very innovative and provide a totally new way to play games, but don't be so hard on the traditional pads. Microsoft and Sony have decided to perfect their gamepads and focus on making the hardware very powerful and very online-oriented. Nintendo, in a way, is doing the opposite. They have decided to make the console as powerful and internet-capable as they see fit, and to focus their efforts of making a revolutionary method of control. Nintendo implemented analog control in video games, and they implemented a touch screen on the DS. Both systems (N64 and DS) were very revolutionary for their markets (console and handheld). I think that if people don't file this away as a "remote control", then it will do very well. It may not sell tons of consoles, but those who have the Revolution will snicker at the people that are whining about spending thousands of dollars on systems, controllers, cables, HDTVs, etc. And we (the "revoltionaries") will be in our little niche with a (quite possibly) $200 console with plenty of money to spend. Nintendo knows that people are spending ridiculous amounts of money just to have the PS3 or XBOX 360 well because...you know...its the PEE ESSS THREEEE. (The fact that NO games were shown at the latest PS3 blowout shows you where their priorities lie...) Nintendo doesn't rely on its rep to sell systems--they rely on AAA games, quiet + affordable consoles, and the hope that people will take the fanboy wool off of their eyes and see that Nintendo is the only console company worried about moving the video game industry forward. Their third party support seems to be better than ever, which has always been Nintendo's "achille's heel".
*End of rant that will result in 380292 posts, from normal people and fanboys alike.*
PS: I have an XBOX 360 and I love it--its really strong and there are some great games on the way (I look by the fact that it sounds like an airplane taking off). But the thing I really want is a revolution, not an evolution. Thank you if you read this all--I realize that it is long and boring for fanboys. I'm not being arrogant, I'm being honest.

The ad reminds me too much of those informercials where the "problem" is pretty damn silly and thus I'm not convinced that I need the solution.
Ad: "Don't you find it incredibly difficult to open milk cartons?" Me: "No, because I'm not an idiot."
It's the same way here. No one is all awkward and frustrated using a normal controller. So I don't think people are going to look at an ad like that and identify with the problem. "Well I'm doing quite alright with my normal controller so I don't need this." Despite what Nintendo says existing gamers don't have a problem with current controllers. Maybe some non-gamers do but Nintendo isn't going to attract anyone who actually uses controllers by acting like they're this horrendously awkward experience because they're really not.
A good ad would just show off the new found freedom of the new controller and push how it makes you feel more in the game and the immersion and such. But their shouldn't be any suggestions that existing controllers are a problem because no one who actualy uses them thinks that way. I think they should be careful not to trigger a defense mechanism. For example I like existing controllers and gaming and I felt somewhat attacked when Nintendo first suggested that it was flawed and that their new way was better. Who are they to tell me what I like? That sort of defensive attitude might come out if there's too much emphasis on how "broken" gaming is right now. People like gaming as it is and some won't appreciate Nintendo telling them otherwise. Make them interested in the Rev but don't attack what they care about.

It's not a "problem" so much as it is "boring".
I think a commercial showcasing how you use the Rev controller to finish off enemies like in Eternal Darkness would sell most people on the concept, showing the screen and the person pantomiming driving the sword into a fallen enemy at the same time.

You know a neat comercial would be to have two famous tennis stars going at it. You see the action from an over a Mike Tyson Punch-out Little Mac style. After they go intensly for a little bit it zooms out until your behind a little girl in sweats with her hair back like those stars. Using the rev controller to be intense just like the star closes to her. Then go black back ground with the rev logo and rotating in to the slick blue front light. No spoken words.
Also a neat idea would be to bring back the better commercials for some of the offered NES games. Really retro like there. Just clean them up a little and replace the only on NES stuff and with only on the Rev.
What would be really funny for us oldtimers would be if Sega puts there back catalog on the Rev for Nintendo to do a spoof off of the "Genesis does what Nintendo Don't" campaign. It be hilarious for people "in the know."

"It's not a 'problem' so much as it is 'boring'."
Okay. But most people who play games right now don't feel that way. So if Nintendo had a commercial that made reference to that those people wouldn't identify with it. Ever see a political commercial where they do that whole "John Smith wants to do this" and they're trying to make that guy look like a bad guy but it doesn't work on you because you support him and the negative things they're talking about are what you consider good things that are part of the reason why you support him? I look at an ad that says anything negative about gaming today in the same light. It may work on people who are bored with gaming or don't game but Nintendo should want people who do like gaming as is to buy a Rev too. So I think a better approach is to just show off the positives about the remote and the new opportunities it provides. If they attack "traditional gaming" they run the risk of turning it into an us vs. them scenario. Someone who likes gaming as is should also like the Rev and the ads should reflect that.

Fair enough, then use the commercial where they show fat people playing games with controllers and then thin people playing with the Revmote.
I think a lot more of them would be able to identify with THAT.
