Title: Kid Icarus
Post by: Talon on November 22, 2005, 09:48:41 PM
Is it just me or did I miss the announcement of a next gen Kid Icarus??
In todays Xbox 360 is Not a Revolution article by Matt Casamassina point #8
Quote And the same is true for all of Nintendo's major games, from Mario to Pikmin, F-Zero and Kid Icarus.
Matt mentions Kid Icarus as if it were a 'major' game. Now I dont know about you but I definately wouldnt not call Kid Icarus a major game considering there hasnt been a Kid Icarus title since the days of the nes and only the older or hardcore nintendo gamers probably know it exists.
So naturally one could be lead to believe that there is a good chance we will see a revival of Kid Icarus in some form on the revolution. WHOOT!
I could also be clutching at straws here as he might be refering to the download service, but im sure there are still a few fans out there that would like a new Kid Icarus title.

Very interesting...I guess we'll see, eh?

In an interview with Miyamoto, Matt asked about Kid Ikarus, and Miyamoto said it could be posible.
Shigeru Miyamoto: Well, I'm actually working really closely right now with the director of the [original] game. Now, whether or not when we get the Revolution all set up and everything is finalized, well who knows? That might be one of those characters where everybody says, "Hey, with the way our console is designed, that would be a perfect match." My question to you is, if we made this game would you buy it?
IGNcube: Absolutely.
Shigeru Miyamoto: Well, we obviously can't ignore that. Okay, we'll get the Eggplant Wizard coming back.

keep in mind this was said before the reveal of the controller, which I think lends itself to be a great control for flying characters, cant wait!

...exactly what i've been thinking about in terms of the new controller. Now if they can just drop the KID from Kid Icarus (=tiku tiku tiku! Image).

It's a good article. Reaffirms my hopes for the Revolution. Probably won't make a difference to the average casual gamer until Nintendo reveals some definite games with videos and screenshots and begins their actual marketing. If that doesn't come soon, they may give in to the marketing efforts of the now-released Xbox 360 and eventually-released-but-probably-bigger-budget-in-marketing PS3.
Though the article didn't say anything surprising, other than the mention of Kid Icarus. I suppose you could download the NES game onto it, but it didn't sound like what he meant.
However, I also think that Kid Icarus is getting a bit overhyped for something we're not sure is ever going to get another game. I liked StarTropics more and no one ever talks about that.

I think a DS version of Kid Icarus would be great, given the "vertical side-scroller" nature of the NES original. Who knows how it would translate into a 3D game, let alone one with motion control.

That's what people said about 3D Metroid...Don't underestimate Ninty's ability to bring their franchises into the 3D realm...

Well it was considered a major game on the NES.
Bill's right regarding the switchover to 3D. By my count Nintendo's attempts to bring their 2D franchises into 3D have been 100% successful. There are no Sonic Heroes or Mega Man X7 or Contra: Legacy of War on Nintendo's resume.
The new controller I'm obviously much more concerned about but that's a general concern that applies to EVERY Nintendo game.
I would like to see a DS Kid Icarus in 2D with sprites. We never got a SNES Kid Icarus and I'm curious to see what that game would be like with modern 2D graphics.

Yeah, IGN's got a game page set up, with the only link leading to the article that mantidor linked to. IGN seems pretty positive it's going to happen.

So convenient - you only have to type in half the number of letters not including the space...
I don't know about this one, but I guess we'll see more next year.

I read that to mean the same thing as you guys have pointed out-Kid Icarus is en route!

I found this yesterday and thought it was neat: http://www.kennethfejer.dk/pixelart.htm This page of "pixel art" has mock-ups of games, including a version of Kid Icarus for the DS, and also one for the GBA (scroll down for that). (That artist is skilled in both 3D and pixel art and there are other neat things to see on his site, like IsoCity...)
Anyway, even if they could make a Kid Icarus game in 3D, I think they could find ways to make it interesting on the DS.
*pokes Eggplant Wizard in the eye with stylus*
It's cheaper to make DS games and they could test the waters to see if Kid Icarus is wanted enough by the general population. I'm sure most casual gamers have no idea who Kid Icarus is. Or at least if they haven't seen Captain N. I'm a Nintendo fan and I've never finished the Kid Icarus games myself... >_>

I don't get the rage for Kid Icarus. I mean, Nintendo made one Kid Icarus game, right? Supposedly it's really good (I never got into, stopping after about twelve seconds), but still. That's one game, and Nintendo has plenty of other dead franchises or hey, maybe they could make a new one. Still, if it's true and the game turns out to be good, that's great.

Yeah, like bring back the king of multiplayer action from the NES era. Yes, I'm talking about BALLOON FIGHTER.

There's actually two Kid Icarus games, the second subtitled "Of Myths And Monsters" for the original Game Boy. (I should know, I put it up as the December Maps of the Month for my video game maps web site, which I'm not going to mention in case it's considered spam, though I'm sure some of you have an idea what that site is already.)
Like some early Game Boy games were, as far as I can tell, it's simply a portable version of the NES game. The gameplay looks like it is very similar. The final boss is different, sure, but it's mostly the same thing. But maybe I wouldn't know what I'm talking about - I only played a little bit of the original. It was probably a good game at the time.
It's often been called the "sister game" of Metroid...but Samus is everywhere now and where is Pit? Often I wonder that if not for the fact that there were TWO characters from Kid Icarus in Captain N: The Game Master, would Kid Icarus be as cherished as it is?

Maybe a bit overboard (probably a lot) Nintendo should just drop the Kid part and turn Icarus into the Angel of Death in such a way that he's actually a neutral (not aligned to Heaven or Hell) but being on earth for soooooo long (edit some story that Icarus was actually responsable for smithing Lucifer down by actually taking grabs of him and smashing him into the earth but in the proces gets a bit tainted and can't be accepted to enter Heaven again) can test even a Angel's pateince. Edit some Black and White stuff where you can choose your actions as the Angel of Death. Do you just rampant kill all the sinners (even the little boy who stole an apple because he's hungry?) or do you take the time to figure out what is the cause of the misery and elimenate it. Do you wish to serve the God of the Old Testament or the New one? Do you kill sinners at random to attract the attention of Hell, work yourself up trough their ranks so you can actually get close enough to Lucifer to backstab the guy afterwards ... or do you decide to battle the many demons that dwell our world earning your place in Heaven?
You get the idea i'm going after (i haven't really worked it out). Screw the classic NES gameplay, use that rich mythology around angels and demons and everything and make a bad-ass game with you in the middle of great war between Good and Evil.

A game like that would take years to make...
I'm all for it

Nintendo's always been leery about anything religious...note the omission of the "Devil World" trophy in the North American version of SSBM...
I always wondered if Greek mythology crossed their "religion" line. Mythology isn't exactly religion but who knows with Nintendo.
So having some creepy Angel of Death or whatever and references to Heaven and Hell would certainly be a stretch for Nintendo. If they were starting a new franchise, like with Eternal Darkness or Geist, etc., there's a possibility they might, but if it's anything at all related to Kid Icarus, I think that possibility is extremely small.
I remember the rumours of the canned Dead Phoenix game by Capcom as being resurrected as a next-gen (Kid) Icarus game, since the hero was an angel (or at least a guy with wings). Seeing as how Dinosaur Planet became Star Fox Adventures just because the hero looked like a fox (and that too was bumped up a generation), that might still be a possibility, would it not?

[sarcasm]Yeah...because that sounds like the same game we all remember playing years ago.[/sarcasm]
