MultiTouch Screen is interesting.. I remember when people were saying something like this would be the revolution controller

That's really quite cool, but I don't think Nintendo plans on making the DS a line like the Game Boy...it's going to be about new innovations each generation...

I thought Ds was just to stop PSP while Nintendo decides what the next GB will be like.

This one has confused me as well.
I've heard that Nintendo is still hard at work on the next GBA, whatever that will be.
Frankly, having a DS and GBA line side by side seems like an immensely foolish thing to do and verges on being the Sega dilemma where they had the Genesis, CD, 32x and saturn competing for the same marketshare.

Guess what? Nintendo always begins work on their next consoles and handhelds as soon as they put one out...Did you think they start working on them just a year before they put them out?

No.
It was the continuation of the Gameboy line which confused me. The existing product (the DS) has backwards compatibility and is something fresh and new in the handheld industry. Calling the next handheld out of Nintendo the "Gameboy _____" seems counter-productive when they've made such a name for the DS.

The next Game Boy [get it right people!! ] will probably use a completely new medium, preventing the backwards compatibility with the rest of the Game Boy line. The DS is what keeps the b.c. going IMO.
But that's just me

I do think that next year we will hear something about the new Gameboy system. I think SgtShiversBen is right and it WILL use a new format and will not be compatiable. The DS will be out to continue to create touch screen games, Gameboy Advance games, and continue to be the "Developers System" But it will be moved to becoming the small developer system with cheaper development costs with powerful results. Finally I believe the DS will be the last of the GREAT 2D systems. Unfortunately Sprite based games will be almost nonexistant after the DS generation.

Nintendo competing with itself in the handheld market is a terrible idea. It should either be the DS or the GB but not both at the same time.

yeha but ist tahtw hat all the 2rd pillar talk was last E3? They want GB, DS AND Game Cube/Revoultion all on the market at once. I thought they specificaly said DS was to combat PSP while Game Boy would live on and thats why they made the Micro, to keep Game Boy on peoples minds. However stupid it is its working to some extent, they keep selling GBAs and Micros and DS is still selling pretty good. Once DS Light comesout they should really pcik up sales also cuz its lilkely one or the other will have a price drop.

Nintendo understands the market of short-term gain. The Gameboy Advance line and system is slowing dying, but there is an untouched techno-savvy market that hasn't bought it yet. And there are devoted Gameboy loyalists that desire to have an easier Gameboy to carry around. Hence they created Micro. But, Nintendo knows Micro is a limited Product.
The same is true about the DS. Yes, the DS has been very successful, but it will not be the next Gameboy system...unless the PSP totally fails. So they Nintendo is already moving and reacting to the market as a short-term market. The new DS Lite will be released, and will be sold along side the original DS until the final batches of the original are sold. Then Nintendo will only create DS Lite for awhile, and eventually move on to the next Gameboy or release another iteration of the system.
This isn't to say the time frame for this is anytime soon. I think the DS easily has another year or two left in it. I see this system surviving until the end of 07. But you know that the GBA won't survive that long, so 2007 Nintendo better have the next Gameboy system ready for sale.
