Title: Market the Revolution: What's the slogan?
Post by: Nile Boogie on December 12, 2005, 01:19:12 PM
The marketing almost writes itself for the Revolution. Can you come up with a slogan that doesn't sound cheesy and forced? I didn't see a thread on this. I like:
"The Revolution, because 'evolution' works too slow." "Are you brave enough for change?" "Become you're own Revolution."
What else you folks got?

Well, it's kind of impossible to make a campaign until they announce the system's actual name.

There are a few things I think should be avoided at all costs regarding any slogans.
1. No "either or" stuff. That would be saying the competition offers this but we offer that. It can sound good in theory but the problem is then it makes people choose. It makes people think about what the competition offers and Nintendo is the odd man out and their "method" is probably going to be seen as the weird one. Plus this kind of wording assumes that you agree with Nintendo and that the PS3/X360 way of doing things is bad. A lot of people think it's pretty good. Saying Nintendo is offering something totally different might turn them off. I want "better" but I don't want "different". That suggests what I like from before isn't there. Change is scary. Don't directly mention change.
2. Don't make out that gaming as it exists is broken. I don't think it is and a lot of people don't think it is. We don't need two-failures-in-a-row old fuddy duddy Nintendo telling us otherwise. Gaming as is is very popular and it's best that the Rev doesn't look like it's going to fix what ain't broke. I don't even think the "new way of gaming" would be good. The "future of gaming is here" isn't so bad. But don't make out like existing gaming sucks because it doesn't.
3. No challenges to the consumer. "Are you brave enough?" "Do you dare?" Stuff like that. I think the Rev concept is pretty scary so don't draw attention to how scary and unknown it is. It should be the opposite, very welcoming. After all it is supposed to attract those who are "intimidated" by gaming so adapting it should be easy not some brave challenge.
4. No "who are you?" The only people who identify with Nintendo's franchises are existing fans and there's no point in targeting them with marketing. Nintendo is often accused of rehashing and I felt the whole "who are you?" campaign just confirmed that for everyone. Plus it was such a flop for the Cube I think it would so stupid to continue to use it. Plus the Rev is supposed to be innovative. How can it be innovative if it's just the same games from 1985 all over again? If you asked a gamer today "Who are you?" They would respond "Master Chief" or "that guy from GTA". Nintendo sadly hasn't been relevant for quite a few years now so few gamers are really going to associate themselves with characters they're barely familiar with or they associate as childish.

The Revolution has Begun Game Over Innovation Included Be Original What Next? The Rules Have Changed Start A Revolution (transition to power button)
graphic transitions on the "on" letters -- Innovation > Immersion > Revolution
A cool visual would be to make it seem like an underground movement set in a post-apocalyptic climate. Silhouettes of helicopters in the sky, the military setting up wired fences, people trying to break through or climb over them. Police dogs barking. Looks like a riot scene. Shots of people running into an abandoned factory. Cut to shots of people moving their controllers around (exaggerated movements like in the Revolution teaser) mixed with game footage. Cut to logo. A little dramatic, but it's cool.

They could have a commercial for the download service that's a crazy montage of old Nintendo commercials and slogans.
"Now you're playing with power!" "...Super Power!" "The Best Play Here!" "Play It Loud!" "Change The System!" "Get N Or Get Out!" "Who Are You?" etc.
Especially the memorable NES and Super NES ones (except maybe the Super Metroid-only "The Best Play Here" that didn't last very long). The montage could have quick cuts of recognizeable games, and memorable commercials like the two kids playing The Legend Of Zelda (which is apparently very rad).
As for the Revolution itself? Something short and to the point. Like "Hands On"...I dunno.

I don't believe Revolution will be the final name, but it may be in the slogan. The present slogan focuses on the gamer; I believe that they will continue with this type of theme as the code name suggests.

I would like a whole lot of simple Slogans describing ingame actions with the Tagline "Feel the Game."
Here is an example.
Toss, Flip, Cut, Blend, Cook...
"FEEL THE GAME"
Real Chef Cooking Revolution.
Or another:
Grind, Jump, Spin, Flip
"Feel the Game"
Skate! Revolution

Me and my friends came up with the idea that Nintendo could incorporate the DS into their advertising and also start a contest campaign in the process with the slogan...
Do Something Revolutionary
The contest ideas with such a slogan practically describe themselves.

What do you want to overthrow today?
Okay, no.
Showing the rod. This is your weapon. Make it what you want it to be. Show various bits of gameplay footage where it's immediately apparent what the rod does, perhaps show a few addons with appropriate footage.
Or:
Rod with shell. Want to take off the kid's gloves? Remove shell from rod, show gameplay footage.
Or, what Nintendo will do:
Showing lots of people doing things with the rod instead of the appropriate tool (e.g. fishing, shooting, cooking), show the words "coming [releasedate]" and then the logo, no gameplay footage at all...
Yes, I have a feeling that's what Nintendo will do.

I like Spak-Spang's "Feel the Game" slogan. That's pretty good. It's short, catchy, and accurate. And at the same time it's all very postive.
Plus it works as a universal Nintendo slogan because it fits the DS as well.

Well done, I wish they would get that song.
Perm, you need to show people in the throws of playing it after the hand picks it up, particularly the scenes they showed where the gamer was shooting or swinging a sword; anything that has impact and can be edited together with a rising beat.
I would probably use different text, maybe even some of the language from the song.
You say you want a revolution?
We all want to change the world.
You say you got a real solution?
We'd all love to see the plan.
Change the world.
Free your mind.
My favorite part of the song has always been the opening guitar, that is probably when the system should be shown rather than text. Samus should be timed to land right at the point of the thump and scream. Right now you have the scream and the thump during the scene with the console and controller.
I still think the console should be called NE5 or maybe ONE5 one5//Revo OVER
one5 over
O//Omega V//Nintendo E//Entertainment R//5ystem

The DS is marketed in the UK (but in no other region) as "Pick up and Play" so that'll instantly kill any worldwide Revolution marketing connected to the DS and touch me.
Slightly in the same vein, as it's immersive the slogan should change depending on the game footage involved (but still remain tongue-in-cheek):
Super Monkey Ball: "Roll me" Feel the Magic: "Caress me"
I can't think of anything else.

That last one reminds of those car ads. I'm not a car person so I forget who it's for. Toyota? VW? I dunno. The ads usually end with "shift_(?)" where (?) is a series of words that they cycle through, and I think they're different per ad. Or, you know, like those anti-drug ads. "_____: my anti-drug."
So there could be something like, "How do you want to play?", but in specific cases they could just say "How do you want to _____?" where they throw in verbs like "explore", "race", "battle", "shoot", etc.
It would show that the games are a different experience from each other and definitely from the competition.

They should go with something kind of funny. Like where a dad is trying to change the channel with the controller and can't get it to work and then he accidently turns on the Rev and the next thing you see is him playing SMB with the controller on it's side, and then it cuts to him playing something new like MP3. Then it says, "It won't change the channel, but it will change the way you play games."
And/or something with older people playing old games and then it cuts to them playing new games and it says, "fall in love again."
Title: RE: Market the Revolution: What's the slogan?
Post by: Spak-Spang on December 15, 2005, 07:21:41 AM
MrMojoRising: Although funny, I don't think you want to present the controller as baffling an adult...since Nintendo is trying to get that market.
If anything, they need to show adults playing games that would interest them. I think Nintendo needs to release a game that has about 20 small card games, puzzle games, simple action games, strategy games and what not that would really get Adults interested in playing the Revolution. The controller is perfect for those types of games...and they could pack it in since development costs for a game like that would be pretty low.
Anyway, show a bunch of adults playing games like that. Or perhaps an old Grandmother playing a game like that...then switch views to a young daughter and her parents. "Geez, Grandma beat me again dad." Followed by Mom saying, Ok. My turn.
Something to show older people having fun.

"And/or something with older people playing old games and then it cuts to them playing new games and it says, 'fall in love again.'"
You got to careful there. You don't want the Rev to look like a geezer console. As a gamer I'm a little threatened by this non-gamer approach and I imagine that if they pushed that too hard in their ads other gamers might feel the same way. I don't just mean like hardcore gamers, I mean just people who plays games period right now.
I think it's important that the Rev looks appealing to all ages but is not advertised in such a way that it looks either like a family console (ack! The dreaded you-know-what image) or for old people. They have to show teenagers and young adults and pre-teens playing it too and playing it by themselves or with people their own age. Yeah the console is for everybody but the truth is people between 12 and 20 don't necessarily want to play with their grandparents and parents. Show different people enjoying themselves but not all together. Otherwise it looks like a family console.
Title: RE: Market the Revolution: What's the slogan?

Well, I think Nintendo needs a massive ad campaign that targets various target groups. Use MTV and Comedy Central and do very edge commercials for the young adults and teenagers.
Prime Time and Day Time use the more adult friendly commercials we have been discussing. That is the perfect place to put the "adverb"-Feel the Game commercials as well.
Then on Cartoon Network and Kids WB and such do commercials that will appeal to all ages and kids. Basically what Nintendo is already doing.
The key is completely different style commercials and ad slogans and campaigns need to be used to attract the different demographics.

Sorry to go off subject here, but the person who mentioned "Play It Loud" reminded me of the best Nintendo commercial of all time (besides the one where the guys eats everything at the diner and explodes...I believe it was a commercial for Yoshi's Island). Anyway, it was back in the SNES "Play It Loud" days, and it was a compilation of new SNES games, the biggest being Mortal Kombat II, where it showed Reptile's fatality in the commercial, the music was a song from the Butthole Surfers, I don't know the name, but there words mentioned something like "I wanna know who was in my room last night, who the Hell was in my bed". Best. Commercial. Ever...the original Super Smash Bros commercial was cool too.

as long as nintendo can generate buzz on the Good Morning America, CNN HEadline News, Regis, maybe the oprah giveaway to wow some of the older folks, then highlight the good stuff during Adult Swim, Fox Sunday Lineup, Comedy Central, MTV.
edit- oh if we're going to talk about classic commercials you gotta note the fun-colored N64 commercials. You know, with the armies.

They should develop a Back to the Future game exclusive for the Revolution with Steven Spielberg and EA just so their first commercials can open up with the scene in which Marty shows Doc the video from thirty years later. In the video Doc says the plutonium creates the 1.21 gigawatts (pronounced jigawatts in the movie) required for time travel.
In the scene in 1955 Doc has Marty rewind the tape to hear what he said again and then says, "1.21 jigawatts? Great Scott!" So I would open with Doc saying that.
The captions would read something like,
"It is time to go back, to the future..."
"coming 12/1"
I would get both the original actors to voice the characters in the game; and I would not do the train, somehow they have to have the dalorian again. Maybe it would have to follow the movies, but my opinion is that Marty is a messiah character, he is metaphorical, his tale is allegorical; the dalorian is a literal vehicle for the tenor. Spielberg is a genius.

I could see an underground campaign being here in America: "Join the Reggielution" With Reggielution shirts and the like. Sort of like how Winter-een-mas is a holiday made up be a web comic and is observed.
In the Main stream I really don't know. I could see them doing the bit where someone is say fishing. Looks like it and everything but then you hear the Husband calling for dinner. It then flashes to a wife holding the controller like a fishing poll on the couch and the husband wearing an apron, manly but not cheesy apron, with dinner and they go over she goes over there. At that point you it starts to super impose the logo and the slogan and you can still see the couple in the background, fuzzily, and you can hear trailing in the background:
Husband: Honey, I didn't think you liked fishing. Wife: Oh, well... It seems I like to fish. But I'll leave the real trips to the boys, mess and all.
It would be an interesting spot. But I think it be to similar to the Playstation approach.

I still can't think of anything better than "When the Revolution Comes, You Will Not Be Spared".
I'd like to see something slapping the competition as overpriced too.
Maybe launch an uber bundle with 2 games (maybe SSBnline and Zelda: TP for the Cube) and 2 controllers and a memory card for $199
Microsoft Xbox 360... 2 games... 2 controllers... and a memory card $590 (I'm assuming a small price drop when the Ps3 launches)
Sony Playstation 3... 2 games... 2 controllers... and a memory stick... $650
Nintendo Revolution... 2 games... 2 controllers... and a memory card... $199
You do the math.
Title: RE:Market the Revolution: What's the slogan?
Post by: Darkheart on December 29, 2005, 06:58:45 PM
Lol i did the math and .................
50 dollars for LOZTP 50 dollars for SSBO 30 dollars for extra controller 20 dollars for memory card
total =
150 dollars
-199 price line
Nintendo Revolution = 49 dollars . . . . .
I realize I guessed those prices but I think I was quite accurate
Title: RE: Market the Revolution: What's the slogan?
Post by: jasonditz on December 29, 2005, 07:08:50 PM
I'm assuming that LOZ: TP will have been out for at least a few months at the time (if this was an Xmas promo, it should've been out for the better part of a year by then), so it's probably ready for a price drop... especially with the next generation console out and all.
I was guessing the barebones console as $99 and assuming they'd give you a deal on a bundle like that:
and figure they'd be willing to pack in a last generation game to get people to pick up these bundles
Of course if the console is $149, they could do the same bundle at the $249 price point... still beats the crap out of the competition, but it doesn't have the same ring that a sub $200 bundle does.

I was remembering the idea for the Beatles Revolution song, and I thought that although appropriate perhaps it isn't the best song for Nintendo to use.
1)The cost to get a Beatles song in a commercial is going to pretty high. 2)It really isn't an upbeat song, but a contemplative song. It's for showing a concept or a system. Not for showing fun.
Anyway, I heard a song that I think is fun and would work for Nintendo advertising IF they keep the name Revolution.
Artist: Jars of Clay Song: Revolution.
The chorus is really the hook for the commercial:
so if you know the words then try to sing along and when you get the beat grab a hammer bang a gong cause you don't got to fight or make yourself belong to be a revolution, alright! to be a revolution, alright!
I see a commercial that plays off of Nintendo's rich history and new vision.
The commercial will flash between classic Nintendo games and new Revolution game footage, and shots of people/families/friends playing with the Revolution Controller much like the teaser video Nintendo released earlier does.
The idea is to capture a spirit of energy and fun.
Then the end can be the tag line. "FEEL THE GAME."
If you need to use the verses of the songs two of them also work well for commercials.
1) If you wanna learn to play the rock guitar then throw down your guns you gotta be a star you gotta begin with who you know you are to be a revolution
cause the time is right to cross that line to let love find a way
or
2) Peace takes a taxi to the underground I wanna love the world but I don't know how I blame it on the DJ playing all the fast songs Ain't spinnin anything I can sing along
The first verse I typed really shows off the idea remembering yourself and remembering that games are about fun, and embrassing the joy of games again.
The second verse, kinda plays off the direction games have been going. Slowly dying because of complexity and sameness. Nothing is inspiring and you want to love gaming, but its not catching your eye anymore.

Wow, Spak, this song owns. Yeah, that would be a pretty amazing commercial. But I think that every commercial Nintendo does for the Revolution should end in the same way: just like the teaser ended, with the phone ringing (the distraction can be different every commercial, not necessarily a phone ringing) and the person pressing power. The TV goes to a black screen. The camera zooms in on the black screen until all you can see is black. Then "Nintendo Revolution: Feel the Game" fades in. These commercials should begin airing 1.5-2 months before release. Below "Feel the Game" would be a price point and release date. I say no game footage in the actual system commercials, just controller footage, much like the teaser. Game footage should be in the actual game commercials, which should air just as frequently, if not more so.
EDIT: Oh my God Jason, that owns all slogans. "When the Revolution comes, you will not be spared." That would be great. I think the actual slogan should be "Feel the Game" but your idea could be used as a theme for commercials (much like "Who are you?" which was priceless).

How about this:
Open to an angry crowd of demonstrators in a parking lot somewhere... chanting something (maybe "Revolution")... all of them are wearing Mario-style hats and gloves. Picketers with signs showing interlocking revolution controllers.
Flash to a dark brick wall with a sign that's a little too dark to read... cop cars race past and the lights from the car light up the sign, a Mario-gloved fist with the word "Revolution" under it.
Then a shot of a guy in a Mario suit (like they had at E3) playing some unseen revolution game using the controller as a gun. Sounds of gunfire and shrieking in the background, fade to black
White text:
Just a friendly warning to our competition...
*fades*
When the Revolution comes, you will not be spared!
*gunshot*
Then flash a release date and MSRP for the console...

Get rid of the Mario suit and that might actually work. :-P

Another idea:
Ninjas engaged in some well-choreographed, really complex swordfight. Midway through the commercial, start the view rotating around the scene. When the view is from the opposite site, the same battle is going on, only the ninjas are weilding revolution controllers instead of swords... when it rotates back, they're swords again.
End commercial with revolution controller view (not swords) and have one of the combatants take a minor cut on the cheek from the other...
Flash to a Revolution logo.
---
Other ideas:
Second commercial with the Ninjas where they're fighting and one gets disarmed, pulls nunchucks off the wall... you can see where that's going...
How about a slap at the competition: Maybe "Play in their world, compete in ours" commercials for SSB Online?

In a perfect world, the commercial would star a guy in a giant Revolution costume that talks trash.
"Yeah, I was hanging out with the 360 the other day, and he said something about you guys not knowing how to party?"
"The PS3 experience is so amazing! Whenever I play it, I really see the broken dreams."
"I'm not saying Ken Kutaragi is insane... but he did once greenlight the PSP."
"Xbox 360: 512 MB of POS-RAM."
"I really liked Perfect Dark Zero the first time I saw it... when it was called Rogue Agent.
But this isn't a perfect world, so I guess it should be something hip to get the attention of the yuppie audience, but at the same time, it should remain Nintendo enough not to alienate the current fans. How about something like this...
A blank white room. Up creaps the Revolution controller (kinda like the TGS video). Then we zoom into the HOME button and up starts a gameplay montage. A good 45 seconds of different games. Then we fade back into the controller, and then back to nothingness. Then the slogan appears:
"Revolutionary Control."
Kind of cheesy, but it gets the job done.

"Arm Yourself" isn't too bad, actually. If they are keeping the name "Revolution", it fits very well, in fact.
I think somebody already mentioned a commercial with a sword-fighting scene where it cuts between them using actual swords and Revolution controllers. With the "Arm Yourself" thing, they could do that as well as other things - for some reason I can't get the idea out of my head of dueling cowboys about to do a quick-draw with Revolution remotes in their holsters. But as it's more than a gun it would only be one of a few commercials or mixed in a montage with scenes like the swordfighting. (After that banned Xbox 360 controller where everyone's got their fingers like imaginary guns at each other, guns probably won't be a focus at all...though Duck Hunt would be a very good example for the retro downloads...)
The slogan might not go too well with a cooking game, but I think a cooking game is a hard sell...I could be wrong, though. It would be neat to see vegetables being cut with the controller and food being tossed by an imaginary wok while someone's holding the controller where its handle would be, though.

The slogan will be "Nintendo Kickin Ass and takin names"
The Logo will be Reggies face holding a Revolution Logo
THe commercial will be 360 and PS3 sitting in the park duking it out and Rev will come onto screan all giant sized and step onto the other 2. Then show some footage of games and gamers using the revmote.
Or they could use Perms commercial it was cool.
EDIT, this was ajoke post incase yu didnt notice

Good concepts people. What about " Get in the game" or "Play it right" "Nothing else is better" put Jackie Chan in there playing a fighting(this would be for Asian or maybe US ads) game doing some trademark stuff with the Rev controller. "The right way to play" I like " Feel the game" though that was a good one. I could come up with more but i'll stop.

Check it out:
Two kids, one a boy, one a girl, a teenage boy and their grandma sitting in the living room playing video games.
"I'm tired of playing games with this regular boring controller." - Boy
"I'm tired of playing games that are made for boys only." - Girl
"What do all those buttons do?" - Grandma
"Games were better back in the day." - Teenager
Then the Revolution controller automatically appears in all of their hands and of course they are all blown away by this amazing device. A narrator (preferably that fast talking dude who did all those Micro Machines commercials back in the day) explains the jist of the Revolution controller, says that it's so simple your grandparents could use it, and that it's still capable of playing games the regular way, then the commercial shows clips of Revolution games including Animal Crossing Revolution and Nintendogs Revolution, and then it shows the system playing classic NES games.
Then the girl asks "I bet this costs a fortune!" and the narrator replies, "Only if you consider a price under $200 a fortune!" And then they're all shocked again.
The slogan would be "A Revolution That Everyone Wants to Be Part Of."
Then the girl says "Grandma, I think your urine bag is leaking." And then they all laugh playfully as the commercial fades out.
THEN NINTENDO SELLS EIGHT HUNDRED MILLION UNITS AND PWNS EVERYONE ELSE.

Thanks. And it works on a number of levels-freedom from the standard controller, freedom from wired controllers-freedom from the archaic console-and what is the main aim of a Revolution? Freedom! The last minute of that song while kids and adults alike break the chains from the oppressors, (ie old consoles) and drag them through the streets, and walk towards the blue light while Zach screams Freedom! would bring a tear to my eye.

Somehow I don't think Zack would go along with it. The rest of the band probably wouldn't mind, as they've already practically sold their souls.

No sh!t. When I finally found out what broke up the band, I was SO F#@KING PISSED! Zach had every right in the world to split up the band.
Anyway, as much as I hate to say it, Vudu is right. Zack would definetly be offended by something as small as a mere offer.
I'm trying to think of another band that could provide the same atmosphere that RAGE does.......I can't think of one. Is there really no song that could rival "Freedom" as the perfect song for the commercial?
.......damn I love RAGE.....

Well, to be honest, The Clash were on about the same plain as Rage, and they are featured upon every stinking commercial and every film soundtrack. Plus the other members of the band may have the right ...meaning we don't know how the song rights shook out after the break up. Writing the lyrics to a song does not actually mean you own it.
I could make the commercial myself, actually.....maybe I will. I just got my new Panasonic camera anyway.
Death or Glory and I'm So Bored With The USA would be good Clash songs to use.

Kick-ass instrumental. The title is of course a subtle reference to their system. Should be the primary song in commercials. (Credit to WOXY for that one.)

I assume all members of the band have equal rights to the song. But generally, all four would have to agree in order to do anything with it, i.e. no commercials unless everyone says it's okay. Sorta like the situation with The Doors and car commercials.

I'd go with "Complete Control" if Nintendo was using a Clash song. Not only is it a rockin' tune, the title is more then apt when it comes to the Revolution.
