Title: Gear up for e3!!!!!
Post by: ThePerm on January 24, 2006, 08:38:20 PM
This years Electronic Entertainment Expo better known as E3 2006 is coming up in just 104 days
That’s only a little over 3 months from now. It starts on May 9th early in the morning.  You had better be ready for some Revolution news; it’s going to be an exciting day. Things are going to change for the Nintendo fan starting that day.

Today there was a negative news-bit coming from 3d Realms president Scott Miller.  Basically he is giving an industry standard response in how the next generation of systems will sell.  Xbox 360 and PS3 will come out pretty even with control of the video game world and Nintendo's Revolution (which is still a tentative name) coming in at a distant third. This is yet another dismal comment by yet another developer. This echoes another president from an American company that focuses on first person shooters, Epic Game’s president Mark Rein.

When allot of developers are asked what they think about Revolution, allot of developers automatically dismiss it as nothing but a mere gimmick. They mostly do this because they are already absorbed into the whole Sony, Microsoft scene. Nintendo to them is unimportant, and never will be important. They are doing their thing, and Nintendo is doing theirs. They could care less.

They exist with a skewed perspective.  Allot of companies today started out making games on the PC.  Their original intention was just to make games on the best hardware there was and the most available, which was to their logic the PC. Games on the PC had superior graphics then their console counterparts. Especially, from 1992 till 1995. You see as widely available and powerful as the PC was, console games just outsold their PC counterparts by a long shot.

Why? The problem with he PC is to play the newest best games you have to have the latest hardware. You buy your hardware play a new game, a few months later your computer specs have reached obsolescence and you can't even play any new games. This causes a bottleneck in between the purchasers’ ability to buy a game.  This hurts a PC developer’s wallet.

Then came the Playstation. Sure, consoles are not upgradeable or have all the bells and whistles of a PC, but they have two things going for them.
One, they have a long lifetime. I'm 21. 5 years is 1/4th of my whole life. I barely remember being 5.  5 years is a big fraction of my life.  It's a long time, and that’s the life of a console.
Number two. Price. Consoles are affordable.  (Or at least were)

Playstation had five good things going for it.
One: it had  "good enough” graphics. They were not as good as the N64, but they were pretty close.
Two:  CDs, Developers could be really lazy making their games. They didn't have to optimize, as much as they did on the n64...they didn’t have to save space. Plus they could port PC games over pretty well.
Three: Media, FMVs:  This added bit of multimedia added more story to games.  This gave allot of unknowledgeable gamers the impression that the system had better graphics.
Four: Less content restriction. This wasn’t really as big. In fact Nintendo released all of its restriction by the end of the generation. Still, because Nintendo had colorful Mario, and Sony had angst filled Final Fantasy 7 it made Nintendo look bad.  Add the fact Sega had already played this idea.  Truth is it was more perception than fact.
Five: Sony was fricking rich and aggressive. Sony, spewed its money forth and got exclusives, timed releases. In the 16-bit Era, Nintendo and Sega competed by matching games. IE like cards.  I raise you Donkey Kong, I raise you Vectorman. Sony just decided it would buy all the hot licensing and franchises. Nintendo, who was under the impression they were theirs, lost them.  Goodbye Castlevania, Megaman, Street Fighter, Metal Gear.

All these things appealed to the PC developer and to this day they are of this same skewed mindset. Allot of the reason why they got into the Xbox camp was because Microsoft specifically said they were going to be like Sony, flaunted their money around, and had a cute online plan. As far as Nintendo goes, they were just ignored.  They had a better online strategy then Sony, but didn’t get the online games.  Even EA who is pretty keen on Nintendo ignored their online plan when it in fact would fit perfectly with EA's old vision of their online plan.

So they don’t care, but they will. Allot of the hesitation that developers feel towards Nintendo is ignorance. Only a select few developers and media folk have had a chance to try the Revolution controller. Each one of those people have RAVED about the controller, and its possibilities.  They haven’t had a   chance to play.  This is where E3 comes in two fold.

Last year was a total disappointment.  We got to see what the system looked like, which we could have guessed by some early comments.  No new games, not even for Gamecube (well some, but not heavy hitters). What’s worse was there were some rumors of some new franchises going to be announced, that weren't.  2005 was going to be ending with Zelda, and Gamecube would pretty much die after that not allot of news, it’s as if they were seriously holding back.  Nintendo execs had been quoting that they don’t like showing games until they’re near completion.

Fast forward past Tokyo Gameshow. We all know what happened there. No games are announced, but every gamer goes gaga over the new controller (with of course the usual haters) we still have no games to see; Just some crazy video of some Japanese gamers having some crazy parties with the new system.

Here comes e3.

There are three expectations

Full Revolution unveiling
New franchises taking advantage of the controller
We get to see what the games looks like  "you will say wow"-Iwata
Games from the third parties will be announced.
All at once to provide an even bigger media bang.

Nintendo will again do as it has done in past years and definitely steal the show.

Oh, those ignorant 3rd parties who dismiss Nintendo just for being not Sony and Ms. Maybe after trying the controller out they won't be so ignorant.

Wishful thinking I suppose, but as the mask salesman says,  "have hope"

Oh and they will announce when Zelda TP comes out that GCN’s price will go down.  Effectively selling the system like hotcakes so it eclipses Xbox and puts Nintendo in some positive light among gamers.  A good game that everyone buys can change the opinion of everyone.

3rd party support for the Rev is definitely a big question mark.

I hope you are right, The Perm. I see developers like Kojima, Michael Ancel and Clover Studios do nothing but slobber praise on the Revolution controller and I can't help but have hope that the Revolution will everything I wish it will be.

Scott Miller can go eff himself

Must have playable, near-finished games with a flawless finished controller, or it will fail. must have release date + price, launch games, and final details for the download service. Mario Revolution must be there.

Maybe DS price drop, Reggie smashes a PSP onstage -- I just know he'll do it at some E3, Ill keep waiting for it.

It will be interesting to see what the non-gameplay related Revolution features will be shown.

Hopefully Zelda will be in our hands by then and we won't notice the next 3 months passing

A lot of developers have called it a "sparkling innovation"? so far it has only been Rein (who kind of retract that later) and this guy.

There has been allot of  praise,  but what im saying is those naysayers will finally get  a chance to play. According to  those like Kojima the controller is every  bit as  intuitive as Nintendo claims. E3  will  forever change  the  gamescape.

What can I say? I hope you're 100% on the money, P.

Nintendo doesn't have another "Continue" in its pocket this time, but they're definitely coming to the fight with the right stuff. The DS was the necessary step to crush the PSP: something new and innovative which even a console with more power and a bigger screen couldn't match.

Simply put, Nintendo HAD to innovate. Whether the Rev succeeds or fails, they did the right thing by giving their customers something the other companies cannot offer and by pushing game concepts in a new direction.

I haven't played any games in about a week now. I quit World of Warcraft because it's a crappy timesink and even Animal Crossing WW doesn't do it for me. I'm a hardcore gamer who burned out: I don't find games fun anymore, largely because every game out there is just an updated iteration of an existing concept. There's nothing NEW in the true sense of the word, just a variation on something we've already played.

The Rev is the last hope to pull me back into gaming (after Zelda, that is). Otherwise, god forbid, I'll have to find something else to do with my time...

"When allot of developers are asked what they think about Revolution, allot of developers automatically dismiss it as nothing but a mere sparkling innovation."

This sentence just sounds so funny with the filter on.

I don't blame third parties for dismissing the Rev.  Hell I'm a Nintendo fan and I'm sceptical as hell about it.  The thing is Nintendo right now is all talk.  They're talking about people getting bored of games and this "crisis" doesn't apply at all in North America and even regarding Japan I've never heard any other game company share the same opinion.  Nintendo is alone in this way of thinking.  They talk about how great this new controller is but where's the proof?  A few journalists have tried it out but they were just playing demos and Metroid Prime 2.  There's been no real games shown.  The only reason to believe the remote is anything worthwhile is because Nintendo says it is.

And Nintendo just doesn't have the credibility for anyone to take their word as fact.  The mess up routine stuff, their third party support is absolutely horrid, and they tend to live in their own little world completely unaware of reality.  They talked about innovation and stuff too with the Cube and all we got was connectivity which was incredibly lame.  Nintendo just has been so clueless and so spazzed for the last five years that the most logical assumption is that they don't know what they're doing.  So you can't just assume that the Rev is all cool.  They have to PROVE it and they haven't yet.  It's just the same wacky theories and secrets and "we're bigger than the industry" attitude.

If I was a third party the second Nintendo showed me that controller I'd tell them to get lost.  They're in last place.  They don't tell ME to completely rethink my way of making games.  They don't tell me sh!t because they've got no leverage at all.  Why would anyone do that kind of work for the last place console maker who has come across as a complete out-of-touch nutjob for the past few years?

This E3 is Nintendo's d-day.  If they don't blow absolutely everyone away they're screwed.  They've used up all their chances.  No one will give the Rev a chance to prove itself.  It's everything or nothing.  At least one launch game must be the absolute Game of Show like Super Mario 64 was in 1996.

You make valid points, but the proof is in the pudding, and in this case, the best pudding I've had in ages is the DS.

I'd be vastly more skeptical if the DS wasn't out there kicking ass and taking names, but seeing it and how it has done, despite the fact that it too was a gamble, I do think Nintendo may be onto something with their push for innovation.

Nintendo could become the Apple Computer of the gaming industry: they come out with the newest and best not because they want to, but because they HAVE to. That's one of many reasons I own a mac and always will, because I know for a goddamn FACT that the little guy will produce the best product because, if he doesn't, he'll be dead come next year.

MS and Sony can slack off all they want and not have a care in the world, knowing they have billions of dollars backing them, but Nintendo HAS to make the quota and I strongly believe that they're finally aware of this fact: the DS tells me that they know what they have to become in order to survive in this market.

When the curtain goes up at the Kodak, I think everyone who witnesses the show is going to come away with technology lust like no other. I say this because Nintendo shouldn't have any illusions about what needs to happen in order to stay in the home console market.

I agree on one thing: if they blow this, they can say good-bye to the home market, but I have a feeling this will not be their fate.

How many think nintendo will have alot of teen-m rated games?

with  fps, rail  shooter, and possibly strategy there will be alot of games that could change the perception of Nintendo. I'm  suggesting  with such a s trong e3 the  whole perception  of  the company could  change.

My  friend  Josh  told me the other day  "Nintend is a lot  like apple,  I really love  their products but  I probably  wouldnt  buy  them.  The new controller is awesome and it seems Nintendo is on the  right  track".  I think  he like other people is waiting  for it to become cool to  buy a  Nintendo  system.

If this were the dawn of man-kind, I bet Ian would be siding with the apes. Then again I don't blame him 100%, but I have so much faith in this. I have so many friends who have just quit gaming all together as the years went on. If Revolution games control as well as Nintendo says, I know for a fact they would come crawling back for this. This is a very drastic change from the norm, and if it makes past games feel dated... man you know everyones going to pick a Revolution up.

Got that dawn of man joke from Magneto.

I see that a lot myself. For every friend I have who at one point could be considered a hardcore gamer and still is, I have 3 who have either ditched gaming completely or own one console and buy 2-3 games per year.

Well that guy is also responsible for the Unrealy engine so it could be business motivated also. Since Nintendo usually has it own set of tool and recomended engines for third parties who need that help.

I'm gearing up for E3. I will be laying out $650, to register when my federal return comes in on the 31st. (I decided to get the Super pass since I will actually be benifited by attending the workshops and some sessions (if I remember to go in 2000 all I did was stay on the floor.).

This time I will also have a camera and a laptop coming with me, so I may be posting stuff. (I hopefully will have my server up and working by that time things keep breaking on my other computers.)

I'm also going to GDC but I doubt I will be able to have anything ready on time. But if I find anything interesting I will post it here. (It will probally already be reported on.)

I think the unveiling at the Kodak theatre will be Nintendo and Nintendo fans' finest hour.  Nintendo is putting up more hype for this year's E3 than any other...even more than the GCN and I was there for that one.  Of course, they showed some of the GCN at Spaceworld beforehand, which came away with a lot of mixed feelings as to why they didn't go with DVDs.

I don't think it is just Nintendo's status as a console-maker that's on the line here, but I really think that most hardcore gamers are just getting bored with gaming...period.  A lot of XBOX 360 friends are starting to realize that once you're over the whole graphics upgrade...that's it for the experience.  This is why I think Nintendo's controller is going to be so important.

Here's hoping Nintendo will deliver.

BTW:  Those Nintendo fans that started crying during Zelda's unveiling 2 years ago better not start crying this year...otherwise, I'm going to reach over a bitch-slap some sense into 'em.  Be happy, don't get overly dramatic...

HEHEHE!

sometimes i wonder why gamers get led along thinking that it's the graphics that make the best games?

i mean it must be some kind of disease because everyone seems to be infected.

It's all about immersion.

Immersion, IMO, is what makes games great: drowning out the world around you and just melting into the game's fantasy world is why I play games to start with.

Realistic graphics can definitely help with the immersion process. By no means are they necessary, but they can definitely help. I'd be stunned if I didn't find Twilight Princess more immersive than WW because of the graphical style difference.

Also, the Rev's controller is designed to maximize immersion by removing yet another barrier: the joystick. What makes you feel more like you're "in" the game, pressing the A button, or swinging the controller through the air as though it were the handle of your sword?

Visuals are  only a small part of the immursion process, but they can help. Quite a few SNES games are more immursive then some of the games this generation with "realistic" graphics.

Visuals ARE a part of immersion, but only when they meld together in the right way...Looking at pretty much every 360 game so far, they mix high-poly models with current-gen textures, giving the games a rather grotesque look...Eye candy it is not... =\

not having hi-definition is going to mean were going to have better looking textures. Because that  texture mapping isnt going to be wasted trying to make it fit on a huge  screen and look good. We'll have alot more variety and layering for textures,  and faster loading times.

" not having hi-definition is going to mean were going to have better looking textures. Because that texture mapping isnt going to be wasted trying to make it fit on a huge screen and look good. We'll have alot more variety and layering for textures, and faster loading times"

I'll give you the load times, because every Nintendo system I've seen has strived to cut loading down to minimal or nil.  However as far as graphical performance is concerned, that's hard to say given that we don't really have the full specs of the system yet.   I will say though that based on previous systems, the tech has managed to stay with and at times exceed the competition despite the final specs not looking like that on paper.  If the Revolution is designed in this line of thinking you'll probably be right, but as for right now it's all up in the air.  And there's no way we've seen the best that the 360 will be able to do yet.

Because a lot of SNES games have better visuals than a lot of games this generation, it's graphic power that usually has nothing to do with immersion.

If peope only cared about graphics then the NES would have failed since it was inferior to SMS and just slightly above 7800.

Genesis and SNES wouldnt have been so close because genesis did have better graphcis but all peoel noticed was SNES had more colors and Mario.

N64 would have killed PS1 and Dream Cast would have sold a lot better than it did and NO Gameboy woudl have ever sold.

People really need to look at the past and realize that graphics have NEVER sold a system.

Even this last gen PS2 didnt have as good GFX as Xbox but it still out sold Xbox AND GC combined. Look also at DS hwo its GFX look bad compared to PSP and yet it still sells in the millions.

well, I've heard word that, if you pay the big bucks, the e3 staff stops caring so much about industry creds. The big bucks, in this case, being about $1000+ for me and a friend. Add in expenses, and we could end up spending a good $5000.

How am I going to get $5000? Well, I was thinking I would whore myself out to 50 fat chicks for 1000 bucks a piece. Or 5 REALLY fat chicks.....

I actually do have the credentials but I couldn't stand E3 unless I was going there to promote my game (which will likely never happen).

IMHO, seeing and trying the stuff firsthand is cute and all, but it's not worth the air travel and crowds when I'll own it in a few months anyway. Also, all of the news and media will be available online mere hours after it's presented at E3 and I can't see going through all the hassle just to be a few hours ahead of the internet.

You're the ONLY gamer in the universe who feels like that. Trust me.

I can legitimately say I feel that way [how SB said], cuz I've been there.  However, going with friends (and essentially partying at E3 like it was a geeky-techie amusement park) has MUCH more worth than going solo.

It's not a sentiment which I expect to find shared among many.

It's just that I hate crowds and air travel with a burning passion. If I could drive to E3, I'd be able to handle it.

That, and there's no way I'd be able to escape my job for long enough.

I'm going!  Already got my hotel reserved and everything!

This'll be my 3rd....I get to go off the strength of having a song on the LA RUSH soundtrack, so I'll have a Midway badge.  I LOVE HARDWARE YEARS!!

Has anyone designated a meeting place or anything yet (I need to read this whole thread)?  I think with would be cool to put some faces with the ranting!

This will be my fifth E3 coming up...I was going all three days for the first 3...but now I'm down to just going to one and getting it all in on the first day...more giveaways (t-shirts, demos, etc.).  I missed it last year, but with the REV, there's no way I'm going to want to miss...especially with the news of Red Steel.  There's got to be more!

You said it!  I went last year, and it was okay....the only thing that REALLY made it worthwhile was the Twilight Princess demo....and Odama was cool too!  When the doors first opened, I made a mad dash for Ninty's booth and got into the Zelda line.....only waited about 30 mins.

The 360 failed to impress me, and I refused to wait in line to watch a PS3 "most likely" tech demo, that I saw lineless at CES anywayz.

Last year everybody had their PSP's out while waiting the 1st day for the doors to open, playing RR and Lumines....it's gonna be nice to see the role reversal and all the DS systems playing Mario Kart and Metroid Prime Hunters and Tetris!!

This will be my 3rd year going.  A meetup for me would be slim to none chance since I will be working crazy the first 2 days, and some the third.  Most of day 3 will be just free time that I will have to use to catch up on all the things I didn't get to do when I was working before.

I was just reading S_B's comments about E3 and how you guys reacted to that.

While S_B's opinion is far from the gamer norm, he does have a point in that it makes no difference whether you are there or at home. If we were living in an age where the internet didn't exist and there was no way to send up to the minute information, then going to E3 would almost be obligatory. But since we do get all the info we relly don't miss out of much.

On the other hand, S_B, the reason many are looking forward to E3 is because of the thrill of the show. Like being there, actually being there when they make a big announcement, to see the games long before they are release, to meet the celebrities behind the game and many, many more. So to an extend, going to E3 is more than just trying out games for some.

So E3 is like the ying and yang. On one side, it isn't that big of a deal because we always get the info. On the other, it's an unique experience.

On the contrary, going to E3 means you get to actually play (some of) the games instead of just hearing about them. I would say that does make a difference.

Going to E3 (from what I've heard) also means you get to wait in line for said games... You might acually get away with more information in less time by hearing about it an hour late over the internet.

The finest or the worst, depending on what Nintendo will actually do on the conference.

Not to sound negative, but I hope the conference meets some of the hype it has gathered for over a year now. I would hate it if after all the hype, speculation, whining and bitching the conference ends up being not as impressive as it should've been.

My final words going into E3:

Nintendo is either brilliant or crazy.

Their goal is to create a new standard of play and a new standard of thinking -- Standard controllers vs. Wiimote. Next Generation vs. New Generation.

They're riding high on the DS right now, and they should be. They could change the game because they're in a position of power to be able to. But their collective egos better be in check. The markets are clearly separate and they're not in a position of power in the console race. If they try to stir things up, they just may find themselves looking at the tail lights of their competitors for a 3rd generation in a row.

E3 won't answer any questions about Nintendo's long term future. E3 preaches to the choir. How excited *we* get based on what they show doesn't matter one bit. It'll be history that tells us whether Nintendo's Wii is to Apple's iPod or if the Wii is to Apple's computer platform.
