Title: ATI Talks About Revolution
Post by: WindyMan on January 16, 2006, 06:54:11 PM
An interview doesn't really reveal anything new, but you're still going to read it anyway, aren't you?

Revolution Report was doing the rounds at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last week, and caught up with John Swinimer of ATI.

The conversation that followed was about ATI's involvement with the Hollywood graphics chip that will help to power Nintendo's upcoming Revolution console.  Here's a passage from the interview:

Revolution Report: A number of Web sites have inferred that Revolution will be significantly inferior graphically. While it certainly seems like Revolution won't output in HD, is it safe to assume that Hollywood will not feature a comparable polygon count or the same amount of graphical effects as the Xbox 360's GPU?

Swinimer: What I can say is that ATI is focused, as is Nintendo, in making [Revolution] a great, gaming entertainment platform. I know that a lot of journalists are very focused on specs. It's the big thing; as a geek, I look for that too. The key thing to keep in mind is that Nintendo, with ATI's help, is trying to create a game console where you don't have to look at [specs].

Revolution Report has the rest of the questions and answers, which also go into the differences between PC and console graphics, and ATI's involvement with the GameCube.  Check it out.

I infer from this interview that the Rev graphics are going to be smaller on specs, but are going to pump out a lot of bang for the buck. Lean and Mean!

x64? You mean 64bit 8086 compatible? IBM doesn't make those.

Ok. I am not sure if anyone remember's this, however. I recall someone stating that confidential documents were intercepted in route to Nintendo of Japan.  These documents stated that Nintendo had found a way to reduce processing power down to and the like 1/4.  I don't recall the exact specifics, but, if Nintendo has honestly figured this out ... then we may be in for a treat..maybe more so then we expect.  Just putting 2 and 2 together here and so far when applying the response from ATI to this old news it = 4.

No, that was the GameCube.

Nintendo has since demoted SGI/ArtX/ATi's job down to "irrelevant" status, and John Swinimer is just saying that, despite being forced to work out of a broom closet, ATi still tries to take pride in their work for Nintendo, and will be working hard to do as much as possible with what little they're given.

there are  some  interesting tidbits about standards..things that drive up the price. A custom  chip is non-standard.
