Title: Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble!
Post by: Rhoq on December 10, 2005, 02:25:50 AM
I know that between the Mario Kart & Animal Crossing madness, Viewtiful Joe kind of fell through the proverbial cracks and got lost in the shuffle. I picked up the new VJ game for the DS last night and so far I think it's pretty good. The graphics don't look bad at all (but definitely not as good as the GameCube) and the gameplay is very close to the console experience.

The only true problem I have with the DS game is that Capcom threw in some touch screen stuff (during the cut-scenes where you have use the touch screen to move a film slide away to view the next slide and continue with the story) just for the sake of using the touch screen. Cut scenes feature no voice-over work, so you'll be reading a lot of text. The familiar VJ soundtrack and voice samples during the game are all there (Henshin A Go-Go, Baby!)

The new "scratch" VFX power isn't bad, but it feels a bit forced into the game. Tthe other new touch screen VFX powers, "split" and "slide" work very well and are highly intuitive. Overall I'd recommend this to Viewtiful Joe fans. His first DS outing is quite solid.

DS owners that don't like to touch their screens without the stylus or thumbstrap, beware. VJ:DT pretty much requires you to smudge your screen up in order to use the new VFX powers.

Is it about as challenging as the Cube version? Or has it been toned down a bit for the portable? There are so damned many good games on the DS. I'm going to explode.

I've only played through the first level (which was broken into about 20 stages over about an hour or so of combined gameplay). I'm playing through on the "kids" setting. It seems to be slightly less challenging than the console games, but not by much. The first level seemed to be more of a trainig exercise to get used to the DS controls and eventually learn to use your new touch screen VFX powers (which play a heavy role in the latter stages of the game's first level). The individual stages are definitely shorter than on the consoles, which is probably why there are more of them.

I haven't started playing through the 2nd level yet, but I have a feeling that the difficulty level might increase a bit now that Joe is more comfortable with his new powers.

Holy crap! The theme from Resident Evil 2 is used during the 2nd level!!! RE2's music is some of my favorite ever from a game and it sounds great on the DS. Ordinarily I probably would've called Capcom lazy for recycling music from a different franchise to fill-out the Vewtiful Joe DS soundtrack, but it actually fits the scenario rather well.

Man, now I can't wait for Resident Evil: Deadly Silence to come out. Damn you Capcom. You probably did this deliberately, knowing it would get me all excitied. you're such a tease!

There are WAY too many great games out right now.  This, Sonic, Castlevania and Mario Kart DS plus Mario & Luigi...I never thought I'd say this, but I'm not even going to bother with Animal Crossing, too many other titles out.

Viewtiful Joe, I feel, is a better platform choice than Sonic Rush. Rush is way too short and very easy. The only difficulty comes from the cheap deaths that are abundant through the game.

Yeah.  Like a kid coughing alot in a school class, I'm gonna stay away from Animal Crossing a while until it gets more reviews.  I want to get it, but I'm not sure if I will like it as much.  It will seriously be a damper on my masculinity though.  Some kid walks by: "Whacha playin there?" Me: "Animal Crossing.  I'm a guy in a village that does errands for animals and writes letters and digs up stuff and draws oh so fancy patterns".  Kid: "uhhh..cool" ::runs away very fast, fearing is anal region was in danger::

I have this game and I was very surprised with it.  The touch screen controls feel weird (because I'm new to them) but they make for great combos that you never thought were possible.  I cannot believe what Lasse Pallesen said about this game.  As long as you use your left hand for the touch screen functions then you'll be fine.
