Title: Disc space?
Post by: Chris1 on February 27, 2006, 09:57:56 AM
Ok, I was talking to a friend, and he said he was going to sell his GC to save up for a 360.  Well I told him he should just keep it because Zelda would be out this year, he then said that it wouldn't be worth it, that because of the disc space Zelda would be a short small game, like "all Gamecube games are".  Thats apparetnly another reason he's selling it, becaues he says he finishes the games too fast.  So I know there might  be truth to what he says, but how much space does a disc hold?  And will TP really be a short game like he says?  I remember reading that some GC games like Metroid and Wind Waker dont even use up the whole disc, does anyone know how much space those take up?

Hahahahahaha!  What a loon...Your friend is a pure Grade-A casual gamer...

Gamecube discs hold 1.5 Gigabytes, but Nintendo's compression tools are the best in the world...Saying that disc space affects game size is pretty laughable...

Is this 1996 again? I thought you could do multi-disc games nowadays

The wind waker was 200MB/b in size and that dosen't matter anyway since games only fill up the disk when ton of in-game movies and tp wont have them. Twilight Princess is going to be the biggest zelda ever, the gameplay time is over 100 hours, and it has more level than any zelda ever. (and 360 use the same dvd as the xbox so the games are going to be smaller on it than cube)

I never liked the phrase "I'll eat my hat."

I spend alot of money on my hats, and I would hate to have to eat one.

Let him sell his Cube...then laugh at him when Zelda comes out and is a steller game and has a lot of hype.  Look at OoT.  It was on a 256 Megabit cart I believe which is the equivilant of  32 Megabytes.  A Cube disk can hold up to 1,500 Megabytes.  1,500 MB = about 46 x 32MB (I know that the Gamecube has higher res textures and more detailed models but still this is a lot of space)  Also, Zeldas are known for their good realtime movies as opposed to space-eating FMV.

Also, TP has three times the overworld area of OOT, iirc, which is awesome.

Haha yeah, because he'd sure get a lot for a GC at this point in time. "Here's $4 in-store credit" "XBOX 360 HERE I COME!"

A lot of first party Nintendo games have FMV, but it tends to be video recorded from the game engine.

Wind Waker has a FMV gameplay video, and I believe it has FMV during the end sequence.

Anyway... it doesn't really matter.  A recent favorite game of mine is less than 1 Megabyte:
Doukutsu Monogatari (a.k.a. Cave Story)

'A Cube disk can hold up to 1,500 Megabytes. 1,500 MB = about 46 x 32MB "

You off a bit, it holds 1536MB=48 times 32

Unless Nintendo's loading the game up with FMV and a bunch of voice acting there's absolutely no reason it'd need multidisc.

PlanetDeadSystem.com
Get it right.  harhar

~~~~~
GC games max out at 1.3GB(binary), btw. Dunno if the other 0.2GB really exists.  If it did, it's either disc table-of-contents stuff or other system stuffs.
