Title: Piracy on DS?
Post by: vudu on January 31, 2006, 02:19:30 AM
Does anyone know the extent of piracy on the DS? Is it as bad as it is on GBA?
It's gotten to the point where you can't even purchase a GBA game off of eBay because over half of them are bootleg copies. Does the DS have this problem yet?

To the BEST of my knowledge, they haven't cracked it yet.
If you do a search on google, it appears they've dumped the roms, but I highly doubt they've been able to replicate and write to the NDS media format.

There are no pirate carts per se (as in, you can't copy a DS cartridge to a "blank" DS cartridge), but you can purchase hardware to play downloaded games on the DS.

Does that even work with real DS games yet?

Thanks. I was poking around eBay and I noticed a lot of Phoenix Wright carts being sold from Hong Kong for extremely cheap. With a GBA game that automatically means it's a bootleg, but I wasn't sure with a DS game.

Hmm, any mass amounts of products like that from Hong Kong definitely is suspicious. But you do know that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is a remake of a Japanese GBA game, of which there are already three games in the series? So Phoenix Wright on the GBA isn't automatically not legit if it's using the Japanese name.

Yeah, but I was looking at the DS game, not the GBA ones.

You can play commercial games that way (I read about it, but I don't do it...I don't even own any of the needed hardware), and have been able to for quite some time. DS games are only like $30 usually, it's worth the cost.

Its not hurting Nintendo's bottom line, however widespread it is. I'd consider it a non-issue.
