acemnorsuvwxz    bdhk j gpqy li  t

the ones put in groups are interchangeable..if you slip one of those letters into a sentence...chances are no one would notice

So hene is tbe qnestian. Wovid you notice? yes. you would

I have heard about this study before, I had to stare at it for a little bit before I could read it.

If someone takes the result of this study to mean that spelling isn't important, they are missing the point of proper spelling and grammar. It isn't so that you can read it, it is so that you can read it well. When words are properly spelled out and in the right order and punctuated properly, it makes them easier to read. The faster you can read something, the better your comprehension, and the more likely you are to retain that information.

When one writes poorly (or in shorthand or whatever you want to call it) they are saving themselves precious little seconds, but it will take that much longer for everyone who has to read the person's writing. Proper spelling and grammar is a courtesy to others, and is a better way to make your voice heard.

Really? That's interesting. I wonder if it has to do with how a person's brain functions. How fast can you read? That might be a factor too.

I'm a fairly quick reader, and maybe I'm not faster reading the jumbled words, but I never had to sit and think about what I was reading.

I can read fast (and did when I was in college) and grasp what I was reading. With novels though I tend to read them at a moderate pace, usually reading it word by word. For some reason this way of reading sucks me into a story more then speed reading it.

Since this thread got bumped, I thought I'd drop by with an anecdote about this article. When I was in my classes in Japan, the Japanese students could not read this and were blown away that the American kids could read it like it was plain english. How 'bout that.

Well I guess it's not really that interesting. Any non-native English speakers able/not able to read this easily?

Speed reading works better for studying than it does for entertainment, especially if you're studying something which doesn't particularly interest you. You don't really need to retain what you've read in a novel but you better remember what you've been studying. It helps to find a nice quiet room to read books in because you're more likely to get distracted when you read slower.

When I was in my classes in Japan, the Japanese students could not read this and were blown away that the American kids could read it like it was plain english. How 'bout that.
It makes some sense. Because we're so familiar with the words, it's easy for us to identify what they are. I wonder if someone would be able to figure out the correct letter order for a word they've never seen before...

English is my second language, so I was able to read this without any issues.

Random Funhouse. I've been randomly stickying Funhouse threads to the front here and there. It was part of an effort to drum up more regular visits to the Funhouse. You never know which topic might show up that day. I was doing it regularly for awhile but now it has become random as well. Never know when I'll sticky a thread or how many I may sticky.
