Looking good, but you just know she won't be able to keep all that weight off for long.

Still seems too early for a redesign, IMO. Anyway, looks good, although I actually think I prefer the current design over this lite version. I do like how this gels with the Rev controllers though.

This is perfect, not enough of a difference to annoy current DS owners, but a nice sleek upgrade to make it look more attractive on the shelves. Honestly, I don't think they can do more than this to the DS, they got its design perfect straight away, there are no glaring faults to fix like with the original GBA and it's terrible screen.
I don't feel the need to buy one, as i'm perfectly satisfied with my current DS, but this would be nice to get eventually.

By the measurements, it appears to be slightly smaller than a GBA SP, plus the extra width, of course.
I'm very glad that they moved the D-pad and buttons up higher, because their placement on the DS made it absurdly top-heavy. The reduced weight is also a big deal.
I personally think they still could've done more to make it comfortable (this probably still has the pathetic little D-pad and buttons Nintendo seems to have gotten used to), but it looks like a very good balance of comfort and appearance (the old DS had neither, IMO). And the fact that it looks like a GBA SP is a great move.
The MSRP seems a little high, and NOA in particular should be looking for a price drop, because while this redesign is very nice, I don't see it holding Sony at bay for very long, especially not if Sony has any surprises of their own in the works.
Edit: I wonder how the L&R triggers are? Hopefully they don't "pull an SP" in that regard. It seems unlikely. And where's the power button? Don't tell me they "pulled a Micro" and put it on the lower edge of the unit? And while I'm complaining, I hope they ditched the "slider" volume control and moved back to a dial.

Very nice. I approve of the microphone being placed somewhere that actually makes sense. Dear Nintendo plz bundle it with Tetris DS at launch <3 Infernal

Oh hush, GBA's screen wasn't bad. I'll take a functional non-lit GBA 2 years early over a GBA with horrible battery problems and higher inital price tag any day. Besides the issue was easly fixed, EB/GameStop sold many inexpensive worthwhile solutions.
As far as DS lite, looks good, bet it sells like gangbusters.

I never really minded the original GBA's screen.
Not that I'm complaining that the DS Lite will feature an even brighter backlit screen, woohoo!

Perhaps I should clairify my point. The SP has very good battery life and of course a nice self lit screen. What would have been the impact on storeshelf price and battery life though to impliment a true backlit system or afterburner style lighting system with the original GBA, though? At the time i'd argue considerable for both price and battery life.
As far as GBA Lighting solutions and EB, I picked up a nice mini-floruresnt food light for $15 at EB. There were many other worm/snake style lights sold as well for about $8-$10.

And ate what, 6 AA at a time in 2-3 hours? I remember it also had very unportable "PowerBar" type accessory that used 4 or 6 *D cell* sized batteries and still only lasted 6 hours on that. Like I said, i'll take an inexpensive unlit GBA that lasts 10 hours on 2 AAs over the monstrosities that were GG and Lynx.

16,800 yen? What's that in US dollars? And isn't that more than the DS originally debuted for in Japan (like 15,000 yen or such?) Did Japan ever get a price drop like we did in the US, or has it stayed at 15,000 yen?

145 USD. I am kind of dissappointed (b/c i'm cheap) that they increased the new ds's price instead of lowering the old model by 20 dollars like they normally do, but I'll get over it. Knowing this was coming, I can finally pick up a DS(L). I wonder when it will launch in the US, since Japan is the obvious and intended target market for this.

16,800 Yen ~~= 145 USD. A quick look on Amazon.co.jp says the current model DS is 14,800 Yen.

The price could be different in the US. It's smart to price it like that in Japan because they are going to sell every single unit of that thing they can produce.

Uhmm cross post where I'm too lazy to get my post from the other thread so it is quite shorter...
I hate the white. iPods are stupid. =P
I hope the buttons and d-pad don't 'click' when i push them.
So much for my faint hope of having classic gb support integrated in the new design.

Uh-oh, double post here I come...
So has anyone played their Animal Crossing or Mario Kart in a different DS yet? What exactly happens when you switch systems? Does it give you a new friend code so you'll have to re distribute it?

I'm not to high on white either. Hopefully this was just a protype model and the actual units will be in the other DS colors.

"Ian Sane is going to be pissed ...."
Since I just bought a DS a little over a month ago you would think that but I'm not. The GBA SP annoyed me because I really didn't like the original GBA screen. I just found it incredibly difficult to see anything unless I was sitting under the lamp at my desk. So I felt kind of ripped off that Nintendo allowed such a huge flaw to be released and then released what the GBA should have been later on. I got a Gameboy Player and didn't play GBA games on a portable until I got a DS.
The DS however is perfectly acceptable as is. My only beef is some issues I've had with connecting online but that has nothing to do with the system itself. I'm quite impressed with the actual system so I don't feel like Nintendo was "holding out" on a better unit this whole time or anything like that. Plus I specifically wanted the Mario Kart red DS. I'm content with the DS I have so it doesn't matter as much.
I would think that Nintendo constantly releasing "improved" versions of their portables would make customers cautious about buying one for fear that a "better" version is right around the corner. But surprisingly that doesn't seem to be that big of an issue. I still don't think Nintendo should do it but it hasn't bit them in the ass in a significant way yet.

And holding off was exactly what i did.
The question is, will Nintendo Europe decide to charge exactly the same amount as the DS Full Fat?

According to someoone in the know, the DS Lite is supposed to release in three colors: white, black & blue(or pink)
and it also releases in Japan on the same day as Children of Mana I expect DSL to be sold out for te 1st few weeks
also rumored that Tetris DS might be released on the same day as well

It looks very much like it might be too small to be comfortable now. If the superimposed comparison someone did was accurate, then the D-pad looks to be significantly smaller than the existing one, something which I don't agree with at all.

Yes, assuming that comparison is spot on, anyone notice that the d-pad seems to have shrunk on the lite version?

This may have already been said, but the labeling on both the d-pad and the buttons matches the mico almost exactly. I have a feeling they will be the exact same pieces of hardware.
The cool part is, I love the buttons on the Micro!

The power switch is now a flick-switch on the side and the stylus goes in sideways rather than in the top. Seen two colours so far including the white. White is best. I love my company!!!!"
I'm guessing this is real, though bias impression of the system.

It's really funny how people complain it's to early for a DS redesign yet no complaints went off when Apple announced the iPod Video within a month of the Nano. I bought a Nano on launch day, and would have really prefered a Video.
For whatever reason, this actually pleases me. Having said that, I'm too poor to buy it, as sexy as it may be.

Or to have to money to buy an iPod, after investing into Nintendo's products. I don't usually buy a redesign and it will be not different this time around. I suffered with the dark screen of the GBA and played with the Player when I was at home. Then I bought the DS when it came out and I have been happy with my purchase. (Which was a impulse buy.)

Hmmm...it looks like the D-Pad and buttons have changed size, making the DS Lite asymmetrical. This is a disaster.

I think the weight balancing and the edges of the system will be the most important changes. The DS has always been a little difficult to hold for long periods of time. Plus that edge on the bottom half is razor sharp. Hopefully they've addressed that on the Lite.

Who did that mock-up?
It makes me want to puke.....Oh well, it gets the job done.
I could care about what it looks like when opened. I tested out my friends DS and It is very uncomfortable in your pocket. It was also uncomfortable to play for a while with just the stylus (trauma center....I addicted).
